You're the man, I've been struggling with this for weeks but the Media Centre Scheduler Service and change the logon to the standard User account details has done the trick. Thanks for posting.

Edit::- hmmm, spoke too soon, I also have an xbox360 as an extender to the main mce machine but with the above change the 360 fails to connect, changed back it connects fine....

Re: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

If the content is copy protected, you will get the warning.  DRM is in play here, and it simply won't allow you to watch it on another PC, regardless of whether its local or "networked".

Re: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

This is a good fix, but unfortunatly it breaks the connection for extenders.

I also tried setting the Media Center Extender Service to start under the shared user, but it made no difference.

Re: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

I've created a small VB utility that will handle all of the required settings (Watched Folders, NullSessionShares, etc.).   Its pretty self explanatory, but there is an included README that outlines known issues and other information.

Let me know how it works for you.

Note: If a show is currently being recorded on another MCE machine, it won't be available, as its still "locked" by the machines that's recording it.  Also, this does nothing for DRM issues.  If its protected, it probably won't play on another computer.

You can reply here, or send feedback to feedback@dougknox.com

Re: RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

I had this working fine with only an entry to watched folders in Tweak MCE. However, after moving new recorded content from the local drive to network share, all of the network share recordings disappeared and I have yet to get this working again after trying every method I can find in the forums.

Any additional ideas out there?  Or more general knowledge about how the Watched Folders process works??

    Thanks,  Josh

Re: RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

Network shares require the appropriate network permissions to be assigned to
the LocalService account. Unfortunately, TweakMCE doesn't make this very
    clear to the user.

    See if this helps you.

Re: RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

Jason, FYI.... you cannot assign permissions to an account. The permission for the account are assigned to the file system via the NTFS Access Control List. I had already tried everything in the posts available on The Green Button.

I think the problem here may have been related to the ReadyNAS device that I am using as it will not allow me to assign the ANONYMOUS LOGON account to the ACL.

However, I was finally able to get this to work by changing the Media Center services to logon as my local administrator account (which in turn has permission to access the file shares). This also enables me to record directly to the network share which is an added bonus.

    Thanks for the response.

Re: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

BIG Thanks to this one.  I Finally have BOTH of my media centers talking to each other.

One thing, Vista will NOT talk to MCE 2005.  So I have re-setup my 2nd media center as MCE 2005 and followed these instructions, and all works!!!

Also, just a note, the Haugpauge 500 does NOT work with Vista (ether 32 or 64).

Re: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

I think I have a slightly different problem. I would like my recordings to be saved on a different, networked computer than the MCE box. But, whenever I use TweakMCE or directly hack the registry to change my RecordedTV folder from the default to a folder on  the other networked drive, it only looks like it takes. When I start a recording, the folder immediately reverts back to the default and records the program there. I've changed Storage folder, Watched folder even the DVR folder (where the TempRec directory is). I'm the only user w/Admin powers, but nothing. Any ideas?Confused [8-)]

Re: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

Yup, i'm having the same issue.  The registry setting seems to work (along with TweakMCE), but when I go back to MediaCenter, even after a reboot, it is still looking only in the standard folder..

I had problems with this as well. I used this utility and it worked: http://www.dougknox.com/xpmce/utils/mce_sharetv.html

Re: RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

    Paul S (UK):

Can anyone shed any light on this problem with watched folders:

I have 2 MCEs setup to watch each other's recorded tv folders as per instructions above.  All works fine after initial setup, each machine can see each others recordings no problem.  However, when a new recording is made on mce 1, sometimes it shows up on mce 2 almost instantly, other times it won't show at all.  Only way to fix the problem seems to be to reboot the machine - in this example, mce 2.  Rebooting seems to force it to refresh the watched folders - is there is a time interval at which the watched folders list is refreshed?

Yes, there is a way to do this.

You need to stop and restart the ehrec process, to do this, 1) stop the service then 2) restart it:

    Stop command: net stop ehsched

    Start command: net start ehsched

The next time you enter the Recorded TV on the target machine, it will refresh the list.  You could setup a batch file to do this and either a) execute it on demand or b) schedue it to run every hour or so for more frequent updates.
