    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

That's great news - Samsung wouldn't tell me anything so I was about to cave and buy one of the Linksys or D-Link units but I'll wait until August.  It sounds like it will only work with the 26" TVs and higher though which have HDMI-CEC which is a shame - I need a smaller one for a bedroom...

I know people have seen this in action. What are the transitions like?

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

So the official press release said the Samsung MediaLive extender would be available August 2008.  We're two-thirds into August, and I still can't find any word of it beyond the standard press releases back in July.  Does anyone know if the release has been postponed, or did they just mean one of the last days in August?

On August 7 I e-mailed the account executive who issued the press release, asking the same questions.  He replied the next day, as follows:

Currently, the Samsung MediaLive is scheduled to appear at retailers near the end of August.  This is, as always, subject to change, but definitely start searching at say Amazon and Best Buy in the next 2-3 weeks!

Could you email the account executive again and see where the extenders are?  I haven't been able to find them in any store...

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

While I haven't found any place that is selling these yet (or even taking orders), I did find the following additional mention of them (beyond the press release saying they would be available in August 2008) on the Samsung site:

    http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/accessory/type/accList.do?group=televisions&type=televisions&subtype=tvaccessories&subsubtype=misc

I'm particularly interested these because of the HDMI-CEC integration and that apparently they can mount onto the back of select models, as I'm about the buy some 32" 1080p LCDs for bedrooms and would love to not have to worry about IR line-of-site to DMA2100 extenders, particularly if the 32" models are among those that it can mount onto the back of (I'll mount it myself, somehow, if not)...

That info sounds good to me since the original word was that is was only for 2008 sets.
    I have the 2007 LNT4661 Smile [:)]

However, this set is in my main viewing room where I prefer having the DMA2200 for the additional DVD drive for the occasional need for it.

But if this set gets moved to the bedroom to replace my old fashioned CRT, it'll be perfect.

    Vista Ultimate with TV Pack
    Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.2GHz (OC'd to 2.9) / 4 Gigs Ram
    c: 80 Gig d: 500 Gig SATA
    Tuners: PVR-500 / HDHomeRun x 2 / WinTV 1600
    Extenders: DMA-2200 / DMA-2100 x 2

Linksys V1 extender (for sale..anyone interested?)

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

OK, here's the User Manual, now if I could only find some place that is selling them!

    Some of the highlights:

Looks like it will turn itself off to save power (which will presumably also stop streaming, so presumably you don't need to worry about the exiting-out of the streaming when you turn the TV off):
    • If you switch to an input mode other than Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC), the Extender will be turned off after 5 minutes. Press the TOOLS button on the TV’s remote control to start the Anynet+ device.
    • If you turn off the TV, the Extender will be turned off.

We all know that DVD streaming isn't provided (though presumably this will work with the work-arounds much like the current extenders do), but I've never tried to stream a CD (that is presumably in the CD-ROM drive)??:
    • Streaming CD/DVD from your PC to a Media Center Extender is not provided.

It would appear that you can't use their mounting bracket as designed and still mount your TV on the wall because the bracket uses one of your VESA holes (unless you can do it with on top of your particular wall mount bracket, can't quite determine from the description/pictures):
1 Separate the supporting ring from the lower right part of the provided bracket rack.
2 Insert the supporting ring into one of the VESA mounting holes on the rear of your Samsung TV.
3 Place the bracket rack upright then align its mounting hole with the VESA mounting hole on the rear of the TV.
4 Insert one of the screws provided (use one that fits into the hole) through the bracket hole and into the TV hole then tighten it with a screwdriver.

Just bumping as it doesn't appear as though the thread listing on Extenders is reflecting my last post; but, instead still lists surge's post...

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

I am curious how this "CPU 300MHz Multimedia CPU, OS Linux 2.6" compares to the other extenders? Although I have to say, I bought a linksys dma2100 and the transitions really are not bad at all.

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

Other (Linksys, D-Link) Extenders have a 200MHz ARM processor.

At least some Samsung LCDs now have the extender function built right in.

    Re: Details about Samsung's Extender

I've not seen any indication that Samsung has any LCDs with Media Center Extender functionality built-in...  They do have models that have network adapters and DLNA capabilities, but not Media Center Extender built-in.  HP does have some displays with Media Center Extender functionality built-in...  I could be wrong or have missed it though...
