    Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

    Yes, it was directed at you Chinny.

    The problem I see is that the engine that builds these WTV files is still MPEG2. I guess that's what the card encodes it as and not what VMC encodes it as. Hopefully h.264 is available with other hardware as of now.

    Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

    I agree with you.  There should be no discussion whatsoever about sources - whether you are a tester or if you get it through some other means.

    imo the rules:

    1) Don't reveal beta status

    2) Don't talk about, or ask about, sources.

    All infractions (posts) should be moderated/deleted and the offender warned.  On second offense account suspension.

    I think I should have started a new thread anyhow with leaked details.  The whole purpose of my post was to let people who don't have beta see a little of what's coming.  IMO there were some long overdue changes that have been implemented.  I love betas - bugs and all - and I would hate for MS to start making it even HARDER (lol) to get beta status b/c of people who aren't very good at playing dumb (read: tact).

    That being said - I have never stated that I am/am not beta.  Officially, all of my information is heresay, third-party, or completely made up and should be taken that way.

    Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

    DavidinCT:

    I also do not want to see fellow members get in trouble or Microsoft not working with the green button for new betas or other Media Center information.

    I think what is very frustrating is that there is little to no communication from Microsoft.. so if they are working with TGB, we aren't seeing much evidence of it.

    Since Jess moved to a different group and left us, I don't think we've seen anyone else from Microsoft appear on this board (not counting the recent "Microsoft investigation thread")

    This is very much a user to user forum unlike other forums like Sage where the developers take an active role.

    Also, what happened to that beta eveyone signed up for last April?  is this supposed to be the same beta?  I think most applications remain in a wait state.  If this were the beta, wouldn't that be changed to closed or some other indication that people weren't selected?

    Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

    Enough with the warnings. I think the people who are posting here about the beta that they allegedly got their hands on know what they are doing by now.

    Now on with more screenshots of features that we can actually see a difference.
    :-)

    Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

    Not to beat on a dead horse (sorry animal lovers). Microsoft never gives out things that they do in beta, never leak anything. Just like when Vista was coming out, you didn't hear anything from Microsoft till it was in the Preview program or something was leaked on 3rd party sites, accept for some press statements (to build hype).

    It's just a Microsoft thing, they always do it like that. I agree that they should give some type of info on what they plan to do.

    Just like any software, If they tell you all the features that's comming, and you expect them. Then in beta testing or internal tests the feature has problems and can't get it to work correctly, they remove it. Then when it's released, people are really upset because XX feature is not there.

    Trust me, we all want to know what is going to pop out from the next update, some sites leak it, but, just remember, think before you post, in a fourm like this.

    No warnings here....again, back to the Media Center chat...

    And yes, I miss having Jessica here too....

    Here is the graphedit file from a sample captured using fiji.  No I am not a beta and no I don't have fiji, I just asked someone who has a copy.  I changed the sample name to make it "less incriminating" but otherwise this is a totally genuine H.264 captured HD file MPEG 4 from New Zealand

    Since its been over a year now since invitations where sent out, is there anyword on when we can expect a public release of the Beta or even a final release of the finished product?

    I'd have thought an additional round of invitiations for extra private beta-testers can be expected before a public beta.  But only MS knows for sure.

    Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

    has anyone heard anything about the Music section?
    Has the beta fixed the following problems that we have with the current VMC SP1 functionality:
    * album art being reduced to 200x200, so even if you have good artwork MediaPlayer will actually ruin it for you unless you are careful and only add music from a read-only share.
    * discover engine of new tracks is slow and actually does not work on large music collections. I'm running a 3rd party app to add music to my VMC.
    * Navigating: Album, Genre, Artist views. Are there better views for large collections?

    and is there any new things like:
    * Podcasting?
    * Internet radio stations?
    * DAB radio support?

    Sorry to get a little off topic here but christian_s what 3rd party app are you using to add music to VMC?
    When in doubt, reboot.

    Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

    I use UrlToCoverArt.dat, see http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/post/196728.aspx
    That has fixed my album art and for some strange reason also seem to improve the discovery of new albums.

    if that fails I have to open WMP11 > go to library > pretend to add a folder, then skip and back out. WMP will then for the next hour scan the defined directories for new content.

    I really hope the next VMC release will improve this. Just like VMC is a huge improvement over MCE2005 when it comes to performance on opening Music. In MCE 2005 it could easily take a 30 sec to get into music with VMC it's almost instant, as long as I keep the default view to Artists.

    Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

    Here's more news about the beta as reported by EngadgetHD...
    http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/07/05/no-directv-hd-for-vista-media-center-until-2010/

    "Even if DirecTV support isn't in Fiji, it isn't completely useless. There are many new features added in regards to HD -- like 16x9 thumbnails and HD recording preferences -- there is a new favorite channelsteletext for the rest of the world. The ability to control the tuners has also been improved, we hear you'll finally be able to assign an OTA channel to any channel number you want -- so channel 28 can finally be 28, instead of 1281. This is supposed to also help in resolving scheduling conflicts since you can have more than one source for each channel (aka OTA and cable). Another thing we're not sure if it's good or bad is DVR-MS is gone and is replaced with WTV, so hopefully 3rd parties like VideoReDo and DVRMSToolBox can adapt to the new format."
    listings feature in the guide and there's native QAM support. This is in addition to all the foreign tuner support and

    Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?

    For me, it will be completely useless. DTV support is the one thing I've been waiting forever for. If I actually have to wait till Windows 7 then I'm ditching Vista Media Center for SageTV.
