RE: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

For those of you who may be having difficulty or would like to use graphedit to strip the dvr-ms wrapper ther are some easy directions at:

    http://nolanparty.com/mediaportal.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1428&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

It seems like its difficult, but really very simple and will work with any configuration.  Also, on that forum is a plug-in for Media Portal that does a similar 'trick'.

Also... looking for a way to use graphedit to get around the DRM issue of TV shows recorded on HBO,Encore, Starz etc... If anyone has any ideas the entire MCE community will sing your praises! Hopefully someone knowledgable will take on the challenge!

RE: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

Very well done. This is an excellent app.

I have just tried it out on my laptop running a clean winxp pro+sp2, not on my wmce m/c.

    Bat file worked fine
Nice interface and nice system tray applet telling me what was going on, although personally I think i would prefer to see this duplicated (or just) on main screen (add switch?).

Used a five min tv prog, converted flawlessly.

Clicked on mpg which started up wmp10.

    Got:

    sending request for codec
    error downloading codec

but it still played. I think someone else mentioned this as well previously.

The fact that it can be used standalone is a very good idea.

You're worth a donation. [Where's your payPal donate button?]

I think you now need to think of a jazzy name for it as well...

btw could anyone direct me to a site with a howto/faq on the background and theory to all this stuff as it's beyond me, but I now think I want to know about it.

yep.. to make disappear that "error" you have to, from within WMP 10, menu > Tools > Options > uncheck the automatic codec download from internet

Works. Sorry, I assume the answer is in the thread and I must have missed it.

RE: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

    Heimiko:

I seem to be having a different issue with the program...

Launch the app: no problems.  Choose to convert an individual file; select an hour-long TV episode.

After about a minute, I notice that the progress bar hasn't moved too much and Windows has gotten painfully sluggish.  Bring up Task Manager and find that the DVR-MS-to-MPG utility is eating 97% of my CPU.

Well, it's a test, after all, so I decide to cancel the operation and DVR-MS reports "Done!".  I would have thought it would report "operation unexpectedly terminated" or something similar, but OK.  I figure I'll check out the resulting partial MPEG file so that when I report the heavy CPU usage here, I can at least know whether or not to also report the "sound/no sound" issue.

Here's the kicker: the "partial" file turns out to be a COMPLETE, PERFECT 2GB MPEG file -- the entire episode.

    So here's my question(s):

    1) If I interrupted the program, what was it doing with all those CPU cycles?

    2) If the program was hung in some kind of a loop, can we fix this?

    3) Is such heavy CPU usage normal for the program?

Basic PC specs: AMD Sempron 2.0GHz CPU/512MB RAM.

Hope we can sort this out, it would be a sad showstopper for what is clearly a BRILLIANT piece of programming!

RE: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

    Has anyone looked at

    http://www.sage-community.org/index.cgi/wiki/ComSkip

This is covered under the GPL and could be integrated into the above 'DVR-MS to MPG' utility to get rid of commercials.

All that is needed is to analyse text file from ComSkip and then automate VirtualDUB-MPEG to remove the tagged sections.

RE: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

Sorry ppl, I haven't had much time lately to awnser any messages. Hope you'll all enjoy the program, and I see you help eachother out, which is cool (saves me from awsering a lot)

    @sds910:

The progressbar isn't matured yet, and gives faulty readings. Sometimes it doesn't even move (in your case). I'll figure this out later and fix it. the full processing power that it took, is only because you probably had no other active heavy processes running, and when you don't it will take full advantage of the speed you have available. The process in which it is running, is set on LOW. So it will allow other threads (other programs and such) to be running smoothly, because AutoDVRconvert is to be a background process. So yes, occasionally it might be normal for it to take 95% power The program wasn't hung in a loop, it probably just finished off when you descided to press cancel, in which case the conversion succeeds.
How much time was there between you pressing the cancel button, and the "Done!" message appearing?

RE: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

    Heimiko:

I've had some time now to test the app on my main workstation PC and can confirm your suggestion that my issue was simply my interpretation of faulty output from the progress meter.  If it's truly set to LOW processing, then... well... man-oh-manischewitz, my hat is off to you.  You have done an excellent job here...

Not certain yet about using the program to auto-convert on my MCE box, but on my workstation, this has definitely replaced that bloated mess, PowerDirector 4, which I was only using to convert DVR-MS in the first place.

RE: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

I'm just wondering what codec is wmp10 actually looking for in trying to play these mpg files? (re my previous post) I was hoping to try and stream the video file to my pocketpc using media encoder, but this app doesn't come up with any video device enabled. So after some research I think I need a codec, but after trying a few (ffdshow?!, allin1 a file with a few codecs in it) I'm no further forward.

The article describing streaming was :

    http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20040712_streaming_music_to_your_pocket_pc_using_windows_media_encoder.html

It works great for audio. But I'm lost for video (though starting to understand

@Heimiko, still no paypal donate mate. We don't want this app to die for lack of support?

RE: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

    @Gordon Moore:

The output of the app is in MPEG 2 format, which is totaly unsupported on the PPC platform, and there's not any 3rd party app that can play it either. not even betaplayer will pull the job. But it is possible to make other filters for other output formats (WMV for example) which are playable on your device. Later, i'll post a filter which should do that job (no change on the actual program needed).

the support issue... well, as you suggested, I will open up paypal donation soon, for everyone interested enough to keep development and support going. thanks!

    Hi,

As Heimiko says, a Pocket PC does not support MPEG2, but it will play wmv. Here's the Graph I succesfully used to make my recordings PPC ready:

Thanks Danee. I placed a copy of this graph in the download section of this program. (Hope you don't mind).

    Thanks for the explanation.

How do I use this xml file. Or is this already explained earlier in the thread?
