Re: Tips and FAQs - V.2

I had a mishap with my media center, and had to restore to an earlier ghosted version a couple of weeks ago, I went to playback an mkv file and it didnt work cause I had not set it up, so I came here naturally.

Problem is, neither method is working for me, I have tried with and without coreavc but it just wont work in any scenario.

If I rename them .avi they work in WMP, but not VMC.

If they are named .mkv they wont play in either player.

    Ideas???

What am I doing wrong?! No codec packs installed, I have installed only ffdshow and Matroska Splitter ... windows media player plays anything I want (MKV& AVI) fine.

Vista Media Center ... no such luck ... will only play DVD and WMV!

Defo a problem with Media Center using codecs as the message "CANNOT PLAY VIDEO

ONE OR MORE CODECS REQUIRED TO OPEN THIS CONTENT COULD NOT BE FOUND" comes up.

I went to view one of my boys xvids and it failed with codecs on a video his would play, so I knew there was more than mkv's wrong now.  Uninstalled and reinstalled ffdshow and bingo, mkv's now play.   Perhaps ffdshow needs to be installed AFTER the reg changes?
