    RE: DVR 2 WMV Release Candidate 3.5

    I'm desperate for help.  I'm trying to convert files to WMV and I get very bad results.  I'd mentioned this before and it was suggested to change to VBR90 and I've had no luck.  I've switched to NVDVD (had PowerDVD) and no change.  I'm uploading a small test section where I've had the most problem to my FTP server.  I also am uploading that same file converted using the NTSC-VBR profile so you can see what MY results have been.  I've tried every iteration of setting I can find and am throwing myself into the helpful hands of the forum.  Is this normal, should I just shut up and let it go?  Anyway, here is the address, can someone please help me?  I've got 200gb (and growing) that needs to be converted.

    Thanks!  I really appreciate the app and everyones help! The filename is "Debate Camp Test.dvr-ms" and the sample conversion is "85.wmv".  Watch about 10 seconds into it, as they walk along the path in the woods, the leaves on the trees "blink" or focus then unfocus rapidly.

    Address:   ftp://mce2k4.dyndns.org/

    Username:   tgbuser

    password:   mcer0cks (that's a Zero)

    How does one change a profile or command line?

    I am getting error messages trying to convert files.

    THanks.

    RE: DVR 2 WMV Release Candidate 3.5

    Phatboy -- I'm looking in to this.  Thanks for providing both the dvr-ms and WMV files.  I will check them out on my machine and see if it looks any different.  It is likely simply a problem with the WMV file writer, but I don't know for sure.  I'll let you know.

    RE: DVR 2 WMV Release Candidate 3.5

    You can make custom profiles with the Windows Media Profile Editor, which comes with the Windows Media Encoder, which you can get from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmedia.

    RE: DVR 2 WMV Release Candidate 3.5

    Phatboy -- I looked at the files.  There is a part like you mention where the trees in the foreground rapidly go in and out of focus.  If you want carefully in the DVR-MS file, it does the same thing.  It's just exaggerated quite a bit in the WMV file.

    In any case, there's nothing I can think of that you could do to fix this.  Keep in mind that WMV is lossy compression, meaning the quality *will* drop when you convert to WMV.  IMHO, it does a pretty decent job.  The resulting video might have a flaw here and there, but it's DEFINITELY watchable, and doesn't really look that bad.

    RE: DVR 2 WMV Release Candidate 3.5

    ASeigler I appreciate your taking the time to look at that, and I apologize if I sounded unappreciative.  99.8% of all the video looks great and The West Wing doesn't have alot of complicated scenes like that (also Deep Space 9 has much more action and looks great), I just wondered if it was something I was doing wrong or what.  I've gone blind reading every post and link I could find in here on the subject before asking and no one really mentioned compromises with output, so I thought I'd still missed something.  I kind of have a much-manipulated workstation, so I thought that might have been an issue too.  But, as far as compression and ease-of-use goes, this app is hands-down the best and worth the minor quality loss (now I know it's due to the codec, not the app). I just wanted a more experienced set of eyes to look.

    Thanks again and great job!

    Phatboy

    P.S.  Any new news on developments, interesting happenings or the like?

    ************** JIT Debugging **************
    To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
    application or machine (machine.config) must have the
    jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
    The application must also be compiled with debugging
    enabled.

    For example:

    <configuration>
        <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
    </configuration>

    When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
    will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
    rather than being handled by this dialog.

    RE: DVR 2 WMV Release Candidate 3.5

    Ok, I'm starting to see a pattern where I get that Directory not found error on the same files over and over, but some files will work ok and some give this directory error. They're all in the same place and were recorded by the same machine, ect so I don't understand the difference. I also see a problem where sometimes I end up with a zero byte size file that has no extension for example the file normally would be TITLE-SUBTITLE.mpg but instead i get TITLE by itself with no -SUBTITLE.mpg on the end and the file is zero byte and doesn't do anything. When it creates these zero byte files it does run through the entire conversion though so it seems like its trying to do something, just not sure what ? Has anyone else been having problems similar to this ??
