    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

You're right, I misspoke about "Media Center Extender" functionality.  A friend bought a recent Samsung LCD TV and he says he can use it to access his home network server and watch video he recorded with BeyondTV.

Other (Linksys, D-Link) Extenders have a 200MHz ARM processor.

Interesting. Any idea if this is faster?  So this might be the extender to go with assuming it works with all TV's with the remote and line of sight.

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

I see one problem with this extender... it have to be connected via HDMI-CEC to the TV, suppose you want to see a video with 5.1 audio encoded... How do you get the 5.1 audio to the receiver???? the optical audio output at the TV only outputs 2-channel audio... Am I missing something?

I asked Sammy again at CEDIA about display support.  Same answer, Samsung displays only.  With that, I forget to play attention to the speed of the actual Extender.  Nice looking box though.

It's now listed on BestBuy's website "Coming Soon".  Nothing on Amazon's website

Here are 2 things that are interesting... (could be misinformation on Best Buy's part)

    • Installs easily on the back of your compatible TV (mounting adapter required, not included)
So it is $200 plus whatever the mounting adapter costs...  It's looking less and less attractive from a cost standpoint.

    • Includes remote for easy media control
Isn't this supposed to use the existing TV remote?

For $200 it's better to get the flexibility of the DMA2100 or DMA2200 so you aren't tied to a Samsung TV.. I thought the original price floating around was $99..

Maybe the extra horsepower will make a difference.. I guess time will tell.

    Vista Ultimate with TV Pack
    Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.2GHz (OC'd to 2.9) / 4 Gigs Ram
    c: 80 Gig d: 500 Gig SATA
    Tuners: PVR-500 / HDHomeRun x 2 / WinTV 1600
    Extenders: DMA-2200 / DMA-2100 x 2

Linksys V1 extender (for sale..anyone interested?)

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

Interesting to see that it is finally showing-up somewhere in the retail chain...

I would label the first part as an error on Best Buy's part as it clearly states on on Page 2 of the User Manual that the Mounting Bracket (and, a rarity in consumer electronics, an HDMI cable) are included, along with the remote (you can use the remote from your existing compatible TV as well, but they're providing this simplified one that has a Green Button for MCE which your TV remote presumably doesn't)...

As for the $199 price, that is the only number I've seen bounced about in all my wanderings (though we can hope that somewhere it will be available for less than this MSRP)...

This could (in theory) be at the top of the Extender-only (no non-Extender functionality like DVD, etc found in DSM2200 and XBOX 360 as the User Manual for this would suggest that it's only function is as a Windows Vista Media Center Extender, and that it isn't designed to do anything like DLNA/UPnP connectivity to a non-Media Center "server") list for anyone that is considering buying for a compatible Samsung TV (and possibly with any other TV that supports HDMI-CEC, someone will have to get their hands on it and test first), given the following:
     -  Added horsepower over the Linksys DMA2100/DLink DSM-750 (and perhaps even the HP Media Smart Connect, if you have no need for the drive bay)
     -  With HDMI-CEC, it will power off automatically a few minutes after the TV is powered off which of course saves power and stops any streaming, which you have to specifically do on the DMA2100 by exiting out of the Extender function because it doesn't power off, thus keeping the Media Center from going into standby).
     - With HDMI-CEC, it doesn't need line of sight for the remote (though I do find it silly that they didn't design the bracket to work with their own TVs when wall-mounted, where having a connected Extender hidden behind the screen w/o line-of-sight would be even more desirable because you don't have a shelf to put it on).

I assume you still can wall mount it - presumably both the wall bracket and extender bracket would overlap in the VESA holes and the screws would go through both.  As you said, it would very silly of them to design it so it couldn't be hidden behind a wall mounted TV.

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

I'm sure that with a little ingenuity it can be rigged to work where the TV's wall-mount bracket, the "bracket rack mounting hole" and the TV's VESA hole all line-up (from the User Manual on pages 38->40, the "bracket rack" only uses one VESA hole, and it is in the middle side of the "bracket rack", making for some added challenge).  It's just silly that they didn't anticipate utility of mounting the extender on the back of the TV especially when the TV is wall-mounted (even when you assume that they only intend this to be compatible with their own TVs)...

Worst case scenario, mount it to the wall behind the TV where it can't be seen...

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

Funny, the only extender which can be said to be decent looking, gets mounted on the back of the TV, out of sight:-) Although, with that giant "SAMSUNG" emblazoned on top, maybe it's not such a bad idea.

Why do most PC peripherals manufacturers assume that the taste level of their customers does not raise above Lay-z-Boys and mounted singing fish...?

My DMA2100 looks like it was cobbled together from Radio Shack parts circa 1980.

HDMI-CEC support is going to be awesome for extenders.

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

Does anyone know if this would work in the UK. It would obviously need a US > UK power adaptor, can anyone else see any other problem?

Now that both countries use the same high definition resolutions there shouldn't be any PAL vs SECAM vs NTSC issues, should there??
