RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

I was having this problem, where the computer would go into S3 standby mode (fans off) but the checkbox in the device manager for allowing this device to bring the computer out of standby was greyed out. I have a Gigabyte ga7vaxp with a saphire theatre 550 pro tv tuner. it is a jumperless mobo with no 5vsb jumper. The bios does have an "allow USB device to bring out of standby" setting which I enabled. I then went into the registry and changed both the USB settings, USBBIOSHACKS to 0 and USBBIOSx 0 in CurrentControlSet, CurrentControlSet001, CurrentControlSet002, CurrentControlSet003 (just to be safe, I did notice that when I changed it in CurrentControlSet it automatically changed it in the 001 and 002 but not in 003). Then I used the dumppo (dump-poo ;-P) to set the min to S3. I went into the device manager and the checkbox was not greyed out anymore, so I went thru and checked the box in a few of the items in the device manager that I thought might be related to the remote. Once I restarted the computer I was able to put the computer into S3 standby with the power button on the remote and wake the computer up. It takes about 10-15 seconds to get back to live TV (it seems to allways stop/pause live TV and ask me to resume it when I turn it on with the remote)

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

i've got a generic question here, if your bios is originally set to "s1 or s3" how do you dictate which mode it goes into? mine was set this way from the factory (pundit-r) and it goes in and out of standby with the fans on no problem. but for the life of me i can't figure out how to force it one way or the other...

edit*** something else i just thought to ask, does "2.b Turn on ACPI 2.0 support (and any other advance power support options)" have to be done prior to installing 2005? i enabled it afterward and didn't notice anything unique in the windows power mgmt tabs...

one thing is kind of annoying on the pundit though, the power led is so bright to begin with, that when it just sits there blinking, it's really really annoying.

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

I have this problem - any help is appreciated.

I can go into S3 without any problems.

I can wake up from S3 with the remote. Only problem is it does NOT wake up completely:

    • Fans starts
    • HD starts
    • Nothing else!

When I manually click reset on the PC Case, wake up continues and all is fine.
So I have to get out of my chair to wake MCE, and I cannot schedule a recording.

I tried to reinstall - same problem. I'm on the verge of building a small circuit that can press the reset button for me, when the fans get started.

caveman, I have the exact same problem with my Radeon 9800 Pro.  It sounds like we have a similar set up and are having the same issue.  I have memorized the key presses on the remote that closes the MCE interface and takes me back to the Win XP screen.  When it does this, I regain my screen.  I then go back in to the MCE interface and it works fine.

I have not resolved it yet other than my work around.  I think I will either upgrade my drivers (if there are any updates), or possibly downgrade them if I can find an old MCE version.

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

well done, this is a great post. having followed the instructions to the point it worked magically. the key points, S3 on the motherboard, the registry hack and a re-install of the drivers for the eHome under the Keyboard section in Hardware profile worked a treat.

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

seems I can never get to the dumppo download when I need it.  Lost a raid array on a rebuild and didn't know it wasn't backing up correctly (figures).

    Any alternative download sites???

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

I read the post, but on my Soltek motherboard I cannot see any setting for USB wake up in the bios menu. I see wake on LAN/modem and the I can set different IRQ's - but none regarding USB. Can the USB be assigned to a IRQ to monitor.

Please help - would be greatly appreciated.

I have have usb wake either. older mobos you need to see how to set power to the usb during sleep, usually a jumper if not always on anyhow. Then you can just set the remote keyboard driver in windows to wake from standby, thats usually all it takes for that part. you may need the usb hack in the reg for the power tab to appear in the driver settings.

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

I thought I should share what I did to get s3 standby working properly on my machine.  My motherboard is an ABIT KN8 Ultra, (BIOS rev12).  I didn't end up doing it in this order, but if I had to do it again, this is what I'd do:

    1.    Unplugged machine, set jumpers to enable USB wakeup on the ports to which the IR transceiver and wireless keyboard/mouse are connected.

    2.    Rebooted into BIOS and enabled "suspend to s3" and "USB wakeup" in the bios; disabled "wake on" everything else.  Saved BIOS and rebooted into windows.

    3.    Downloaded dumppo.exe and ran "dumppo.exe admin minsleep=s3" and "dumppo.exe admin maxsleep=s3"

    4.    In "Device Manager" under "Universal Serial Bus controllers," "USB Root Hub," "Power Management" tab, disabled "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby."

    5.    In "Device Manager" under "Human Interface Devices," "Microsoft eHome Remote Consumer Controls," disabled "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby."

    6.    In "Device Manager" under "Human Interface Devices," "Microsoft eHome Remote Control Keyboard Keys," disabled "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby."

    7.    In "Device Manager" under "Network Adapters," "[your network card]," "Power Management" tab, enabled everything.

    8.    Ran registry hack provided by CrAzY. (first page of this thread).  Rebooted.

    9.    In "Device Manager" under "Human Interface Devices," "Microsoft eHome Remote Consumer Controls," re-enabled "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby."

    10.   In "Device Manager" under "Human Interface Devices," "Microsoft eHome Remote Control Keyboard Keys," re-enabled "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby."

In my case, there were a couple things which sidetracked me.  Firstly, upon running "dumppo.exe admin", I could see, even though I installed MCE2005 with "suspend to s3," Windows was set with "minsleep=s1" and "maxsleep=s4," so I changed them both to s3.  At that point, after having done everything EXCEPT step 7 above, I was able to put the machine into S3 standby and bring it out using the remote.  But the machine was waking itself up between 10 to 60 seconds later, all on its own.

This is where the "Event Viewer" (in Control Panel under "Administrative Tools") came in handy.  When I looked at the "System" section of the log, I found there was a "Tcpip" entry which coincided with when the machine was waking itself up.  It read, "The system detected that network adapter [my network adapter] was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter."

On a whim, under the "Power Management" tab for the network adapter, I enabled "Only allow management stations to bring the computer out of standby" and found I was then able to put the machine into S3 - have it stay there - and bring it out with the remote.  Hallelujah.

I'm not sure why, even though I had "wake on LAN" disabled in the BIOS, it was waking itself up (a bug, perhaps?), but I do know that was the last setting I changed before it worked perfectly.

Thanks to CrAzY, dancook, juksey, Quicksilver, deadfish and everyone else who posted to this thread.

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

    Same here - my setup:

    ASUS A7N8X DEluxe mobo
    AMD 3000+
MCE 2005 + all the auto updates

MCE eHome Remote update rollup 1

Have followed all the advice for S3 suspend support and it works fine - except the TV shows a black screen, then the machine completely shuts down as if I pulled the power cord out.

Anyone having this problem or hopefully a FIX please reply and lets see if we can all crack it!

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

I am having a problem trying to wake up from S3 standby using the Microsoft MCE remote...

The MCE remote puts it into S3 with no problems but the Microsoft IR receiver LED is not blinking when I send it the PC power up command when in S3...

I have looked in the device manager but I have now power management tab (as discussed in earlier in this thread)

I am wondering if its the USB +5v issue, but again I can't find any reference to this in the motherboard manual my board is a ASUS A8N-SLI Premium.....

I can get it in and out of S3 by using the case's power button i.e.  when I push the case's power button it goes in S3 no problems...  Push it again and it comes out ok...

Its just the issue of not wakeing with the MCE remote....

    Any idea would be appreciated..

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

Hey Stealth. Use the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe manual. In that manual you will see the location of the jumpers. But be aware, Delux mobo is already set to +5VSB. According with this pic...

    http://www.hothardware.com/image_popup.cfm?image=big_a8nsataports.JPG&articleid=704&t=a

...the jumper is set to the right side. Just move it to the left. In your actual manual the jumper is called CHASIS.

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

    Eskeda,

Thanks for your reply but no good!

The chassis jumper / +5VSB_MB only has three pins so if I move the jumper it does not connect the +5VSB_MB to anything..  If it was there I would need to add a jumper plug otherwise I would get the case intrusion tamper alert...

Good thinking but back to the drawing board!

    Anybody else have any idea's?

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

So the jumper was already at +5VSB, right? Good for you!
