Re: messenger failed, windows messenger not installed

in the proccess of following the steps in this post, i first updated my windows messenger to 5.1. Still had the error. I did the reg.fix which got rid of the error and now i can recieve messeges but cannot send them through the MCE 2005 interface. Now i have uninstalled v5.1 and cannot seem to find v4.7 anywhere and do not know how to make it load off the XP disk. Any ideas?

I tried those steps yesterday, lol. No workie.

Yeah, I tried a system restore to the day before SP3 update. But that didn't work. Maybe I'll go back earlier.

    Or just forget about it.

I whipped up a quick blog entry on this, complete with reg files to simplify things.

Hope someone finds it somewhat useful.

Windows Messenger error in Media Center Edition 2005

Re: messenger failed, windows messenger not installed

I have tried most of these fixes.  After updating to SP3 as part of this and some of the other changes, I no longer have the option to uncheck in MCE/Settings.  I uninstalled KB946648, I made the regedit change, I tried the access settings, etc.  I updated Messenger to 5.1.  My PC is 4 years old, but I have done all the updates all along through Windows Update.  When I did the security fixes Aug 17, I stopped being able to use LiveTV.  After all these fixes, I no longer see a Messenger failed to open, it just kicks me right out of MCE completely.

It is obvious this is a result of the Aug 14 security releases, but I can't seem to do a system restore either, no matter what date I pick it goes through as if it is going to restore, but then comes up after the reboot saying there have been no changes (there have been at least 3 updates since May when it won't go back any further, but will not restore to a single restore point).

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.  I am so frustrated, I have spent so much time trying to get my Live TV back up so I can record.

    THANKS.

If you're still running a 4 year old install of windows, I'd save all the time and start over from scratch.

Re: messenger failed, windows messenger not installed

Do you mean start with the original Sony Vaio OEM installation disks for Windows XP or Media Center and then do 4 years of updates to it?

Re: messenger failed, windows messenger not installed

I'm not even sure I could get all the applications configured and updated (some of the stuff is now old versions, Sonic and Sony and Outlook Express and the DSL connection setup, etc.).  Do you mean to reload XP or Media Center?  This would not only be risky, it would take days.

Re: messenger failed, windows messenger not installed

More info:  I no longer get the windows messenger message but I can not view recorded or live tv.  Media Center kicks out to the desktop.

This is the event viewer error

    id 7034

The COM+ System Application service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 12 time(s).

Re: messenger failed, windows messenger not installed

Do you have to uninstall XP, then install the four years old version, and then the four years of updates?  I assume all other applications would have to be uninstalled also?

Note that you'll also have to apply this fix for extenders. It won't kick you out of the extender session, but you'll have a dialogue box to OK out of when it powers on.

Ooh, I just saw that nice blog. I opted for the second option. Thanks, Jason!

Re: messenger failed, windows messenger not installed

If you're having problems with the update and still want to retain MCE windows messenger integration, just find and install windows messenger 4.7 (I always keep a copy of that installer as it comes in handy for situations like this). That is as far as i am aware, the only MCE2005 compatible version. Next time you run windows/microsoft update, make sure you skip/disable the offending update. Hopefully microsoft will release a fixed update that doesn't cause this problem.

No, 5.1 is compatible. The fix is in the above linked blog.
