Guide no longer working - Two Pc's

    Good day.

I just purchased a new Vista Media Center PC. I went through the whole setup process and all seemed to be working OK.

Setting up the guide listing, I kept getting error 13's. I worked on this for hours to no avail.

I have an MCE 2005 rig in the basement. I checked it and the guide can no longer update it's listings. There were two days of current data left. A manual update yielded no errors but the task completed in just a few seconds and the listings were not updated.

The MCE rig has had no changes in regards to OS or software updates in the past few weeks so with both PC's not able to download current listing data, there must be something wrong with the service and not the PC's

Is there a website or something that can be visited to check the status of the service and / or servers?

Re: Guide no longer working - Two Pc's

    Hi barryware

This forum is for reporting data quality issues with the guide data.  Connection issue would go to the forum for networking or hardware configuration.

Error 13 is a general network failure error and can be caused by just about anything.  I have test downloaded the guide for your area and I was able to without any problems.  The service is up and the guide for your area is available.

    Thanks

    J

Re: Guide no longer working - Two Pc's

    Thanks for the reply.

Not to sound confrontational, but I did research the error 13. Yes indeed, it could be anything. That's why I checked my other MCE rig (I now have two). That rig also is not receiving any guide updates.

There is nothing wrong (that I am aware) with my network or internet access and there have been no changes made to the once working MCE 2005 rig. Because the MCE rig has two days worth of data left, I believe the trouble started 10 - 12 days ago.

After a bit more playing around with the vista rig which is new and I have no history with this machine,  I was able to get it to update but I had to use the digital line up. I got a message stating that I do not have any digital channels set up but I told it to proceed anyway. That worked but the channels are wrong as I have an analog service and even though it is the same cable company (Comcast), the line up are different between the analog service & the digital.

Even more interesting, I have 5 choices when initially setting up the guide. Analog or digital with two different providers (Comcast or WOW), and another Comcast analog servicing a different area.

None of the choices worked Except for the Comcast Digital.

Because my older MCE rig quit getting updates after working and I did get the new vista rig to update but with the wrong line up, I don't believe that the problem is on my end with my hardware, network, or settings.

That is why I was asking if there was a website or something to check the status of  the service & servers. You can waste hours chasing a ghost when the problem is not on your end and have no way of knowing what the status is of what you are trying to connect to.

How many hours (collectively) have you spent trying to fix your e-mail client only to realize that it was your e-mail providers service that was down and not something that went wrong with your rig. :)

Re: Guide no longer working - Two Pc's

I have also had major problems with guide data. Not on both computers, but on one. It is always the same thing. I can do a clean install and get guide data to work. After some period of time it will stop working and the guide data will run out. Trying to fix it never works, and the only solution that has ever worked was a clean install. I have 2 Vista ultimate 32-bit machines. I have wired internet and DSL. I believe it is a very reliable connection, and one machine never has any issues. I can't figure this bug out, but I thought I wouls ask here if there is a place I can get some MS support answers from people who may be able to figure this out? I have built both of these machines from scratch or heavily modfied a Dell in one case. I just thought I would ask and see where this goes. I just am finishing up my latest reinstall, so it is fresh on my mind. TIA

Just a thought, have you checked to make sure your date and time are correct? invalid date, or time (by even 20 min.) can cause problems getting the guide.

Re: Guide no longer working - Two Pc's

Yes indeed.. I did make sure the date & time was correct on both PC's.

Here is one for you... Magically, the guide updates started working on Both PC's. The MCE 2005 rig just updated on its own with me making no changes.

The new VMC rig, I did make a few changes to it so I can't say for sure what happened here.

What does this tell me?? There was nothing wrong with my rigs, network, or setup. It was the service that was going through some type of problem whether planned or not planned.

That was the reason for my original post. I asked if there was a way to check the operational status of the service or servers.

Instead I got a reply reprimanding me that I am posting in the wrong forum as I have connection issues. Connection was not the problem.

So back to my original question.. Is there a way to check the status of the service or servers?

Re: Guide no longer working - Two Pc's

    Same Problem!
    Same Question?

Is there a way to check the service?
If I try a different guide, it tells me that I can not use that one. It will only allow me to choose the correct guide.

It has been 3 weeks now. I cant not see the guide or record.

As a last resort I fomatted and reinstalled.

    Still "error 13"

My connection is over 12MBS, and everything in and out of VMC.
    (all on-line features work)

Is there a support number of siter for help?

I own 6 copies of Vista Ultimate.
MS tells me to calll my PC OEM

I own 4 Sony Digital Living Systems.
They tell me to call my cable provider.

I pay $150 a month for cable service.
They tell me to call MS.

    Cable, MC PC's, Vista......
    Almost worthless without gide data!

    Please help!

Re: Guide no longer working - Two Pc's

    OMG!!!!
I have been going crazy for weeks trying to fix this!
5 min after I posted this, I fixed it!

    Port 443 must be open!

I have no idea what that is, but it works now.

I am supprised that none of the tech sup's knew!
    (well not really)

I guess I needed to spend the time to put it in writting.
to realize that I replaced my router about 5 weeks ago.
The guide ran out 2 weeks later!

Like the Comcast turtle says "DUUUHH!"

    "SORRY, MY BAD!"

Re: Guide no longer working - Two Pc's

443 is used for secure connections. This is used to download the packages with your EPG information in it.

Glad you were able to get it sorted. Will move this to completed for others to read if they hit the same issue.

Re: Guide no longer working - Two Pc's

I still have problem and 443 is open.

I am running Vista MCE (SP1) and after over a year of the guide downloading fine, I started getting error code 13.  I tried everything I have seen here as well as other posts.  Disabled firewall and AV (OneCare), time synch, router config, everything.  No luck.

I also found the trace file and could paste the link into IE 7 and get the error, then paste same link into Firefox and download the ListingData.txt file with no problem.

Below is the trace file I got and noticed the error looking for the path:  'C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\eHome\Hms'. I noticed that I do not have an Hms folder, so I created it and now I do not get the error 13, but the download of the guide does not seem to complete.

I thought I was on to something, but now I am not sure.  Anyone have any more luck with this one?

    Thanks
