Use the "LightsOut" add-in from the WHS site and you will be able to put the server to sleep or hibernate when you need to. It also provides instructions how to disable the process that keeps wakes up the server every 20 - 30 minutes. I have this setup on Vista 64 PP1...another "it just works"! Hope this helps.

it does take some tinkering to disable the waking up but its easy with the step by step instructions. this is a german page but theres english near the bottom with english documentation too. mine was waking up every 30mins but with the fix works like a charm.

As you can see by the blue line, my server turns off at around midnight and wakes up at around 8am every day. moved the schedule back an hour or so for weekends as I go to bed later and wake up later! Who doesn't!

My server has 13 HDD's, running an Athlon64 3200, and the first quater i had it running, my electricity bill shot up by $300 !!!   The WAF went straight down.

My recommendation is to save your $300 by trashing those 13 drives and buying 3 or 4 much much larger ones.  I'm guessing you're using an external casing as well?  More power used.

I no it sounds odd...but to in order for standby to work, you need to have video card drivrs, otherwise the standby/hibernate function does not work...personally i dont see the point in standby in servers...prehaps invest in a power saving cpu and an energy efficiant psu?

best thing is to install lightsout which allows you to create a schedule for your server over a month.  This does require a certain service to be disbled to force the server to stay shut off
