Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

LTRipley said he did a fresh install of Vista so I would think that deleting the files in the DRM folder is just a temp fix.

I received the Restricted Content message this morning again. happened between 1:00am and 5:00am. I powered off each DCT and removed the cablecard, then powered them back on and ran the TV signal setup. After that finished I powered them back off and reinstalled the card and then powered them back on and ran the TV signal setup. It was working when I left for work this morning. We will see how long it lasts but so far it has never been longer than 24 hours or overnight.

    UPDATE:

    ARobinso0502:
I have decided to take the plung.  I was not afraid of this fix in that I have already done a fresh install.  I disabled anything to have to do with media.  I then backup the DRM folder and deleted the content leaving the directory structure in tack.  After the reboot, I put in the cable cards and allowed it to find the cable cards.  I did not run the Activate Card wizard but HD is working.

I left out the house and by time I returned at 4:00 AM the error message returned.  I have since applied the fix again but this time I went through the Activate Card wizard.  No issues as yet.

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

Same problem here, and I only just found this post.  My system crapped out on May 15.  Up until then everything had been working great with SP1 and 1.17 already installed.  Dell XPS 420.

Since then I keep getting the Restricted Content Message.  I can get mine to work by stopping the Media Center Receiver service in services and restarting it.  after doing that the signal comes back.  I post this cos this is an easy way for everyone to at least get it running for another 12 hours.  Obviously the WAF has gone down to zero at this point.

I have tried many of the same things.  Did a system restore to May 14 et al.  None of it works.

I use comcast.  I am convinced that this is not a cable company issue.  Otherwise I would not be able to fix the problem by stopping and starting a serivce in Windows.  This has to be a MS issue.  They have done something to cause the receiver service to lose connectivity with the tuners or something each time the system goes out to do some sort of DRM check.

since the 1.17 worked fine with SP1 for a while I do not buy that this is a firmware issue on ATI end either.

You would think that MS could at least test stuff enough so that they dont mess up everyones systems.  Just imagine how many people are out there who are getting frustrated with this whole exercise and are now going through multiple call outs of their service providers to get them to fix the machines.

And you want to know why the cable companies hate cablecards in pcs.  I wonder how much they are spending trying to fix this problem which may not even be their problem

A frustrated user of Windows Media Center!

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

I'm with most of you guys.

I've had the XPS 420 for a couple of weeks. Finally got the cablecard from Comcast and for 3 days.....no problems.

Then yesterday morning this happened and I figured it was Comcast messing up. Now I've called Dell and they said its a Microsoft problem that's happening to a lot of people.

My question is.....is there another media center-like tool that can be used with the ATI TV Wonder tuner? Or is this going to be a quick/slow fix by MS?

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

I found this over in the dell forums

    http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=Tech_Talk_XPS&thread.id=27536&view=by_date_ascending&page=25

It seems we have caught the attention of some folks over at Microsoft.  Currently they are trying to find a pattern among the affected machines.

Next time your machine gives the Restricted Content message, please copy this log file and email it to me at chapmanj AT asu DOT edu.

    C:\windows\serviceprofiles\networkservice\appdata\local\temp\ehmsdri.log

Paste the contents in the email instead of sending the file directly, I wont be able to receive a .log extension.

I will forward all the log files over to MS and let you know what I hear back.

    Thanks,

    John Chapman

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

My error popped up again morning following a successful recording at 11 AM after on WFLA. On HDNET at 1pm, Star Trek Enteprise failed to record with the "Restricted Content" error in the history log. This means that during the 12pm to 1pm timeslot, something occured while the system was not recording to make it fail when the system began to record. Only one tuner failed at this point and upon rebooting I was able to again record on both tuners on both HD and SD stations. I did NOT power cycle the DCTs or the computer, I simply rebooted the system and everything was back to normal. Its as if the workaround is getting easier to deal with and for me less frequent but nonetheless still occuring every 12 hours or so.

Taking a look at the log file mentioned above, I had a failed recording at 1pm EST for Star Trek: Enterprise on HDNET. Here are the only references to that same time period in which the failure occurred:

To me, essentially these seem state the same messages for both the failed recording at 1pm and the completed recording that started at 11am and went to 12pm. The only difference is on the failed recording the OCUR classdriver: CDkScanningTuner::get_SignalStrength line appears a single time, where as on all recordings that succeed it continues throughout the entire recording.

    That's crazy.

Anybody have any idea how long it would take a Microsoft to fix something like this?

It seems everyone with the problem has more than one tuner. I don't experience it, but I only have one and never upgraded the firmware.

    Ben
How good can it be, if it isn't HD?

perhaps you're on to something! However, i experienced the problem prior to upgrading firmware and it continued after the upgrade...

BTW: completely unrelated, thanks for all the work you do on EngadgetHD, love it.

I'm still trying to figure out what happened between the time I turned everything off on Saturday night, and back on Sunday Morning.

I've either turned it on to the Restricted message, after it popping up for alittle bit. It goes away until the next day.

I've been afraid to chime in too much as I guess I am one of the lucky ones.  If it helps, here is my config which has not been affected to date (knock on wood).

    • XPS 420
    • Vista Ultimate SP1 (original Dell build and upgraded to Ultimate)
    • Dual ATI DCT (and HDHR)
    • Graphics Card - ATI HD 2600 XT
    • 3GB RAM
    • Firmware: 1.17 (from ATI); driver 6.0.6000.16386 with a date of 6/21/2006 (original install versions);  Windows Update was set to autoinstall nightly but this update did not appear (since turned off)
    • Microsoft Forefront Client Security for A/V and malware protection; always on
    • Windows Firewall always on
    • Addons: LifeExtender, MyMovies, and mceWeather

I'd be glad to share anything else if helps to break down those that affected and those that are not.

Re: ALERT: *Micorosoft Windows Update* ATI - Streaming Media Broadcast Devices - ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turner

I have a very similar set up to you and have been totally affected.

    Del XPS 420
    Dual ATI Digital Cards
No Firwall or AV due to problems getting the tuners to work with either of them
    SP1
    4GB Ram
    1.7 Firmware.

The SP1 and the 1.7 were put on before May 14th

The other thing we should check for consistency on is perhaps the graphics card.  Nvidia 8800
