    Recording in a different file format with MCE?

    I would like to record in mpeg4 because it would use less space. I think my dvd player can read mpeg4 DivX, so it would be cool if I could record in this format, and simply burn the files to DVD to watch it on my big screen TV.
     
    I have the ATI media center tools installed, but I get an error message when I try to convert the files.
    OS: Windows XP SP3
    CPU: Intel Dual core 2.8 ghz
    RAM: 2046 MB
    HDD: 160 GB NTFS
    Monitor: Dell 1707FP (17 inch, DVI/VGA)
    Video: VisionTek Radeon X1600 Pro, 256 MB HDMI, S-video
    Tuner: ATI 550

    In short, no.

    Media Centre records in MPEG2. The TV Pack (Fiji) may or may not add h.264 recording, but you'll probably have to wait until Win7 for that. Even then it'll only record in h.264 where the source is broadcast in that format. For very good reasons I don't see Media Centre ever doing on the fly transcoding to other formats.

    Your best bet is to use DVR-MS Toolbox or MCE Buddy to convert to divx after the recording has been done.

    Thanks, mark, I figured as much. Maybe i will eventually get a sound reciever that will play those files, or simply start hooking my pc back upt to my TV. Since I moved, my pc is in another room. I like recording my shows at high bit rates, but that takes up alot of hard drive space when I don't watch and delete the files.
