    I have an HP pavilion zv5000 notebook with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000, does anyone know if the regedit thing will work and if the video card is strong enough for it?

    is another site with the same problem.....

    a way around it (but not for me i must say is this!)

    Just open regedit and point to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Display Settings

    Then Add 2 DWORD KEYS called DisableDxCheck and DisableDx9CapsCheck and set both their values to 1 and media center should start without problems and without all those nasty recompiling things

    it works for some, but when i do it, all i get is a blackscreen, and sound :(

    Re: RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

    harakan:

    The error you saw is usually the result of a corrupted file (i.e. the format was changed by your editor so that ilasm cannot recognise it).

    However, it turns out there is a simpler way to disable the memory limitations on MCE without rebuilding ehshell at all - MS provided a built-in hack for this!

    Try downloading the attached .txt file, rename it to 'disabledxcheck.reg', and double-click it to merge it into your registry. Then just double-click the Media Center icon and see what happens...

    you said try downloading the attached .txt file. u mind telling me please where is it attached or where can i find it

    Re: RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

    harakan:

    For some reason the original attachment has gone missing. However, it's very easy to do this without needing any files:

    1) Start, Run, "regedit".

    2) Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Display Settings" in the treeview

    3) Right-click in the right-hand pane, "New", "DWORD Value". Set the name to "DisableDxCheck" (without the quotes),  then double-click it and set the value to 1.

    4) Right-click in the right-hand pane, "New", "DWORD Value". Set the name to "DisableDx9CapsCheck" (without the quotes),  then double-click it and set the value to 1.

    5) Start Media Center, and it should start in full mode... but you may experience some strange effects and stability problems if your video card is not up to the job.

    I tried doing this, but I cannot find the Display Settings, in the registry.
    Does anyone got the reg file to fix this.
    Thanks

    Re: RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

    Here is the lazy mans way:

    Create a new txt doc, call it: DisableDx9CapsCheck.reg

    Paste the following into it:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Display Settings]
    "DisableDxCheck"=dword:00000001
    "DisableDx9CapsCheck"=dword:00000001

    be sure the end extension is .reg not .reg.txt

    For the second do the same except name it: DisableDxCheck.reg

    and paste the following into it:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Display Settings]
    "DisableDxCheck"=dword:00000001
    "DisableDx9CapsCheck"=dword:00000001

    then r-click > merge.

    thats it.

    Re: RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

    Hello every one,

    I had made MCE working on a scrap hardware I had.  My Modest Machine is Celeron 1.2, 512 MB, 160 GB HD, ATI AIW 128, with wireless Keyboard and a DVD burner its a nice machine for browsing Pic's & Music with MC and watching TV outside of MC.

    Anyways I can not upgrade this machine easily, I had tried a Radeon 9250 with 128MB but it crashes with the PC.  The MB is GigaByte and seems conflicting in Memeory address ranges with the Processor to AGP controller!?  I had spent hours trying to fix the machine, updating BIOS, etc., no way ... I guess the MB is AGP 1.0 compliant and some how won't make the R9250 happy!

    Of course I have the incompatibility message, when I tried the registry trick MC started OK but the screen is white, not black, when I closed MC the machine works OK.  My question is, is there is any tweak or drivers or hardware modification for the All-in-wonder Rage Pro 128 to make it work with MC?  Or some one can help me to fix the Radeon issue.

    Thanks a lot, great forum, brilliant ideas.

    Re: RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

    JackyX--

    This is the same thing I did, my spare parts were Athlon 1260, 468 RAM, 160 GB HD, CD drive and a GeForce4 MX440.  I fought stability issues and swapped out every part in the system more than once, changed all the drivers, and flashed the motherboard.  I got the system to run rock-solid, except for when I ran Media Center.  In Media Center, there were all kinds of random crashes and reboots.  It turned out it was the GeForce card, and I never did get it fixed, even when using drivers that other people got to work with Media Center.

    I then upgraded to a GeForce 5200 and the damn thing wouldn't even make it all the way into windows!!!  After a swap for a bigger power supply, all was solved.  I tested the old video card with the new power supply, still had all the random crashes, so I am using the 5200 now with great success.

    Anyway, how big is your power supply-- can it fully support your video card when it is under a load?

    Re: RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

    I went through all of this when I threw together 3 systems a while ago to use as Media Center clients.

    The slowest system I've had Media Center functioning on had a 300MHz Celeron processor in it.

    What I found was you really need a minimum of about a 450MHz Celeron (overclocked 300...), 512MB of RAM (less will work, but it is extremely slow), and an Nvidia PCI 5500 video card (a 5200 should work also, but you can pick up a 5500 or 6200 for the same price).

    The 5500 PCI cards only cost me $40 or less each so I figure this is well worth avoiding the hassle of trying to get a hack to work.  In one system I had to use PCI because the AGP was version 1.0 (and you can't get a video card that will properly run Media Center with an AGP 1.0 interface).  Another one simply didn't have any AGP slots at all (too old).  The very latest system I threw together I used a PCI 6200 video card (for $37).  One concern with the 6200 is it uses a fair bit more power than the 5500.

    I've slowly been replacing the old hardware and my slowest system running MCE 2005 right now is a 733MHz Pentium III, 512MB of RAM, a 20GB hard drive, and a PCI 5500 video card.  If I recall correctly the PSU is a 200W unit and it runs the system without any issues.

    My advice is, if you can, pick up an Nvidia 5500 or 6200 video card.  If you're looking for a totally rock bottom price (and have a spare MCE2005 license because you just upgraded to Vista on one of your systems), you can pick up a $15 PC and a $37 video card and you should have yourself a system that will run reasonably well as a MCE2005 client (watching Recorded TV folders shared from another MCE2005 or Vista system).  The worst feature to these slow systems is the incredibly slow boot times (almost 10 minutes), especially when combined with acquiring a large list of available Recorded TV from the main HTPC.  Hibernate works fairly well though (~30 seconds to come up).

    Re: RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

    Hi Guys,

    I have no idea if anyone is still reading this thread, or if everyone has given up getting lower spec cards working with MCE2005, but I thought I'd share some of my experiences here in the hope that they will help some other people.

    I have an older laptop thats actually isn't all that bad (Athlon 2600+, 1Gb RAM, 80Gb HDD, ProSavageDDR 32Mb card). I was having the same problems that a few people on here were having - the screen was all garbled when trying to access MCE, but because the videocard is built in and its a laptop, I just have to live with it.

    I played about with some of the registry hacks to no avail, but I finally got into MCE by running dxdiag and disabling the DirectDraw functionality.

    Now, I'm not sure whether this is a combination of disabling the DirectDraw and also adding the registry keys to allow cards with lower amounts of VRAM to work, but I thought I'd let you all know anyway!

    Cheers

    Re: RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

    OK...I'm confused now.

    I definetly had this working...I managed to set up the link between my laptop and my 360 and as a result I can access MCE from the 360 now, but not the laptop.

    Doesn't make sense as I didnt change any settings on the laptop, but now I can't access MCE from it. I'm going to play about with it a bit, as its now really buggin me how I managed to get it to work OK.

    As I said previously, it was working perfectly - it let me set up MCE and set up the link to the 360, but now it isnt working. I'm just wondering whether I've changed a setting or something when setting MCE up which has messed things up.

    If I find anything out, I'll post it here.

    Cheers.
