I've been afraid to comment as well but what the heck! I have a similar setup the ones mentioned above with my XPS 420 and I've had no problems to date.

    • XPS 420
    • Vista Ultimate SP1 (also upgraded from Home Premium from Dell to Vista Ultimate)
    • Dual ATI DCT (and HDHR)
    • Nvidia 8800GT
    • 3GB RAM
    • Firmware and driver are both 1.17 (firmware from ATI, updated driver from Windows Update)
    • Windows Live OneCare anti-virus and firewall both turned on
    • Lifextender, vmcNetflix
    • Xbox 360 and Linksys DMA2100 extenders

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

I've pretty much the same setup and I'm not affected (knock on wood).

I'm still on Home Premium, though. Factory image, but uninstalled pretty much all the Dell crap that was installed and some other stuff like Google Desktop Search. I also uninstalled the Intel Viiv stuff. I have the Nvidia 8800GT, Dual DCT plus HDHomeRun and no anti-virus. The only plug-ins are my In2 network home automation and Lifextender so far. Using 2 Linksys 2100 conntected to Pioneer plasmas over Gigabit Ethernet.

I've actually done a series of upgrades over the past two weeks. I'm now on the latest BIOS (A04), I have upgraded the NIC drivers a while back and installed the latests Nvidia drivers that were released a couple of weeks ago. And of course I upgraded the ATI firmware. I also installed all the critical and important windows updates. I didnt' install the ATI driver upgrade. That one is flagged as optional in my list and a rarely ever install optional stuff unless it addresses a specific issue I'm having.

It seems everyone with the problem has more than one tuner. I don't experience it, but I only have one and never upgraded the firmware.

I only have one tuner and am experiencing the problem ...

I have a Dell XPS 420 purchased in early January.  I had Home Premium on it and upgraded to Ultimate.  I only have one tuner.  I am experiencing the same problems as everyone else.

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

I had the problem this morning. Came back home at lunch to call Dell. Like I said earilier, they also believe its a MS problem.

Either way, they suggested I turn everything off and unplug for 10 min. I did that and everything worked when I booted back up. So I left it on all afternoon. Its been going for about 6 hours now without issues. knock on wood.

But, who knows what will happen in the next 6?

Came home to upload my log and the last time that file was written to was April 28th long before this problem occurred.  Oh well...

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

I have Dell XPS 420, 2 ATI DCT's, Vista SP1, using Insight Digital Cable in Cincinnati. Have been working fine for 6 weeks. Now I cannot watch any TV with the CableCards installed, if I remove I can watch SD. I have updated to the A04 BIOS today and completely reset and reinstalled the DCTs as suggested here but cannot get past the 'Restricted Content' on any channel when the CableCards are installed. I have called Insight and had them reinit the cards, but no improvement.

    5/19 Update:

Came home from work today.  It is now 7:00PM CDT and my HDTV tuner is still working ... since 6:00PM CDT yesterday.  I left the TV on all night and it stayed on just fine.  I did turn it off before going to work.

Just waiting for it to fail ...

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

I tried Mogulbasher's suggestion of restarting the Windows Media Center Receiver Service, and it worked!  Thanks!

Now I should be able to schedule a start and stop of that service every night just after the problem happens, and hopefully that will work around the problem for now.  Of course, if I want to record something at the 7:30 pm point where the problem happens, I'm in trouble.

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

Quick question, has anyone here installed SP1 via windows update and not via the stand alone download?  I downloaded it and installed prior to it being officially available via windows update (though it was the final version) and I wonder if that might be the cause?  Has anyone tried to reinstall SP1?

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

How's this for a long shot.  I went through the 7 pages of this thread so far and checked out all the people who have NOT experienced the problem to date.  The following people have indicated that they have not seen the problem as of yet:

    • bjdraw
    • jhale83
    • superswiss
    • montyward
    • pluckyhd
    • boxerboys (me)

In addition to not experiencing the problem, we all also have an HD Homerun setup.  Now this could be a strange coincidence, but I am wondering if there is anyone who has experienced the problem and also has an HD Homerun setup in addition to the DCTs.
