    mmillmor:
ITV catchup is on my to-to list, but it's not trivial.

Not trivial, but done at last. Version 1.4 is available to download now, and it includes ITV programs too. It doesn't quite support all that Channel 4 does yet - i.e. no date access, but it seems to work well. Let me know if you have any feedback.

Re: BBC iPlayer addin for vista MCE

Tested the new version (1.4) with ITV and working just great.
Time to throw my old analogue TV card in the bin :) finally

Maybe it would be a good idea to rename the project from iPlayer MCE since you've got all of the main terrestrial channels in one plugin (The BBC might get a bit tetchy about the name)

I can't believe that this project has come so far so quickly.....simply genius!

I had been thinking exactly the same thing myself, but had struggled to come up with a name. It shows UK TV channels, so I thought of UKTV Player, but clearly the UKTV guys would not like that. Brit Player is naff. VOD MCE is a bit acronym heavy, but is my favorite at the moment. So, I'm opening it up for any suggestions please.

I bet you still get a better quality picture out of your old analogue card, even if it's not so convenient!

Re: BBC iPlayer addin for vista MCE

Maybe you should open a poll on your website for the best new name (just a suggestion)

As for my TV card, it's not the card that is naff, it's the area I live in......I can't even receive Channel 5 never mind Freeview Sad [:(] and the quality from the internet is better!  Yes......I live way out in the wilderness of England!  But it's nice living up here otherwise Big Smile [:D]

    P.S.
When I have funds in my PayPal account......I'll definitely be donating!!!!

Re: BBC iPlayer addin for vista MCE

Channel 5 don't have a watch again service either, so nothing I can do to help you there I'm afraid.

I decided to change the name to TunerFree MCE instead of iPlayer MCE, since it is a way of watching TV without a tuner. That name applies from version 1.4.1 onwards.

In 1.4.1, I also added channel logos, added ITV to the date picker results, and added both Channel 4 and ITV to the search results. I also split out the ITV and Channel 4 programs on the picker.

Re: BBC iPlayer addin for vista MCE

Hello again, I have a few bits of feedback from me and various friends/family that may or may not be useful. (though its possible more donations may be on their way :o) )

    • The 'Home' Screen is still set to BBC files.... I beleive the homescreen should remain blank... This allows the menu to load quicker, whereas at the minute, all the thumbnails have to load first.
    • Would it be possible to choose the channel, time or cat first....before it loads up anything, or have a browse option which shows everything? (Just to help the overall speed).
    • The way the top menu selection works - it is quite hard sometimes to read the menu options due to the overlay onto the thumbnails - could there be a coloured background of the menu to make navigation easier?
    • Is there a way to make the thumbnails smaller (like the list view in Recorded TV) - or a way of just having titles and no picture? (again, improving the speed?). Or a way of showing just the titles, and a intermediate screen (like Vista MC) with the program details/pic and "play now"?
    • I noticed a few times the program stopped responding once or twice, i beleive this is due to it caching all of the files (the suspect machine was running on wireless, which may have been causing it to slow down).

These are just things that have been mentioned...I am definitely happy with the program! its very good! and certainly ever present congrats. just a few ideas that could maybe help improve if/when you have time !

    Gaz,

thanks for the feedback - it really is appreciated.

With the "Home" page - it's not loading the home page that takes time - that takes a fraction of a second, and the images come in the background. The reason it takes so long is that it is caching the ITV and C4 content at the same time. If I didn't display the Home page items, there would just be a blank screen for 20 seconds, which may make people think it has crashed.

I did want to add ITV and C4 content to the home page, but they didn't have any similar concept to the BBC of programs they particularly wanted to highlight, so there was nothing I could add.

I guess I could not cache anything up front at all and only download the content when you come to use it, but it makes it much slower when it comes to change channels to ITV or C4, which wasn't particularly good. I'll think that one over though.

The menu background opacity could certainly be decreased.

With a list view instead of a thumbnail view, I did wonder about having a list of programs, then drill down to a list of episodes. That would run faster, but I am not sure if it would look as nice. I'll think that over too. I wish there was a way to use the right-click menu to add switches like this - anyone know of a way?

As for stopping responding, there is a lot of network traffic, and although I try to do it all in background threads, perhaps there are some parts which are blocking. I'll take a look.

    Thanks

    Martin

I am purely thinking of useability now.

the menus along the top can be a little awkward sometimes, but generally quite happy!

Re: BBC iPlayer addin for vista MCE

I must agree that the menu's are a bit fiddly.
Perhaps a more Media Center natural feel to them would be better.

Re: BBC iPlayer addin for vista MCE

It would be great if you could be more specific - what is the behaviour that you don't like (e.g. perhaps the way it expands to show the menu items is annoying?). If I can get some more details, I have a better chance of being able to do something about it.

    Thanks

I'd like the menu's to be more like this:

    Just my personal preference.

Re: BBC iPlayer addin for vista MCE

Also, the text is too small next to each programme thumbnail.  Sitting across the room from a 1080p screen, it's really hard to see!

Could the text be bigger, and perhaps go underneath the thumbnail?  There's a lot of wasted space currently - if the title went underneath each picture you would be able to squeeze twice as many thumbnails on in the horizontal direction.

Also, it would be good to have a list view rather than showing thumbnails - this would make browsing faster and you would see more shows on the screen at once, making navigation easier.

Otherwise, very good work, I look forward to seeing how this project turns out!

I agree a list view would be nice I have ANOTHER suggestion which I would personally prefer - see this screen shot as a NEW example:

    (Sorry for the crappy mockups)

    mmillmor,

I have some ideas about how you can change the plugin for the better, not to do with the looks but the way you actually get the data (specifically the bbc videos). I'd rather not spend ages posting all the ideas here, so if you have msn add me: ruudbarron@hotmail.com

I was going to create a whole new plugin but seen as you already have a good base it might be worth just updating yours.
