Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?
A few days ago a new version of the beta was released to the Beta-Testers.
MS announced it as follows:
Dear Tester, The Media Center team has released a beta refresh build to Microsoft Connect. The following builds are now available for download on http://connect.microsoft.com • Windows Media Center Build #20080514-2200 • Windows Media Center PlayReady - 1.0.0.1108 (x86 and amd64) Please do a clean install of Windows Vista SP1, before installing this new Windows Media Center build and Play Ready package. Step by step installation instructions are available on the Windows Media Center Beta site, located on Microsoft Connect. Since this is a critical time during our beta cycle, we ask that you submit your feedback via the newsgroups and feedback form, as well as revisit the previous weeks scenarios and surveys. As always, we thank you for your participation. If for any reason you are blocked from testing, please contact us immediately at mcebeta@microsoft.com. We look forward to your participation and feedback!
Unfortunately the files are not leaked at this time.

Hope your not a tester, as that is the quickest way to no longer be one....
I also might say, I might watch your posts about downloading / installing if you find it, isn't that just like pirating software ? And Microsoft does read here....

Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?
Don't you think he/she already knows all this?
<rant>
I really don't mean to sound rude but why is it that whenever someone feels the need to post something like this it is always followed up by one or more persons apparently feeling a parental tug? Do you know this person directly? Is the poster your child or otherwise asking for your opinion about his/her actions?
The reality is that this post doesn't really provide any interesting information, so a new beta was sent out.. who cares. If you don't think he/she should be posting this fact... then don't read it.

Your kidding right ? Sorry Mods, I had to respond to this one..
1. If you look over the user who posted that, He/she as 4 posts on this site, this is their 1st post to this about this subject. So, if they don't know, they should know.
2. If you are a *true* beta tester for Microsoft, you would know, that you should not post any info about the beta, the features, or even the fact that you are a tester.
3. On the second thing I said, posts like "98% and no seeders" or "I installed it last night and didn't notice anything new" tells me something. If they were a beta tester, they would know (I'm sure they have notes on new features) and the seeders thing tells me and anyone else reading that they are downloading a torrent, so, this is pirating software, as Microsoft does not release sofware via torrents, and they are posting it...get this...in a forum that Microsoft reads.
4. I'm kind of shocked that this subject after posts like that is not locked. If you can talk about downloading torrents, why not go into keygens, bios emulation and other hacks ?

And your post does what ? What info does it do besides flaming someone attempting to tell someone to be carefull ?
Also to note, I posted on the 3-4th post on this subject and also pulled it out every month while waiting for the beta. So, reading it, I have every right to, just like you do.
And yes, you came off very rude...

Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?
I am glad there is a thread where I can hear tidbits of info about what is on the not-to-distant horizon with Media Center [even if some of it is not entirely accurate or from a verified source]...
It gives me a little hope all of the time and money I have put into my systems has not hit a dead end and that more exciting features are to come.
I am a bit baffled why Microsoft is so concerned with secrecy when it comes to Media Center. I can not believe there is much competitive value in keeping this secrete, keeping the releases infrequent and keeping the beta test pool small.
I for one would not download a beta that was not provided from the manufacturer - under NDA. However, I could care less if someone else does. They are likely old enough to know the consequences of their actions.

I have not checked if it uses in band channel information to record programs... anyone?
What does this mean?
Thx
Rich
let's say you want to record a footbal match, and there is an overtime, so the match takes longer... MCE should be able to detect it from the information provided by the channel under DVB-T.
Sorry if my explanation is not understandable, my written english is very poor...

Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?
I am not sure I underxtand your comment about piracy. Maybe I am thinking completely wrong, but since this is an update to a piece of software that I have purchased a license for, I do not believe I am pirating any software. I also did not get it via a torrent.
Yes, I am using some beta software, but the way that I look at it, I am doing this at my own risk, and if I did run into any problems I would not be eligible for support from Microsoft.
Furthermore, I am not a beta tester, so I am not under any contracts or NDA with microsoft. I do not have any release notes, so I do not know any features that are set for this release. I am just noting things that I am seeing, and am simply interested to see if a feature that I am very interested in is available with this release.
I am not the one that posted the software to be downloaded. I just found it on the web doing a simple google search that was brought up by another user on this forum.

Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?
This is simple, from this forum no one will talk about where to get said software until it is officially released to the public by Microsoft. Those leaking details about the software have a good chance of getting caught by Microsoft (and thus banned from any other betas, possible legal action too), and if I think you are leaking details first hand your posts will be deleted and your account might too.
We do not talk about where to get unreleased software, and we do not leak from inside the beta. People might not realize it now, but the more stuff that gets leaked the more Microsoft will go to other channels for beta testing (eg. non-public/invite betas, private only).

More general, in-band EPG/channel information would mean that the EPG data is in the A/V stream of the TV signal instead of an Internet-based download.

Re: Do you want to beta test the next version of Media Center?
Can you ask your "friend" to run a program like "MediaInfo" on one of the recorded programs and give us a screenshot of the info it says there? Specifically codec info.

Wow, this reminds me of scare tactics used by regimes of terror.

If i am not mistaken this is a fan forum? and people need to be able to talk about what is going on, without random agents trying to use scare tactics evey time a new posing it made.

As I agree with you to a point, you must think about something. This is public fourm. Microsoft reads it, and you could could get in trouble for downloading/installing a unreleased Microsoft product. Not trying to give scare tactics, just give the facts.
As, I am sure it's ok to talk about, but, I think there is also pushing the line a little. The main thing that needed to be said, is saying your downloading or installing, or the name of the file so someone can seach for it, is pushing the line just a hair.
I'm wondering as much as the next person about what is going on but, the one thing people have to remember is " Think before you post".
I also do not want to see fellow members get in trouble or Microsoft not working with the green button for new betas or other Media Center information.
Now that that's over, back to Media Center chat.....

My contact wasn't able to open any wtv files with toub's tools - except for the one that reads/edits metadata.
Which tools were you using?
