    mbial:
Do we have a clear solution for transcoding yet? Is the built-in transcoder working? If not, is there a way to simply mount an avi or mkv as a disk image so it can be played on my XBox 360 extender? Thanks in advance.

Hi all, Yes the developers are still working on this project (to the extent that their personal time permits).  I am par tof the group that worked on the importers.  Anyway, their has been some discussion recently centering around transcoding.  While transcoding certainly works, the native file dvr-ms works smoothly whether watching on your PC or an extender.

This is what I do to add movies to my OML:

    The software I use:

DVDProfiler is used to catalog my movies, it also exports a detailed XML file
AnyDVD / CloneDVD2 are used to rip the DVD to my hard drive
VideoReDo converts the DVD to a DVR-MS file
DVR-MS will load / scan the DVDProfiler (Tools menu) for details about movie, and apply them to the DVR-MS file
OMLImporter using the DVR-MS import will allow you to import one or more dvr-ms files and it will automatically import the metadata from the dvr-ms file.  Anytime you need to rebuild your OML database, the metadata is still stored in the dvr-ms file.

Once you've imported the movies you can then delete the ripped DVD folder.

I've read some good things about the WMVHD format and I'm going to begin looking into adding that as a step in my process and testing that against the extenders I have.  However, right now this works beautifully on my XBOX 360, HP MediaSmart TV, and my PC.

BTW, my wife has finally figured out how to push the green button on the HP MediaSmart TV remote! Now she can watch TV without asking me to turn it on for her.

    This is my routine:

    1. Start DVDProfiler, CloneDVD2
    2. Drop a DVD in the drive and wait for DVDProfiler to recognize it
    3. Add it to DVDProfiler, I've added a TAG for DVRMS files so I can keep track of them and report on them. Run the command file to export the library as XML.  Close DVDProfiler
    4. Use CloneDVD2 to "Copy a title"; close CloneDVD2 when it is done.
    5. Use VideoReDo to convert the DVD folder to a DVR-MS file.
    6. Use DVRMS to apply the metadata to the dvr-ms file.
    7. Use the OML Importer to add the dvr-ms file to the OML Library.
    8. Watch and enjoy the movie with complete support for skipping, rewind, and fast forwarding, even Info button Movie Details support.

    Hope this helps.

TVRocks - thanks for the prompt reply, however many of us already have movies in avi and mkv format and don't want to have to re-rip these movies per your instructions. That said - can you please revisit my previous post? We want to be able to watch these formats on extenders without all the time needed to reencode or re-rip. Thanks again for your continued support.

    Best,
    Matt

Re: Open Media Library - souce posted

I've tried MyMovies as well as the built-in DVD Library and OML is *exactly* the look, feel and finish I am (was) trying to achieve! Thanks a ton! I can't wait to play with it more.

I see there are a number of ways to import your media as well as tag them, what is the preferred way/app to use?

    Thanks!

anyone know where the executable for the OML is? I'm trying to map it to a keyboard shortcut so that I can reprogram my remote to launch OML when the DVD button is pressed.

    thanks.

So, I downloaded the latest build of OML yesterday and much progress has been made since my last visit.  I was very happy to see the DB editor has been updated, AND that it imported my Movie Collectorz DB flawlessly.  The only thing I'm wondering is if its possible to turn off the Transcoding process for extender?  I remember reading that the transcoding isnt even active in the daily builds, but on my 2100 I get an exception and the movie wont play.  All my movies dont need to be transcoded as they are all XVids.  Any help would be great.

I get the same thing with WMV files, which play natively on all extenders, so they aren't filtering at all; it's just a blanket "transcode everything".

I haven't tried r851 yet, but if that's what you have and it's not working right with the extender you need to revert back to version r795. It was the last working version before they started working on the transcoding stuff.

    Hi,

This looks very interesting. But is there a way to select the player of your choice ? For example play DVD with Theaterte and play BD with Total media Theater ? Or is it limited to the default VMC player ?

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Since this thread is getting huge, can somewhere direct me on how to get this working on an extender?  My setup has all my movies (in vob format) on a Windows Home Server. I have a Vista Media center running the extender.  I tried playing a few, but it said the file could not be found or not the correct format.  they played fine on the Vista machine, just not the extender.  thanks

If you are trying the daily builds, transcoding is not working, since there is work to move to an OML internal transcoding service.

The old .2b beta release should work with transcode 360 I believe.
