Would it matter to anyone if I only supported VMC? Im looking at using Windows Media Center Presentation Layer for the interface.

I'd vote yes for Vista only.

    Boooo, complete let down.

The First Version will support MCE 2005

This is definitely a complete let-down.  I was extremely excited until I saw this.

I do not understand why supporting both MCE2005 and VMC on the first version is a let down.

because of this....  Windows Media Center Presentation Layer

you cant do the presentation layer on 2005 and it flat out doesnt work as well.... just look at mymovies for a addon that does it the "old way" still.  people are assuming the initial version will have to use the gimped way on vista when it would use the presentation layer and function better for us vista folks.

that said i would love to try something like this out.  it would be sweet to get this on the 360 extender.

Seriously, you're complaint is based on eye-candy.  All that matters is that it works.  Yeah, I have VMC and selfishly would prefer it Vista only.  But truly I really don't care.  Accessing "Watch Now" titles without a keyboard and mouse is all I care about right now.

IMO, if you are going to do it, do it right. Seamless integration is important to the end-user's experience. WMC Presentation Layer provides such seamles integration.

As to eye-candy, don't underestimate how important it is. Our lives revolve around decisions we make based on eye-candy: from our clothes, to our cars, to our houses, to our furniture, to our girlfriends/boyfriends....

Re: Netflix WatchNow MCE plug-in Development

I have tested early prototype WPF code and it runs on MCE2005 , VMC and MCE2005 Extender.. I not sure about Vista Extenders though I don't have one. I am sure it will run though.

For those of you worried about me supporting MCE2005 I am not using the HTML interface so it won't be so blah. I'm trying to match the Vista theme as close as I can.

True dat.   Although my car was purchased for engine candy Wink [;)].

I am so ready to try this thing out!

    Test - AMD x2 4600+ / ASUS M2N SLI Deluxe / 4 GB / ATI TV Wonder HD 650 tuner / GeForce 8600GT / Vista Prem 64Bit

    Prod - Dell XPS420 / Q6600 / 3 GB / 500GB Raid 1 / ATI HD 2600XT / Dual ATI DCT's / Vista Prem 32Bit

Re: Netflix WatchNow MCE plug-in Development

As long as it is 100% compatible with the x64 versions then I vote for Vista only. My main system runs with 8GB of DDR2-800 and my other 2 VMC systems run with 4GB of DDR-400 and 4GB of DDR2-667 so I require a 64-bit OS on each system. I would also certainly be willing to donate to the cause via Paypal and would love the opportunity to Beta Test when available. Thanks.

This is probably the one feature I have been waiting for.  Good luck with it and if you need any testers let me know.

I would sign up for netflix if this works well on VMC x64 with a 360 extender.

Re: Netflix WatchNow MCE plug-in Development

I see both sides of the arguement here...  I think there are FAR more people using 2005 than there are using Vista Media Center, so a 2005 version would be useful to more users.  On the other hand, I only use VMC and have to agree completely that any plugin designed without the Windows Media Center Presentation Layer just looks outdated.

My vote is for getting a working version out first, then making version 1.1 (or version 2.0) a "pretty" version for us VMC users.

38 posts and other than the first one - this is most reasonable I've seen.

There's a lot of people out there who are like slinkies...pretty much useless...but they make you smile when you push them down the stairs.

Re: Netflix WatchNow MCE plug-in Development

gobanjoboy, just out of curiosity... how are you getting access to initiate the video stream?  I was looking through their api (on codeplex), and there's an interface for searching "watch now" available movies... but there's no interface for actually selecting and playing a movie.

the past few days I've been thinking about doing this on my own and was starting to think it wasn't possible, and then I came across this thread today.

I am using Windows Media Center 2005 Edition and I think it should support both versions.

Forgive my impatience, but I keep checking here twice a day :).  Are you still going through with development?

I'm sorry about wait. Yes I am still developing the plug-in. If all goes well this weekend I should be able to post a test version this Sunday for you guys to play around with. I am still working on the UI code so it will pretty much just being something that functions with no bells or whistles.

I like your logic, Scott.  I would like to add one additional thing:  After a "working" version is created, perhaps the "pretty" version could consolidate queue management as well.  I know this may be asking a lot, but that would be a plugin I would actually pay for.  Especially if the queue management could be done without using screen scraping, since netflix keep changing their dang website.
