I would like to see a plugin that does divx/xvid conversion. mpeg-2 is a poorly compressed old format

Re: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

    Heimiko,

First of all - what a great tool you have made!

I've been looking for one just like it for some time now - no nonsense and does the job quickly.

Just a couple of points for you to catch some bugs (some already discussed on the forum!):

    When running in Vista Ultimate:

    • Registering the DLL's must be done from a Command Prompt with Administrator rights
    • The first run of the app must be done as an administrator as it writes to the Registry
      • As far as I'm aware, subsequent runs (as long as you dont change the settings and need to save to the registry) can be done with normal rights
    • Files are not converted correctly when there is a space in the source file name
      • This is only the file name, the input/output directories are fine with spaces
      • The output file is placed in the input directory and named simply "MPG" - no extension
        • All I do is convert 1 at a time then rename it to its final name

The only other two feature's I would really appreciate are a command line interface and a filter to auto-convert files which match a regex expression etc.

Hope this helps you fix the bugs - and anyone else who found them, but couldn't get round them.

Re: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

I am having problems trying to convert DVR-MS to WMV. I have been able to make the MPG conversion to work but I really need the WMV format since I want to be able to watch my DVR-MS files on my new Zune player. I downloaded grapheditor.exe and played with that a bit with no joy. I used an existing DVR-MS file and rendered it to an .xgr file format that I thought would work since all my all decoders were utilized. As a matter of fact none of the included .xgr files included with the application work for me.

Is there something I missed during setup or are the WMV and Alternet MPG options not working anymore?

    Thanks for any help.

Re: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

I simply use Sonic My Dvd burning software. Import dvr-ms file. When it converts (about 2 minutes for a 1 hour show) I double click on the icon (chapter). This opens up a great editor. You can add color bars, do fades, wipes whatever. After doing the cuts, I hit file, save as, and chose mpeg. Saves as mpeg that Windows Movie Maker just loves. Then can be saved with whatever compression I want. Hope this helpes someone as I see registry editing going on. It takes another step or two, but no chopping of picture or whatever. Later. Dave.

Re: RE: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

    Heimiko:

No other software is requiered. However, I know MCE has a specific DirectShow filter installed which handles DVR input streams. The filter's name is "Derypt/Tag", and its file is "encdec.dll" located in the Windows\System32 directory. When you start graphedit, and "Render Media File..." on your XP Pro machine, what filter comes directly after the source file?

This is important, since the <nternal graph filter> from AutoDVRconvert, uses this specific filter in its graph. If you find this second filter to be different on your XP system, it is still possible to make it work, only you have to create a filter set, which works on your system, with graphedit, and save it as XML file (XGR extention by graphedit) and put it in the directory where you stored the EXE file of AutoDVRconvert. After this, you should be able to select this XGR file in the drop-down-list "Filter Graph to use".

When making your own graph, make sure that you use the dump filter at the end instead of the video and audio render devices.

    A quick walkthough:

Start grapedit. Select "render media file...", select your original DVR file which to convert. Now, when you press the play button, you should get the TV show playing back, including audio. If thits doesn't work in the first place... bad luck. If it does, stop the graph (stop button). Then remove everything from your graph, except the DVR source filter, and the 2 filters directy connected to this one. throw away everything after that (including the DVD decoders). Now, add the following 2 filters: "Dump" and "CyberLink MPEG Muxer". Both can be found via: Graph->Insert Filter->DirectShow Filter. When inserted, connect all the pins together (drag & drop).

Following this post to the tee did it for me.

Re: RE: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

Another program, is VideoREDo, which has been around now for a few years, and works extremely well for Media Center files,  but now they have a brand new version called:

VideoRedo TVSuite - which is brand new, new graphic user interface, and is extremely easy to use.

    http://www.videoredo.com/en/ProductTVS.htm

Just drag your media center file into it, and it does the rest.  You can remove commercials, from a show for example, and then just export the video to a new file, and it exports it in just a few minutes.

If you are just snipping out a portion, sometimes it will do it in 20 seconds for example.

There is a free download available, but yes, it is not a free program, you have to pay for it after the 30 day trial, but it's another option available.

Don't get too used to it however, as you'll fall in love with it.  It also does other types of files too.

Just cut to the good parts with these great NEW features!

    • One button "Create DVD" workflow
With one button Create DVD workflow you get a process designed to quickly author and burn MPEG source video faster and easier than traditional video editing and authoring software.

    • New more intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI)
TVSuite allows a clean intuitive simplicity to user navigation while remaining highly functional and flexible. This new user interface delivers to the user the ultimate balance between an easy to use intuitive approach that supports its robust features and functionality.
    • Simple preset or custom DVD menu generation
TVSuite comes with a rich set of pre-designed menu templates to create great looking DVDs. You can customize or create your own templates in seconds using the built-in template editor, to give your DVDs your own unique look and feel. Reuse templates or share them with others via the internet, so that when making the DVDs of a series of program they all have a consistent look.

    • Even autocrops letterbox movies
Let TVSuite automatically convert letterboxed programs to anamorphic widescreen DVDs. You can even "tweak" the cropping parameters to remove additional unwanted materal and the edges of program such as station logos and Line 21 information.
Why do I need to autocrop?

    • Automatic down conversion from HD to SD
While VideoReDo TVSuite does a great job of editing high definition (HD) material, DVDs can only play standard definition programs (SD). When you author an HD video, TVSuite will automatically downconvert it to SD.

    • Opens .IFO files directly for reauthoring (unencrypted DVDs)
If you want to edit material that has been previously recorded on an unencrypted DVD, TVSuite can import the titles directly from the DVD or from a copy of the DVD on your hard drive. Original chapter settings are retained from the imported DVD and will be retained should you decide to author another DVD after editing.

You still get all the great features you love from VideoRedo Plus!

    • Automatic Repair Synchronization
is for those situations where the source material may have transmission errors (Over-Air Broadcasts) or not have the perfect timing required by MPEG digital compression ( Camcorder or VHS to DVD ).
Why does my video get out of sync?

    • Frame accurate (frame level) video editing
that precisely and reliably edits, cuts and joins at the specific frames you choose.
Why do I need frame accurate editing?

    • AdDetective™ Commercial Detection
takes the pain out of finding the best places to cut advertisements from your videos. AdDetective will scan your files for likely places where advertisements start and end.

    • Works with all TiVo Set Top Box DVRs
when using TiVoToGo™ on your PC.

    • Use your standalone DVD Recorder to capture video. All you need to do is drop your DVD onto your PC and edit.

    • Real-time preview of your edits
allow you to check your work, before saving, to make sure you have selected the optimal frames to cut.

    • Works with many formats
MPEG1, MPEG2, Transport Streams (.ts), Windows MCE DVRMS files, Siemens M740AV .CRID files, and Topfield .rec files. The result is that VideoReDo TVSuite works with the widest variety of TV PVR and DVR formats.

If you are using a PVR or DVR to record TV, VideoReDo TVSuite will simplify your editing, and reliably create DVDs of your TV shows in minutes rather than hours.

Re: NEW: Automated DVR-MS to MPG conversion utility!

Playing around with DVRMStoolbox and trying to figure out how this works...not very intuative i think...

I want this software to start/monitor the Recorded TV folder, and once a recordning is complete, analyze it, strip the commercials and (preferably) convert it to MPG.

Is this possible? If so, how?

I tried DVR Toolbox and found it way to complex for what I wanted.

I use a program called MCEBuddy ... it's super easy and automatic. Just point to input and output folders and away you go. It even lets you save a name ID and password in case you have a folder that is protected on a network that you want to use. Good Luck!!
