Is it still possible to get in this? I recently (yesterday) got a great machine that otherwise I currently don't have a use for.

We're no longer accepting applications, and I don't have an updated timeline for when we'll notify those who did apply.

No invites have been sent out yet.  The beta program has not started.

Whenever the beta starts, and you're accepted or not, your participation page will update accordingly (i.e. it won't just disappear, it will tell you if you're accepted or denied).

Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

On Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows he posted a FAQ for Vista SP1.  Here is what he says in one of his comments:

Q: What is Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1)?

A: Previously codenamed Fiji, Windows Vista SP1 is the first major update to Windows Vista, a collection of bug fixes, functional changes, and other additions to Microsoft's latest operating system. As is the case with Vista, however, the feature set for SP1 has changed dramatically over time. Originally, Microsoft hoped to ship a Media Center update with SP1 but my understanding is that this update will no longer be included in SP1.

Q: Any word on when Microsoft will ship the much-need Media Center update?

A: No, when I last spoke with the Media Center team, I was told that Microsoft shipped a Media Center update every year around the holiday season and they would try to keep doing that. At the time, SP1 was expected by late 2007, so the delivery schedule made sense. Right now, it's unclear if the Media Center update will ship out of band by itself to Vista users this year or as part of a set of related updates (like "XP Reloaded" from 2005) later on.

Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

I like how many times the words "guess", "based on my own", "my understanding", and "expected" appear in an FAQ that is said to "no rumors, just the FAQs".  Big Smile [:D]

Bottom line, no one knows what Microsoft is doing with Fiji, Vista SP1, Media Center, etc.  It's all rumors, even my own predictions a page back are.

As much as Paul wants to be the source of factual information, he should learn to not use words like "guess" and "my understanding", because that makes it nothing more than a rumor.

well the excuse that they got too many applicants just sounds more and more like BS the longer they leave it

Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

I think that it may have been a valid reason at the time... but now something different is obviously happening, and either they are not going to do a community beta or more likely the deadline has been moved out by a considerable amount of time, making the process of going to beta at this time a fruitless exercise.

Like I have said a zillion times, things change during the course of a product cycle. But that's okay, since we didn't promise a date or features before, so we don't have anything to go back on!

There will be a beta at some point, and it will contain some cool stuff - including a significant number of things you've asked for. But I can't make promises beyond that.

Don't forget everything, the longer the wait the more features/fixes that is likely to appear and/or the more stable it will be.  Sometimes waiting is good, don't most of us wish Vista would have shipped 6 months from now instead of 7 months ago?  I sure do.

You mean like how they stretched Vista out and dropped a bunch of features?

If the possablity of QAM is in there, please try to make it happen before the fall season starts ! Would love to be able to record my shows in HD this fall !!!! Of course if I made the beta (still crossing my fingers here !!!).  NBC does a lot of shows in HD (1080i), and I've seen Law and Order in HD on my TV, it's really sweet. It would be great to see the though QAM(my only source for HD channels) !!!

oh, and of course the feature to "prefer HD over standard" that was requested !!!
