How to get more specific information about "Video Error"?

I can't seem to play any video at all in the Media Center in Vista Ultimate on one of my machines. E.g., when trying to play a dvr-ms file such as the default installed movie snippets, I get the error message:

"VIDEO ERROR - Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart media center and/or restart the computer".

After much web searching, it seems this error is very generic, referring to anything from too little video memory, or too high a video resolution, to missing codecs, etc. etc.

Since I’m using a default install of Ultimate, codecs should not be a problem I assume… (The codec reporting tool that’s out on the ‘net reports reasonable-sounding codecs are selected anyway.)

Is it possible to drill into what this Video Error is more specifically having a problem with?

Eventvwr is not showing anything for example. I am not sure where else to look, can't find any appropriate log files, and I don’t want to keep trying random things without having a better understanding of the specific error.

BTW, WMV files and DVD play ok in WMP 11 – though I do have to reduce the display resolution for DVDs.

    Thanks for any assistance!

What's the protocol when one doesn't get a response please -- repost to another section in TGB or assume a null response = we can't answer or there is no answer? Thanks!

    Hi,

unfortunately, wait and see if someone from MS picks up your message, and offers help.

    Thanks

    Tony
