Can someone recommend an extender for VMC?

    Hi All,

So now that I have QAM working in VMC i wanted to look into dumping my TIVO S2 and  putting an extender into the bedroom. for the new HD LCD

    Requirements:
    Quiet Operation
    Live SD and HD TV
    Recorded SD and HD TV
    MyNetflix Plugin
    HDMI to Sony LCD TV
    Stream VOB and MP4 Videos

This will be wired 100Mbit. Are there Extenders that allow local tuners to be installed for  live tv

    Any comments are much appreciated
    TIA

Re: Can someone recommend an extender for VMC?

With the XBox360 coming down in price I'm hoping that it will force the cost of (any) extender to a price point of $100/$125... While I understand that it's a business but it really doesnt take alot to connect to a VMC and pass data packets via DLNA or Media Sharing.. Additionally, from what I have read, the transition speed is preferred on the XB360 then the D-Link, Linksys and HP MediaSmart... I havent really heard to much about the Samung extender... Too try and control my cost, I brought 4 XBox360 off eBay used for about $200 (not including shipping) that I have been using but I'm disappointed in the option... While the transition speed is GREAT.. the noise, that BRICK of a power supply and that bone white finish is nothing pretty to look at, I'm hoping for a CD/DVD solution where I would put a CD/DVD in my "PS3" and connect to my VMC (keeping hope alive, SOFTLED rant)

My thing going forward would most likely be the device that has wireless-N/gigabit, 1080p output, HDMI/component and digital audio...  If that's not available, I will wait until they start producing the XBox360 with the 45mm processor, they say that should control some of the noise BUT THAT POWER BRICK sucks.

Forgot to mention... Keep you ear to the ground, you might be able to find a open box special, customer return or just on eBay an extender... Just keep in mine, IF YOU CAN GET A BRAND NEW LINKSYS FOR $150 WHATS THE ABILITY TO PLAY GAMES, XBOX LIVE, NETFLEX AND SMOOTHER TRANSISTIONS WORTH TO YOU?.. Forgot to mention that DARN BRICK (power supply)...

Re: Can someone recommend an extender for VMC?

I'll do my best to help...

Since you are not asking for a local DVD player, then the answer is the Linksys DMA-2100 (otherwise, the DMA-2200 which has a local DVD).  It definitely fits the following requirements:

       Quiet Operation
       Live SD and HD TV
       Recorded SD and HD TV
       HDMI to Sony LCD TV

Live TV is accessible but via the tuner cards in the MC PC.  No local tuners, but then again that is how it should be!

What I cannot answer are the following, but I am sure that you can serach these forums for the answer:

       MyNetflix Plugin
       Stream VOB and MP4 Videos

Oh, and on sale these are priced at less than $150.  They have been seen for as little as $99, but only for a few hours.

If the Linksys does not support VOB and MP4, then look into the HP product as that has a non-Media Center interface as well and may be able to do those things...although at a much higher price.

Re: Can someone recommend an extender for VMC?

I am using a Linksys DMA2200 wirelessly with varying results. It has a habit of losing connection a few times a week. It also doesn't like my microwave oven as the picture breaks up when it is on. It does stream HD and SD well when connected. As for the formats, those are dependent upon what VMC supports. The extender is merely a receiver, basically. If you can watch it in MC, you can see it on an extender. I have yet to get the Netflix plug-in to work properly on the extender. It allows me to see My Queue and select movies, but I've yet to get it to play an instant movie on the extender. More of ten than not, it crashes, but it does work fine on my actual VMC box.  Fortunately, wireless connection reliability to the extender has nothing to do with recording reliability. That is dependent on your Media Center and its cable connection.

    Thanks CycleWriter,

Can you explain what happens in this scenerio.

I am watching live tv on one HD tuner and recording on the other HD tuner localy on the VMC box

My wife goes to the extender and trys to tune in the same HD channel I am recording or viewing live.

Can you pause live tv in one place and resume from other

    Answers mixed in below:

My wife goes to the extender and trys to tune in the same HD channel I am recording or viewing live.

She will be able to watch either the show you are watching or the show being recorded.  And, I believe, sh will also have access to the buffer (giving her access to rewind).  If she attempts to change to a 3rd channel, she will be asked to pick a tuner that can be canceled and replaced with her new choice.

Nope.  But you can do that with Recorded TV.  So, record the show and then watch it while recording by choosing it in Recorded TV.  Press Stop at the place you want to stop.  Go to the other device and choose the program from Recorded TV.  Clcik the Resume button and you can continue to watch from there.
