Catalyst Reports Wrong Memory Size?

    Catalyst Reports Wrong Memory Size?

I'm currently troubleshooting a new HTPC build based on:

Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H with integrated ATI HD3200 GPU

    AMD Athlon X2 6000+

2G OCZ DD2 dual channel kit

I'm running Windows MCE 2005 with an ATI HDTV Wonder.  I'm having stability issues with video playback and live tv.  The system randomly freezes, reboots, event log has errors about driver being in an infinite loop, etc.

For now, my first question is, shouldn't the memory size reported by CCC on a 780G graphics system be equal to the UMA frame buffer size set in the BIOS?  No matter what frame size I set (Auto, 128, 256, or 512M), CCC shows under hardware information that my display's memory size is 700MB.  Windows reports the system's memory correctly, equaling to the difference between 2G and 128, 256, or 512M.  Is this a sign of a true hardware problem w/ the motherboard and/or RAM?  TIA.

What is your power supply's power rating?

Re: Catalyst Reports Wrong Memory Size?

    More detailed hardware specs:

    • Antec SmartPower 2.0 450W (included w/ Antec Sonata II case)
    • 1 Maxtor 20G IDE 7200 RPM HD (Boot Drive)
    • 2 Seagate 160G SATA 7200 RPM HDs (RAID 0 array)
    • 1 Samsung SATA DVD+RW
    • ATI HDTV Wonder PCI Card
    • Canopus ADVC-50 mounted in 5.25" bay, molex powered
    • USB Devices - 2 inkjet printers, scanner, MS wireless mouse, MCE remote, UPS
    • Stock AMD CPU Fan
    • Antec 120mm Tricool rear fan on medium
    • Scythe 120mm S-Flex 1200RPM front intake fan

    Software:

    • AMD Processor Driver Version 1.3.2.0053 (Cool'n'Quiet, also enabled in BIOS)
    • AMD Dual-Core Optimizer Version 1.1.4
    • Nvidia PureVideo MPEG Decoder w/ HW acceleration on
    • ATI Catalyst 8.45 (from CD that came w/ mobo) - I originally tried the latest 8.9 drivers, then downgraded to try to get rid of the random system freezes.
    • Kram drivers for HDTV Wonder
    • Realtek R1.98 (5.10.0.5657) Audio drivers
    • Realtek 5.696.0616.2008 LAN drivers

Yesterday I corrected an issue w/ the mobo not correctly recognizing my memory at DDR2 800.  I just noticed that it was setting the memory at DDR2 667 when I ran memtest.  Everything is set to auto in the BIOS as I'm not an OC'er, so I corrected this by manually setting the memory to 800.  Both memtest and Microsoft's memory tester (referenced by AMD's support site) reported no errors.  I thoroughly ran the tests by running them with each DIMM swapped out in the 2 slots, and setting the UMA buffer to 128M as I'm assuming this video memory cannot be accessed by memory testers.

I believe so far I've ruled out the memory being the problem.  Could it be my power supply?  I would be surprised if a brand new Antec 450W was not sufficient.  My old system had an Antec 350W with a 4th harddrive, a floppy, and an ATI X1300 AGP video card hooked up to it, and I never had lockups or any other major issues with it.

But back to my original question, should I be concerned that Catalyst (and aslo Windows display properties) report an adapter memory size of 700 MB?

You mentioned stability issues, so I was concerned about the PSU. You're cutting it pretty close with all that stuff in it. But it could be any number of things and I'm throwing out guesses.

Re: Catalyst Reports Wrong Memory Size?

So far, I only got one reply from someone on the ATI.AMD forums that also has 700 MB memory size reported in CCC on a 790GX board.  From searching here, I know plenty of people use 780G based boards for their MCPCs, what are you all seeing being reported as the memory size on your integrated ATI HD3200 graphics adapter?  TIA.

Re: Catalyst Reports Wrong Memory Size?

Just stumbled across this. I've not checked because it just works. I'll just check now...
mine says 1019MB in catalyst graphics hardware info. My board has 2GB of ram installed (which computer properties reports as 2.0GB) and 128MB of built in sideport memory.

Re: Catalyst Reports Wrong Memory Size?

Thanks for replying Vengeance_Irl.  I guess these large memory sizes have something to do with how AMD's Video UMA works.
