Re: ngRC - next generation Remote Control (use your PSP or iPhone as Remote-Control)

I had my stats wrong.  I have 700 albums and 6200 songs.  I've left the 'my music' in the 'Loading, please wait...' for up to 48 hrs and it won't finish loading the cache.

Has anyone got this working on this type of scale?

It works perfectly on my test machine with very few albums and songs.

HP Elite m9000t - Vista Ultimate
    Intel 2 Quad (2.4GHz)
    4GB 800MHz RAM
    1Tb Disk Space (Raid 5)
    512MB NVIDIA 8600GT
Blu-ray writer / HD DVD player
4 x ATI Digital Cable Wonder
    Xbox 360 CAT6
    2 x DMA 2100 Linksys N-Wireless

FWIW, my music library is very similar in size.

651 albums, 8035 songs.   The application works fine for me (though I did uninstall it).  I believe it did take one or two minutes on that initial load, but it performed reasonably after that, taking just one or two seconds to load each page of artists.

My MCE machine is nothing to write home about either.  I think it's a single-core P4 running at 3.0 GHz.  It has a couple gigs of RAM and it's about 4 years old.

    Hope this helps,
    Aaron

this piece of software is really a great idea and it actually works for me. Here's my list of flaws that I noticed. I hope this will be usefull to you.

       - memory / cpu usage : I have a big music library and the software should not load it enterely in memory. It takes time, cpu and memory.

       - inerface for browsing through the library : the interface should use Iphone lists rather than paging. It is really unusable with a big library

       - control of WMC should not be done by simulating keypress but by really using the WMC API, like a standard IR remote must do (I guess). This way the controls would work even if WMC is not focused.

       - the green button should be abble to launch WMC

    Regards,

    Philippe

    anything new to report?
I still get the stupid error about the extender.txt file not available. Tried multiple installs on 2 separate machines and still the error.

Am I the only 1? is there a fix? is there anything new to report about progress?

Re: ngRC - next generation Remote Control (use your PSP or iPhone as Remote-Control)

This is literally one of the best applications associated with Media Center that I have seen ever since using MCE 2005 in late 2003.

My comments echo what has already been said; the back button when browsing Music items does take the user back to the main window rather than to the previous screen.  The font does seem to be a little small as well.

If this functionality could be ported to a device-specific installable app rather than having to use in in a web browser that would be the ultimate.  This would include the iPhone/iPod Touch centric scrollable menus rather than next-page-type menus. If an installable app for the iPhone/iPod Touch is beyond the capabilities of the developer then maybe developing an interface similar to how Facebook renders on the iPhone/iPod Touch where it is designed for touch control and the screen size but still within Safari.

Regardless, these are only what I would consider upgrades to an already-excellent application for Media Center.

ok found the issue with my 64bit Vista box ..

there is a server element to tomcat which runs on port 8005 ..

if you look in C:\Program Files (x86)\ngrc\tomcat\conf\Server.xml

you can see it.. I changed it to 8006 and everything works!!

    cheers

Re: ngRC - next generation Remote Control (use your PSP or iPhone as Remote-Control)

I've been using ngRC again today, I'm still thinking this is a kick ass bit of software! I really hope the developer is carrying out further development and taking on board some of the ideas and bugs raised on this thread?

I'd really like to see an "Add to playlist" confirmation notifcation, as I added the same album to the queue several times thinking it was not working. It really should be called "Add to Queue" not playlist.

Also it would be much better if you can actually access the VMC queue from ngRC don't think this is currently possible. So you can see what albums are queued up to play and double check the ones you have added are listed.

When can we expect beta version 2.0 or 1.1. or whatever???

    Cheers.

The project pages over at SourceForge look very much dead to me, so I'd be surprised if anyone is working on a newer version.

I was hoping this might not be the case, its a killer app and could be better still with a little more lovin from the developer.

agreed.  If it isn't being worked by the original developer, it would be great to get the source code and continue the work.
