RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

I still can't get my one box to see the RecordedTV on the other box, but that box can see the RecordedTV on the other box.  They are configured identically so I can't figure out what is preventing me from getting this to work.

I built a third box just for testing and I can see the RecordedTV on that new box, but the new box cannot see the RecordedTV on the other box.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Jup

RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

Can anyone shed any light on this problem with watched folders:

I have 2 MCEs setup to watch each other's recorded tv folders as per instructions above.  All works fine after initial setup, each machine can see each others recordings no problem.  However, when a new recording is made on mce 1, sometimes it shows up on mce 2 almost instantly, other times it won't show at all.  Only way to fix the problem seems to be to reboot the machine - in this example, mce 2.  Rebooting seems to force it to refresh the watched folders - is there is a time interval at which the watched folders list is refreshed?

Is there a way to force a refresh (without rebooting) or is there something else that I may be doing wrong / need to setup?

    Thanks,

    Paul.

RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

Yes, MCE doesn't automaticly refresh the new recorded tv. First I have to close mce and start mce again to list the new recorded tv. I would like to know if there is a way for auto refresh page or something like that.

I noticed that when the second pc is in standby position and pushing the recorded tv button on the first pc it takes a long time before the recorded tv shows up because it's searching for the network map on the second pc but isn't available. Is there a way to speed up that search for network maps so Recorded tv shows up as quick as without sharing recorded tv.

I also share dvd witch is on both pc's and this goes much faster when one pc is in standby so it must be possible I guess.

With the rollup 2 update there is a simple way of file sharing for dvd. After editing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Settings\DvdSettings from play to Gallery and insert a network folder with dvd's in my videos the dvd's on the second pc will automatic be displayed when pressing the dvd menu button on the remote in my dvd. That simple it should be for recorded tv.

RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

To help speed up finding the other Media Center PCs which are sharing content on your home network you could try a couple of things.

If they get their ip address via dhcp, some routers allow you to tie the ip address given to MAC address. As dhcp has lease times and routers get turned on and off, this can stop 4 or 5 devices changing ip address frequently.

Force the PC that is normally on all the time to be the browse master. Look up some MS articles on how to do this.

Does this post apply to MCE 2005 with Rollup 2 installed as well?

RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

to see the security tab and the "Proper" Sharing tab on the folder properties you must changes the File Explorer View Settings.

The XP (Pro and Home) default is something called Simple File something or other (no xp available as I write this).

With File Explorer open select Tools / Folder Options. Select the View tab and scroll down near the bottom and look for a checked box opposite a description mentioning Simple and uncheck the box. Then apply.

Close File Explorer and relaunch and check the properties of the folder and you should see the Full Sharing tab and the Security Tab will be available.
(if it does not show up try a reboot, its been a long time and i cannot remember).

RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

Thank you djrobox your post on Posted 11/2/2004 5:56 AM  did the trick for me.  I was trying everything but somehow adding that folder as you listed seemed to do the trick.  I will point out that this may be because I don't use the standard recorded TV folder on my main machine.  I use an E:\recorded tv on the main computer this is a 500gig raid 0 setup.  Once I added the shared name for this folder as you mentioned it worked.  Also I noticed that it only works if I use the actual computer name and share folder name for me \\mediapc\recorded tv in the watched folder section.

RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

I found the key in step 6 and it solved my problems imidiatly.

    1. Have both machines on the same network.  If the machines can't ping each other by name, this will not work.
    2. Share your recorded TV folder on each machine.  Give "Everyone" full control on the share and on the folder itself.  You can name the share the default, "Recorded TV" if you want, that's what I do.
    3. Open regedit, and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Service\Recording.  Find the entry "WatchedFolders" and open it up.
    4. On each machine, add a new line to this entry at the bottom, pointing to the other machine's Recorded TV share.  For example, see below the steps.  You have to do this on both machines.
    5. Click start, run, and open gpedit.msc.  Navigate under Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options, and find "Network access:  Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users".  Open that up, and change the setting to enabled.  Do this on both machines.
    6. Still within GPedit.msc Navigate under Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options and find"Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only" change to disabled.
    7. Reboot both PCs, and check your recorded TV.  Shows from both MCE's should show up on both MCE's!

RE: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

I'm also having a problem where the shared Recorded TV does not refresh automatically - I have to reboot the client PC for it to refresh the list of recorded shows from my 'server' MCE 2005 box.

Is there a fix for this yet?

    Thanks!

Re: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

Hi about the download for "Share Recorded TV" ?

I've been trying to get my NAS hooked into media center for DVR-MS files. Do you have a direct link?

The downloads page is still with out it.

There hasn't been an update on how the downloads page revisions have been going. can someone post me a working copy ? All else fails when using CIFS. There is no allow 'everyone' on mounted shared folder so only the 'share recorded tv' program can help. All other notes seem to be about two windows machines. ReadyNAS X6 Raid 5 device.

I have a login.bat script that gets triggered by the 'all users' profile to map drives. Using plain network path does not help. It's seen as mounted but MCE ignores.

Re: FAQ: How to get WatchedFolders to work

     avdcorpny,

I was having the same problem too.  Until I found this:

    http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.mediacenter/browse_thread/thread/5a910883d79890af/9acd25adffbf7ee3?q=sharing+recorded+TV&rnum=1#9acd25adffbf7ee3

Follow these steps, where the MCE Server is the machine that contains the recorded tv
content (dvr-ms files) and the MCE Client is the MCE machine you
    want to view them on:

    1) Make sure you have an account on both machines with the same username and
    password.
The account should have administrative permissions.
    2) On the MCE Server setup a share that gives full permissions to the
    username above (or everyone).
This share should contain all of the dvr-ms files you want to share.
    3) On the MCE client add the UNC to the servers share to the watched folders
    registry key.
Either use TweakMCE or manually edit the following registry key:
         HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media
    Center\Service\Recording\WatchedFolders
    4) On the MCE Client right click on My Computer and choose Manage.
    5) Expand 'Service And Applications' then 'Services'.
    6) Scroll down to 'Media Center Scheduler Service', right click and choose
    Stop.
    7) Double click on 'Media Center Scheduler Service' and choose the LogOn
    tab.
    8) Click the 'This Account' radio button and enter the Username and password
    from above.
Then click OK to exit the dialog.
    9) Right click on 'Media Center Scheduler Service' and choose Start.
    10) Restart Media Center (there should be no need to reboot) "); //-->
