RE: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

Quite complicated, I promised to keep the MCE machine as virgin as possible... Seems it won't be possible at all. Nevertheless, I have a FujitsuSiemens Scaleo E brand new thing and a Sony Bravia LCD TV and I am really depressed how different is the Live TV from Scaleo compared to the real TV broadcast on TV, both use the same coaxial cable, terrestrial analogue. I connect via VGA cable, Bravia doesn't have a DVI input, only HDMI, reduction DVI-HDMI didn't work. The VGA cable shouldn't be the problem since DVD plays great, better than my previous standalone player.

This topic is not about recorded/anyhow compressed TV, this is about why the bloody machine destroys what it gets.

I put it here to encourage you to test and post updates, I see that the solution differs from user to user. Good luck

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!

I just built my MCE PC and was ready to sell it.... I have had a HDTV for over a year and got spoiled I guess.

    This reg fix works GREAT!

It still needs more improvement, but it will work for now.

Re: RE: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

Thanks for the above from erdaka 9-15-2005. Just joined.  Have had rubbish live TV quality for several months. Just running the DVD decoder check utility to confirm was using Intervideo WinDVD as default was handy, then tried upgrading the OEM Win DVD5 version, that came with the computer, to version 7 -platinum has eliminated nearly all pixelation, blur and banding problems. Guess computer vendors are trying to save a few bucks. Well worth the money! I now have almost cable quality picture again on my 42" plasma screen. Also found the latest NVIDIA drivers made big difference. Havent tried the Hauppage tweak tool or changing the registry, but for those like me who are not computer technicians, this was an easy fix.

Re: RE: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

Id like to try this fix, but to be honest Im a bit nervous about it.  Ive done a Norton Ghost backup in case of any major disasters, but still I'd like to be pretty sure Im doing the right things.

In terms of what erdaka suggested, when I go to the first registry value and right click on  "DsContinuousRate" and then hit modify, is it intended that I should type "=dword:00000001" into the value data box, or should i be typing "00000001".  (I take it that the hexadecimal value should be checked).

When erdaka says "Aslo make sure "DsContinuousRate" is set to 1 or the video will stick when ff and rw'ing."  How do I do this?

Does this make any sense or am I talking total rubbish.

Re: RE: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

I used to have the windvd driver installed on my PC, but had issues with resuming into play following a fast forward command.  Also, my picture quality left something to be desired.

I have recently changed codecs to the Nvidia PureVideo Platinum codec, and I have to say that this is much better.  Ive only got a CRT 28'' widescreen tv, so the quality does not need to be as high as for other users of the forum, but this seems to give me *almost* perfect picture quality.

Re: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

Last night I went into the registry and made the change.  My wife walked through the room and noticed a difference without any prompting, and my dell dimension4700 ran on live tv for 2 hours with out a snag.  But yes, load times and channel surfing are slowed drammatically, but a small price to pay!!!!

THANKS FOR MAKING MY GREEN BUTTON DO SO MUCH MORE

Re: RE: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

Does this fix also apply to Vista MCE, I know the decoder/encoder in Vista is better than in MCE 2005 - but can we also enhanced it further by using this Live TV fix ?

Anyone got any experience with this in Vista ?

    Thanks
    /Peter

Re: LiveTV Quality - A Fix?

I made the registry tweak yesterday to 60000000 and reboot my MCE 2005 box.  Let me tell you...WOW, what a dramatic difference in picture quality.  Live TV now has richer color and sharper more defined images.  Starting Live TV does take a few seconds longer, but who cares.

I am loving the picture.  Thanks for posting such an informative thread!!

    Much appreciated,

    Kannona  :)
