RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

I tried the ehshell hack and got to the recompile stage and I get this:

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    C:\Temp\MCE_Hack>C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\ilasm /resource:ehshell.res /exe ehshell.il

Microsoft (R) .NET Framework IL Assembler.  Version 1.1.4322.573
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation 1998-2002. All rights reserved.
Assembling 'ehshell.il' , no listing file, to EXE --> 'ehshell.EXE'
    Source file is ANSI

    ehshell.il(1) : error : Not a text file at token '' in:

    ***** FAILURE *****

    C:\Temp\MCE_Hack>

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

I followed the instructions twice, along with getting Turge's ehshell.res with the same result. I have a 32MB GeForce FX Go5200 on a Dell Latitude D800 XP MCE 2k5 (MSDN) clean install- so this hack seemed to be the solution.

    Any ideas coders?

RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

The error you saw is usually the result of a corrupted file (i.e. the format was changed by your editor so that ilasm cannot recognise it).

However, it turns out there is a simpler way to disable the memory limitations on MCE without rebuilding ehshell at all - MS provided a built-in hack for this!

Try downloading the attached .txt file, rename it to 'disabledxcheck.reg', and double-click it to merge it into your registry. Then just double-click the Media Center icon and see what happens...

Wonderful fix! I registered just to say that.

I've been looking for something like this for the longest. On my Toshiba w/ NV FX 5200 (32MB) it runs pretty good. All the animations seem to be intact. I had to upgrade to a newer set of drivers (originally 40 series drivers, updated to 55 series).

Ok - the reg hacked worked best.

I did also try - ilasm eshell (no .res file) and that seemed to compile.

My advice - just use the reg hack - all that other crap seems a little over the top for something that simple...

Yup, the registry approach is much better than recompiling ehshell in general. I didn't notice that this was possible when I first worked out the recompiling method - as I had to recompile anyhow to get it to work on my Tablet PC (now an 'Ultimate PC Edition' as it is running both Tablet PC Edition 2005 and MCE 2005 capabilities on top!)

I *definitely* recommend using the registry approach unless you need to recompile ehshell for another reason.

RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

ok, this is my first post.

First i have to congratulate you for zhis hack.

But i can't use it (no transitions, no video...). I have a geforce4 go 420 32mb. i also use newest official drivers on the nvidia page. everything seems to work, but the video error still exist.

Someone here who had succes in getting this working on older cards?

Is it possible that this hack will also work for mce 2004?

i have an averatec 3200 laptop that i just wanted to stream my media center stuff to this laptop. i installed media center onto it with a remote so that i could control it away from the computer but i have video card problems too. tried using the reg hack but i get the same error. i can get into media center fine i just cant play any files. anyone know if i can get this working or recommend something that would work with the MS remote. the laptop has a Unicrome S3 IGP with 32megs shared. anyone recommend any other programs if no fix for mce.

RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

This seems all very long way about things. Mmmm? If I remember correctly isn't there a setting in MCE Customizer 2.3 to fix this?

It's in the 'Disable DirectX Check' It says 'Disable the DirectX Check to activate DirectShow & Direct3D effects on machines with less than 32mb graphics card. This will also disable 'Your Video card Drivers are not compatible with Media Center' Message.

Havn't tried this cos I did my resaerch before building my box.

Re: RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

For some reason the original attachment has gone missing. However, it's very easy to do this without needing any files:

    1) Start, Run, "regedit".

    2) Navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Display Settings" in the treeview

    3) Right-click in the right-hand pane, "New", "DWORD Value". Set the name to "DisableDxCheck" (without the quotes),  then double-click it and set the value to 1.

    4) Right-click in the right-hand pane, "New", "DWORD Value". Set the name to "DisableDx9CapsCheck" (without the quotes),  then double-click it and set the value to 1.

    5) Start Media Center, and it should start in full mode... but you may experience some strange effects and stability problems if your video card is not up to the job.

Re: RE: Video Card or Drivers Not Compatible... Help with Hack!

I tried out harakan's registry edit and it works great the only problem i have is that my integrated video card isnt quite up to par.

But it still works so why bother going through the ehshell.res recompile if you dont have to?

    -Thanks again
