I would think you would have problems with the DVI connection and that X300. I don't know how the component adapter will change things. You will have to experiment with it i guess.

Bootrix, why don't you just replace that card with an Nvidia instead of letting the machine sit idle?

DVI -> component will fix this issue. With that adapter plugged in, when the computer boots, the card sees the adapter and switches to an analog mode. This analog mode can't tell if the TV is on or off, so it outputs all the time. The only reason DVI can even have this issue is that DVI is bi-directional, so it's possible for the video card to know when the TV is on or off.

RE: DVi -> HDMI cable wont wake screen

Mammoth, Oh yes..you bet I am now!   Now that I know that it was just that darn card (ATI x700).  You see, all this has just come about within the last 3 days, that is...me getting the new machine with the Nvidia 6600 and finding this thread, so now that I have put all the info together, I am slapping a 6600 in that other machine and possibly taking the new machine back.  My older machine ran great, with the exception of switching inputs and getting a black screen when coming back to the MCE box (with ATI card), so I am definitely going to find a use for the other box, or possibly even take the new box back as I have a 30-day return policy on it.

The new box is pretty sweet, it is the HP z555 Media Center box, with LCD screen, etc... BUT when I pause live video on it and return, the video is super choppy...AND the box gets SUPER HOT, so I truly may be returning it and sticking with my old box!  It has a 3.0 Ghz processor, 1 Gig Ram, Nvidia 6600, Hauppauge MCE500 PVR (dual tuners), HDTV Wonder, 2.4 Ghz wireless, etc., and with all that, the video playback on paused Live TV is pretty bad at the moment (it stops, skips, pauses intermittently) so I am definitely not going to keep it if I don't find a fix soon! (the old box never had those problems)

RE: DVi -> HDMI cable wont wake screen

I can confirm that the component adaptor doesn't have this problem, as I just switched from HDMI to component on a Radeon 9800 Pro, and the problem went away.

Of course, the new problem is that now it won't play DVDs in 1080i with the component adapter.

I've pretty much had it with ATI for awhile. Is there an AGP version of the NVidea 6600 that does component out and plays nicely with everything else? A fanless model would be even better. Gaming issues are not a concern on this box.

    Thanks!

Yeah I'm probably going Nvidia too its too bad the low cost X300 is fine for this box (don't game on it)

I've read problems with the 6200 so I guess I'll be going with the 6600 any thing I should look out for or is this pretty much guaranteed to work?

RE: DVi -> HDMI cable wont wake screen

Well, it's only been a few days for me, but my 6600 AGP card has been great. it came with a component output (which I haven't tried) and has been reliable and quiet. The only bug I've discovered so far is a very, very minor issue having to do with switching back and forth between 720p and 1080p (but why would anyone but me want to do that? Anyway, seems to be a good card -- not fanless, but it is quiet -- definitely quieter than my 9800 by a bit. Don't really have a lot of experience selling Nvidia platforms yet, so I wish I could be more help. Ask any other questions if you want.

Hey mammoth - should we submit a new ticket even though searching now pulls this up as a known issue?  Should we ref the existing issues?  (Bug ID 737-20848).

    Thanks.

RE: DVi -> HDMI cable wont wake screen

I would still call them if you plan on keeping the card. It can't hurt and it might help speed things along. I did a search in the knowledgebase and couldn't bring anything up. even tried your ticket number you posted, but no luck. you sure that is the right number? anyway, make a new ticket or just wait, i guess.

RE: DVi -> HDMI cable wont wake screen

Yup, I'm sure it's correct - just double-checked this AM - 737-20848.  To find it, I just did a serach on one term - "HDMI".  It was the only results that came up.

I submitted a new ticket, though.  737-927447  Go ahead and add that to your list, mammoth.  :-)

RE: DVi -> HDMI cable wont wake screen

Pretty darn sad that this problem is STILL NOT corrected!  I will never own an ATI card again unless ATI is handing them out FREE at my local grocery store for X-mas tree ornaments!   It took ATI forever just to recognize how they screwed the drivers up, and now this long to even fix it?!  Sad state of affairs!

So much for being HDMI compliant LOL!

RE: DVi -> HDMI cable wont wake screen

Just to clarify (er, be picky), you meant DVI compliant.  :-)  No video card is fully HDMI compliant as that means the card would have to support copy protection (HDCP).  Both ATI & Nvidia just made announcements about that, but I'll make a guess that it'll need new hardware, not just new drivers.  And I'm also willing to bet that you'll need one of these new cards for Microsoft's upcoming Cable Card support.

But your point is very valid.  I'm kinda annoyed - I'm just lucky that I have a very easy work-around using VGA.

    Time will tell...

any news on this ?.  I have a case open with ATI.

I referenced the master case number in mine.  Haven't heard anything .. anyone else ?

RE: DVi -> HDMI cable wont wake screen

Just an FYI, for me, 5.13 (12/21/05) doesn't fix it.

    Keep complaining.
