Totally new to WMC; Possibly an Unusual Issue

I just a laptop with WMC Vista, so I'm completely new to this kinda stuff. I decided it would be cool to hook my old super nintendo up to the laptop and record it, but when I hooked everything up ( I hooked the SNES directly up to the computer, by the by. I wasn't running it through the TV or the VCR or anything), I got a staticy screen. After a little while I discovered  that I had to actually configure WMC to a cable box, so I was thinking maybe it would simply be as simple as telling WMC to look for my SNES instead of a cable box, but I couldn't figure out how. I tried setting it up up automatically and manually.

So I guess my question comes down to: Is it possible for me to hook my SNES up to my laptop and play/record on it? If so, can someone help a beginner out? Feeling my way around isn't working for me. Thanks a lot!

You can hook it up, but IMHO it's not worth it.  There will be a delay that will make your games unplayable through the laptop.  Media Center is meant for TV, so it doesn't matter if there is a 1 second delay; however, for console video games you can not have this.

Re: Totally new to WMC; Possibly an Unusual Issue

I gotcha. That makes sense. So if I was going to use it to record, instead of playing directly on the laptop, the thing to do would be to hook the SNES up to the TV, play on the TV, and have TV hooked up to the computer so the delay wont matter. Is that plausible? If so, what kind of cables would I need to connect the laptop to the TV through the RCA jacks? If this isn't a good plan I'll just give up on this whole idea. :\ Anyway, thanks! Sorry for all the questions..

Right.  If your TV has video/monitor out then you could use that to go to your laptop - usally a composite cable (Yellow for video, red/white for sound).  If your TV doesn't, then you could look at getting splitters - then run one set of cables to the computer, the other to the TV.

True, but it does apply to either.

Sorry. I didn't quite know where to go with this question, but since this seemed more hardware-related related than anything (notwithstanding I wouldn't have though of posting on it on a Vista forum) I decided to try here.

Thanks for all the help, Ryan. I'm gonna try running a composite RCA cable from the TV to the laptop and we'll see what happens. :)

They're merging the forums soon, so I won't have to type that any longer :).
