    Re: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

    Is there a tutorial on graphedit available somewhere?
    Also i would like to know which drivers are the best ones for an Hauppauge WinTV PVR 500.
    I have installed the latest ones from hauppauge.tv but i am not sure these are the bests there are. My image quality is not what i would like it to be. Also i have read several times that not all driver versions work with the Hauppauge tweak tool.
    Can someone tell me what drivers give the best result, work with hauppauge tweak tool and where i am still able to find them.

    Thx

    Re: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

    I have a Hauppauge PVR-250 and a Hauppauge PVR-350.
    What I am looking for is a way to force Mediacenter to always record at 12 Mbps constant bitrate in Vista MCE.
    I know that that way lots of recorded show will then be too big to put on a single DVD, but I hardly ever write them to disc.
    Any way of forcing this ?
    Is that possible with Graphedit or something ?

    Are you referring to this fix?  I just bought a new HP 8120n yesterday and am excited about it's features, but Live TV is a little disappointing at the moment.  Thanks in advance!

    erdaka:
    I've been messing around with MCE and iv managed to get digital quality for Live TV and Recordings. Now because not everyone has the same system specs, these settings may not work for everyone. I'm currently using a Hauppauge WinTV PVR-150MCE and i highly recommend this capture card. I've used an all-in-wonder card in the past which uses software encoding and it doesn't even come close to the video quality of a hardware encoding capture card.

    First off, before you make any changes to your system, do yourself a favor and make a backup. I use Acronis True Image, and it has never let me down. Using windows System Restore just doesn't cut it.

    If you aren't using InterVideo as your DVD Decoder, go get it now. It comes with WinDVD and i highly recommend you get the Platinum version. Then make sure you’re using it as you default video decoder using Microsoft’s "Video Decoder Checkup Utility". Also another tip, if your updating your video decoder i recommend you uninstall any previous versions and run a registry cleaner before installing the latest version.

    With regards to motion blurring and choppiness. To fix this problem i enabled DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA) and Hardware Motion Compensation (HWMC) through the registry. These settings seem to be apart of the video decoder, and i've read that not all video cards support these settings.

    Here are my registry settings:
    note* you'll have to restart your computer before any registry changes take effect.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\InterVideo\Common\VideoDec]
    "DsContinuousRate"=dword:00000001
    "DXVA"=dword:00000001
    "HWMC"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\InterVideo\Common\VideoDec]
    "DsContinuousRate"=dword:00000001
    "DXVA"=dword:00000001
    "HWMC"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\InterVideo\MCE\VideoDec]
    "DsContinuousRate"=dword:00000001
    "Dxva"=dword:00000001

    Try these settings, they should make a difference. Aslo make sure "DsContinuousRate" is set to 1 or the video will stick when ff and rw'ing. The settings above seem to work just fine.

    Here's my EncodingQuality settings:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\Recording]
    "EncodingQuality"  3000000, 4500000, 6000000, 8500000

    Here are some other Hauppauge WinTV settings that make a nice difference. The first thing you want to do is add the below "HcwSaveEncoderSettings" to your registry. This will allow the below settings to save after you restart your computer. After you add this to your registry restart your computer before making any further changes.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hcwPP2\DriverData]
    "HcwSaveEncoderSettings"=dword:00000001

    Now that your settings will save you can use GraphEdit to make some changes. Using GraphEdit, go to: Graph > Insert Filters > Multiplexer Devices > Hauppauge WinTV PVR PCI II Encoder and Insert Filter. Then right click on the filter and select properties. Under the "Hauppauge ECP Video" tab change the Bitrate Average to "6000", the Peak to "12000" and P Spacing to "1". Then under the "Dynamic Noise Reduction" tab i changed the "Temporal Static Level" to 0. Try changing this to something between 0 and 3, so see what looks best for your system.

    You can also adjust the sharpness of you Hauppauge WinTV card, although i find the default setting is fine. With the current drivers the default settings is 4.

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hcwPP2\DriverData]
    "HcwSharpness"= "4"  note* the default setting may be different.

    Okay one more setting, search through your registry for "DefAvgBitRate". Increasing the Decimal value for this registry setting seems to make a big difference in picture quality. The default settings is something like "20000000", try settings this value to "85000000" or even higher. I've actually set this value to as high as "850000000" count the zeros, and the picture quality got significantly better. I suggest trying to find the highest value your computer will handle without any problems.

    I hope this helps some of you out there.  I can now watch Live TV and Recordings on a 57" HDTV without any noticeable loss of quality. Here's a screenshot.

    Re: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

    Omg!! Thankyou so much.  i have been so frustrated with tv quality in media center i thought my card must be junk. i stopped using the tv feature and only used media center for the mymovies plugin. but that left me stuck with the terrible guide from my stb. cant omit channels, they spam you with ads on it too.

    i was just sick with my media experience, but now standard def over coax in mce is juast as good as running it directly to the tv.  ive been playing with capturing over svideo from my highdef box and it really looks like dvd quality.  i cant wait for my blaster to get here so i can hook up my media center with svideo and say good bye to those ads forever. even if from now on hd means dvd quality.

    i wonder why ms wouldnt bother to address something like this with a hot fix or something?

    Update: ooooo i found the firestb to change my channles. im in the mix now and its really nice. love this site. i cant figure how it took me 2 yrs to find and use this place.

    I just found this thread and I am Salivating!!Big Smile [:D]

    My live TV and Recorded TV are so bad they are unwatchable....(I have a new HP Vista with WinTV-HVR-1800)

    I have looked at my registry, however, the bitrate tweak said "Restricted"...Lot's of other registry entries did not completely match....(I am very paraniod that I may really screw something up and don't want to experiment!!)

    Could someone PLEASE update this thread with tweaks to the latest versions of Vista and WinTV cards?

    Thanks in Advance!!

     I have added this to the registry but it won't save the settings.

     I have also noticed after using Graphedit that there are two filters.

    I created one using the instructions above but can't get the settings to save.

    I also found one through the advanced tab on the Hauppauge tweaker tool but I can't get the settings to save on that either.

    I try the tweak mentioned in the first post (Vista) and I don't see any difference. Does anyone achieve some improvement on Vista?

    Thanks

    Re: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

    After months of working on this with HP and Microsoft, it

    turns out that the only reolution that is possible for outpout to a

    PC monitor is 800 by 600 ...  Period.  It resizes everything

    else and that is why it looks so crappy in largeer formats

    (1650 x xxxx) for instance ...

    The same constraints as blowing up pictures to twice as big

    causing "Jaggies" happen to be inherrent in MCE and the hardware.

    I have 64 bit core 2 dual processor with GT8800 card and I can't even

    GET a video solution from HP ... The configurator won't allow it as a supported

    config.  The computer is a D4995T that the replace my older M8150 with after they

    couldn't resolve the resolution and BSoD even after freshly reloading the system

    from the facxtory load.

    So that seems to be the end of that ... Also, if you monitor doesn't support HDCP

    or some such thingie, you can't play HD dvd either ...  Maybe is a few years the video

    people will catch up to the computer screen people. .... ????

    I am disgusted ...
