    Re: Help

Okay, I rebooted the Vista Media Center and now it works great with your batch file.  Thank you very much for your assistance.

    Hi Richard.

Since the batch file is in the startup menu, does that mean that every time one reboot the WHS, he has to go login and logout so the script runs and the Recorde TV share is properly configured ?

If yes, wouldn't there be a way to set the script so it runs at boot time, without having to login/logoff ??

    Thanks, Martin.

Hi. I got this working now, but I notice a limitation and I wonder if it can be fixed. When using the MCE and browsing Recorded TV, the recorded programs that reside on the WHS don't have a preview icon, while those stored localy on the MCE PC do have one. Is this normal ?

Is there other such limitations (if it is) that I should be aware of ?

    Thanks.

    Re: Help

I have gotten this working successfully, in the sense that I am able to record directly to the WHS.

However, when one PC is recording, the other PCs can't see the recorded shows in MCE (I get Video Error message, although I can play the file if I go to the server folder and right-click and click "play in Media Center", although this still doesnt force the file name to show in the Recorded TV section).

AND the other PCs can't record to the server.  I get an error message saying there is not enough space.

Help!  Is anyone else getting this to work with multiple PCs recording at the same time?  Without this ability, it's pretty much a deal-breaker and I'll have to go to something that copies the files down at night.

FYI, I have both MCE 2005 and Vista Prem PCs.

I do have access to Server 2k8.  I wonder if I'd be able to do this in that environment?

    Thanks,

    Rich

    Re: Help

I had this working with a Vista PC and had recorded several shows over a couple days direct to the WHS.  The trouble came about when I added an MCE 2k5 box and kicked off a record on that box.  Then I lost any ability to see the shows or start a recording on the Vista machine.  Even after turning off the MCE box and rebooting both the vista and WHS machines several times, the Vista box is only showing me the 3 sample videos that come with the machine and are on the C drive.  Even though I do not have the C drive in either the watched folders or record to folder in regedit.  I only have the server listed in both places.  UGH!  Even after changing the MCE back to recording to it's internal E drive, I cant get vista to go back to recording to WHS.  what do I do?

    Re: Help

A couple other things that might help diagnose this...

I have each PC with it's own Username / Password combo and they are set to auto login and auto see WHS.

I have the Guest account activated, without a password on the WHS.

Do I need to be logging in with the guest account on all PCs that are recording to WHS?  If so, how do I auto login as a Guest?

    Re: Help

OK, so my VMC is back to recording to the WHS, maybe because I shut the MCE out.  And, if I go into each recorded file and add "Everyone" with full permissions to each recording, VMC will then see the recordings again.  Will have to try turning on MCE again tomorrow, maybe while VMC is recording something, to see what happens.

Re: Playing recorded tv or recording live tv to WHS.

I must say I think this method seems brilliant, maybe apart from the fact that recordings will fail upon network failure or if the server is down for one reason or the other.

The other method I have found as an alternative to this is TV Manager (Beta 3 here).

In short TV Manager works by installing one part on the server and one on the media center. After a recording has finished it is immediately moved to the server. As my knowledge of how the process works in detail is detailed at best I wonder if anyone could help me outline the pros and cons of each method. As far as I see it right now, TV Manager might have the edge as it does not depend on the network connection, but apart from that im not sure. Any thoughts?

Re: Playing recorded tv or recording live tv to WHS.

This sounds like a really cool option and I am interested in trying it out. The idea of unlimited storage for a media center recorded tv folder is great! I have a Dell XPS 420 with two cablecard tuners.

(I used MCE 2005 and VMC in the early days but bailed and switched to a Tivo S3 when the early cablecard PC's were costing $5000. I am eager to play with VMC again.)

I read through a FAQ somewhere on cablecard pc's (Chris L's blog maybe) and it stated that cablecard pc's could not record live to a backend server such as WHS. However, I see that users have said the solution works fine with DRM'd files. Is anyone doing this with cablecard recordings? Also, I am interested in applying the hack to allow 4 cablecard tuners to work on the XPS and I wonder about recording 4 HD shows to the WHS across the network and streaming one or two shows to Xbox 360 extenders at the same time. I have a D-Link router that provides Gigabit performance on the LAN side. Any one have any experience or thoughts to share?

    Thanks!

    Re: Help

I have had this working fine and then being able to view recorded tv from whs just seems to go away.  I run the batch file and still nothing.  I tried various versions of the batch file and still nothing.  I am currently using the 120 day evaluation verion and also this probem using the beta.

I do seem to get an error with the batch file.

Users have open files on Recorded TV. Continuing this operation will force the files closed.  Do you want to continue this operation. Y/N.

I have tried the TV Manager plugin and cannot get it working because of an error in mce.  I am currently moving by server recorded tv files to an external drive to plug into my mce machine.

When recorded tv is no longer showing from the server what is the easy fix or most likely cause.  I can access the recorded tv folder desktop link just fine from my vista mce machine but they do not show within media center recorded tv.

    Re: Help

    Hi Richard,

I have attempted to set this up a few times now and no matter what I do, I cannot record TV to my WHS. I followed your post at the top of the thread and VMC will not record to the WHS. I get an error that there is not enough disk space available. I have tried recording Live TV (which I wasn't sure would work anyway) and I have tried scheduling recordings. The scheduled recordings are flagged with an exclamation point which indicates that the recording won't happen as there is not enough disk space. What am I missing? Thanks!

    Re: Help

Ever since I got my WHS, I have been trying to set it up so that Recorded TV is stored on the server.  What should be quite easy is extremely difficult.  I tried your method but did not get very far.  When I tried to edit the registry on my Vista PC, I got as far as where I was supposed to open the Watched Folder key.  I could not even see it because the Recording key was restricted.  How do I get by that?

Your instructions now go on for 5 pages.  Could you put them all together with a final version of what really works?  I know that is asking a lot but I am sure many people would find that useful.

Right now I am using TVManager, a free add-in for WHS.  It seems to be working so far.  One problem is that my Vista PC does not go back to sleep after a recorded tv program has been moved to the server.  Any advice on how to fix this?

    Re: Help

Hi! I did, as you, have quite a few problems setting everything up and also I didn't really like the fact that recordings will fail if you network goes down or the server reboots. Now I run Brent Friedman's excellent TV Manager which after a recording has finished automatically moves the recording to the server (without guest account issues). I really recommend you to try it out! It also makes sure that "Recorded TV" is updated so that it contains both recordings on you local drive (pending move) and recordings on the server.
