RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

Having just rebuilt my machine and in the process of building 2 more. I don't know if this will help anyone now but I think I have this down to a science. At least for my mobo

This is assuming your about to install mce for the first time or a reformat. I'm just mentioning the items to make sure standby works right, there are other thigns you may need/want to do.

1: make sure your jumpers if any for usb power are set up correctly per your mobo manual.
2: Start with putting in the newest NON BETA bios for your mobo. If its an nforce4 chipset and theres a bios dated in may, DO NOT USE THIS ONE, theres a bug in the sata firmware. go back 1 revision. If your using an asus board, the latest dated in may is fine, they have the issue fixed in theirs and this version includes a fix for the usb remote problem.
2: Change the standby in bios to s3.
3: DO NOT CONNECT YOUR USB RECIEVER FOR THE REMOTE. LEAVE IT DISCONNECTED!
    4: install MCE.
5: put in your chipset drivers, then video drivers then soundcard drivers. That order.
6: run windows update until it doesn't find anything.
7: install your tuner drivers let it reboot.
8: CONNECT THE USB RECIEVER HERE. SIT BACK WHILE IT FINDS IT AND INSTALLS IT.
9: start mce for the first time and do your setup, tv, etc.

At this point, standby should be working correctly.

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

ok, so my method is pretty close its working but something in the bios I'm using is keeping it from S3 wake up with remote.

To describe the problem better, I'm working 100% except when set to s3, the power management tab for the remote under keybaords disapears. With S1 set, I can see it and the remote works perfectly. I have the usb hubs set to not power down, its not a jumper in my case but a driver settings I guess.

Anyone have any ideas how to get the power management tab to be there during s3? I do not have s1 & s3 options in the bios.

I'd rather fix this then downgrade the bios, tehres some bug fixes that I need for other parts of the machie.

Does anyone have another link for dumppo.exe? I can't get to it, it dosen't seem to be available at the listed link anymore.

EDIT:yeah nevermind, helps when I use commandline rather than expecting a webbrowser to login anonymously to an FTP site.

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

First of all, thx for all the great tips on the forum.

I have followed the S3 Standby guide by Deadfish, and it works great except for one thing.
On resume from standby, I have no sound. Everything else is working (video and tv-tuner).
It makes no different if I use the remote or the power button to resume. The sound doesn’t work in either case.

Related or unrelated to the sound problem, I get an error message with the following message.

    "Power Surge On Hub Port
A USB device has exceeded the power limit of its hub port"

The S3 Standby guide I used.

Is there somewhere I can find any info about the S1/S3 thing?

I can only select S1 Only, S3 Only or Auto in the bios.

Are there anybody who can help me with my SBLive S3 problem?

Is there a driver or firmware update to add S3 support?

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

    Hi guys

I have a strange one - My MCE comp (A7N8X-E Deluxe - AthlonXP) works fine for recording and S3 works fine in this regard waking the computer up and recording a show, but the modem is not detected after an s3 power cycle. also the network connection to my server does not always come back and doesn't seem to find itself again even after a long wait. I have also noted that (when I was using them) my directX screensavers wouldn't work after an S3 standby cycle and I have to reboot the PC to get everything working again!

    Any clues???

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

    Hi All,

Great information here, and everything seems to work well, but I have the very odd problem...:

When the computer wakes from standby, mij CLOCK is still the time that it had when it went to go to sleep !!!!  Yes, I know, it sounds funny, but it seems my onboard clock chip is put in sleep also

No, serious, I guess this must be some kinda software problem, since the clock is correct when the computer has stayed completely of for a while.

The system is an european OEM version of the Alienware DHS-2 system, with dual tuner.

Anyone run into this problem also?

    Thanks

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

I've tried every way possible over the past 12 months to get my machine to go into S3 Standby.

I've ran the hack, dumppo, changed jumpers, got drunk, ran the update from Microsoft for the black screen issue, changed the BIOS to S3 only, tried every possible variation of power management settings in the Device Manager, unplugged just about everything that could be causing problems, done two clean installs with S3 set in the BIOS, updated my BIOS, tried again, got drunk again, checked that my hardware will actually allow for S3, made sure the PSU was compatible, searched every board on the planet.  And so far I've managed to get my system to:

    1) Go into S1 and back out again, no problems every time!

    2) Go into S3!!! But not back out again.  Restarted the machine and it wouldn't stay in S3, just kept waking straight back up again!  WITHOUT CHANGING ANYTHING!

    3) Go into S3 but not wake up with remote.  And again I can't get my machine to repeat the same pattern.  After a restart it just woke straight back up after hitting Standby. WITHOUT CHANGING ANYTHING!

    4) Then finally, I've even managed to get the machine to randomly choose whether or not you can even go into Standby!  again WITHOUT CHANGING ANYTHING, sometimes it will sometimes it won't.

Anyhoo, I give up!  I've decided to invest in a silent PSU so I can just leave the bloody thing on all the time.

I do have one question though.

I've bought another MCE PC this time a ready built one from HP.  Its the 1290uk4 model.  This machine goes in and out of S3 perfectly but it won't wake up to record TV.  Any ideas where the problem is?  I'm sacred to try messing around with the BIOS, hacks etc in case S3 stops working all together.

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

I can get the computer to go into S3 without the remote, and wake it up again. After installing the remote it wakes up right away. As it was mentioned before, something is waking up the computer. In my case it is not the mouse or keyboard, but the  IR reciever itsself.
Im using a Asus A7N8X Deluxe mb. I  have set the jumpers correct to enable power on USB.
If I unplug the IR reciever from the USB it goes into S3 like normal and I can wake it up with the keyboard.

    Help needed please

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

Then you need to change the option at the Power Management tab of your eHome Properties window. Open Device Manager and under Keyboards look for eHome. Right-click it and click Properties. Uncheck the 'Allow this device to bring....' option.

RE: S3 Standby - Hardware & Software solution

So frustrated.  I've tried everything.......registry hack, changing from s1/s3 to just s3, you name it.  My HTPC will go into s3 just fine.  The remote will then wake it up.  However, instead of just bringing back my MCE screen, it reboots the computer.  EVERY TIME!!!!  How do I get the computer to just wake back up instead of rebooting?  Thanks.
