Just curious, what's your setup look like?  What video card are you using?  I'm using a 6600, maybe mine's just no beefy enough for the job.

    Look at my signature.

That was a dumb question -  sorry.

hmmm...  I'm running almost the same setup but you've got a much better video card.

I think it's time for a trip to newegg....

Yes that was the same problem I was having, same error message.

OK, try this, have you ever tried the drivers from ATI's website?

Go to Device manager, uninstall the Graphics card, and reboot.  let the drivers reinstall and try again.

I tried using the RC1 drivers but once I went back to the RC2 drivers same problem so I had to completely remove the drivers.

If you have System restore turned on you could go as far back as you can to the point where you know the drivers from the current installed Vista OS are in place.

Did that, still getting a codec error,
I am using the RC2 ATI drivers, I have the koepi xvix/divx installed, and powerdvd, still no luck. This is getting very frustrating. Everyone's divx can work except mine?
Any other suggestions? Or have I basically done everything?

mfpreach - have you tried using the ffdshow tryout yet? Available here - http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow-tryout/ffdshow-tryouts-rev127.exe?download

as appose to the standard version. I currently have NO codec packs installed, am using the ATI RC1 drivers, and the included Vista MPEG2 decoder. I would seggest you uninstall any codecs, uninstall any other MPEG2 decoders and just try the ffdshow-tryout as above.

    Good luck!

Re: Wicked Stutter in Vista MCE Build 5728

I'm experiencing the same stuttering problem in RC2 using the included drivers for my Nvidia card (I did not install the 96.33 though).  Interestingly, stutter only occurs during playback and never while watching live tv, and only when playing back using media center.  When I play the same file that stuttered in media center with Media player, it's fine.  I’ve tried both the latest Purevideo decoder and the default ms codecs with the same results and still cannot seem to resolve….it's also inconsistent, as not all recording stutter all the time.

Yeah I've been trying to shake this stuttering issue for weeks, I only getting using the default decoder that came with RC2.

I've installed the windvd 7 decoder and it works great, with the best picture on Live TV that I've seen in my years using MCE.   But my major problem is the Restricted Content on certain Premium channels such as all HBO channels, AMC channel.

Anyone come up with a way to resolve this Restricted Content issue?

Re: Wicked Stutter in Vista MCE Build 5728

Bumping this thread because I got the stuttering to stop the other day.  I had previously turned off Windows Desktop Search and Windows Defender as has been suggested.  There was still some stutter when watching live TV.  Then at some point my wife pointed out an error stating something like "Windows Vista is running really slowly, would you like to turn off Aero Glass?"  I turned it off and the stuttering is gone.  For a machine that sits in my living room and is primarily used for Media Center, I don't care about Aero.

Truthfully, I thought about turning off Aero before by turning off features (transparency, etc.) in the Control Panel for Performance, but couldn't figure out how to turn off that theme within the UI.  Only turning it off at Vista's suggestion fixed the stuttering.  I hope this helps.  FYI, my system rated a 2.3 for graphics with its X300 (by far the lowest score) so if you have a low graphics rating, try to live without Aero rather than put up with jerky live TV.

Re: Wicked Stutter in Vista MCE Build 5728

Bingo!  I have been trying for weeks to sort out the Live TV stutter with my Vista MCE setup.  I never had a problem with XP and I am using the same hardware so I knew it wasn't the graphics card or disks or codecs.

TURNED OFF AEROGLASS AND ALL IS PERFECT! :-)

I suspect that a more powerful Graphics card would have the same effect but turning off Aeroglass is cheaper and unless you spend a lot of time outside the Media Centre layer and want to impress people with your desktop then you don't need it anyway.

Re: Wicked Stutter in Vista MCE Build 5728

I too have been having this problem but turning off Aero did not solve this problem. BTW,  right now I'm using S-Video as I have not quite found the LCD I'm going to buy for this set-up so blaming the HDMI is definately ruled out.
