Re: Hauppauge Releases QAM Plug-in for Vista Media Center

I am confused.  Assuming the Beta software works and I have two HVR-1800s both cabled to my FIOS HD cable box, can I expect to get clear QAM (mainly local channels) showing in Vista Media Center as I do now with my OTA tuner cards?

Not sture about the 1800, and im not sure what FIOS is, but you dont need a cable box for this.  Just the regular cable tv, pluged into the OTA port on the card, and assuming your cable company does have some clear QAM chanels, then yes, you can get them.

Thanks.  I'll give it a try.  FIOS is fiber optic cable service from Verizon.  It is great.  Not many clear QAM channels as most are encrypted but I am primnarily interesterd in the local channels.  I get them now OTA but would like a backup that plays through the Vista Media Center.

    Cool.

Im not sure, but I think I remember reading somewhere that the FCC has a regulation that says anything that can be picked up OTA, cannot be encrypted (like on cable).  I know here, I get all the local chanels clear, plus TNT, TBS, National Geographic, ESPN, ESPN2, Universal HD, and a bunch of the music chanels.

Re: Hauppauge Releases QAM Plug-in for Vista Media Center

Ok i got it working finally. Im running Vista Sp1 with Dual HVR-1600's and yes both work to record HD Qam and Analog! >=) It works with my media extenders too, but this is how i did it. I followed the steps and nothing happened, so i read about how it it gets its info from the OTA channels. So i manually added the channel numbers that my TV picks up via qam tunner, ie. 42.1 ABC local, 36.1 NBC, and so forth. After i added them, i went and mapped their infomation off my basic local analog channels. I then ran the QAM utility scan, and restarted pc. Voila! now it pics up the channels as if they were their ota counterparts. Only one channel didnt map, but i think its cuz it has mutiple streams, like 38.1 .2 .3 so not sure which one has the picture. Works perfectly so far, been recording lots of hd programing >=) The best part is that all my tvs can access it. Good luck to everyone!

Can you detail how you "manually added" the channel numbers to your guide? I have the same tuners you have and have not been able to get anything to work. After following the how to: more than a few times I am thinking it just wont work for me. However, after the QAM channel scan completes the plugin says it found 34 channels but after a reboot....nothing.

    Thanks!!

Re: Hauppauge Releases QAM Plug-in for Vista Media Center

One more clarification.  With the two HVR-1800s plugged into the cable from the wall (not the set top box) how do I get the HD broadcasts that are clear QAM?  From the set top box they show up as 801, 802, etc. for local broadcasts and are in HD.

    Am I missing something?

Re: Hauppauge Releases QAM Plug-in for Vista Media Center

okay well i have followed the how-to and installed the driver and QAM plugin, then setup the ASTC channels and then ran the plugin app, it found 44 channels but when i go to view them all i get is a black screen which then goes to the blue "cannot open media" screen.

i have a brand new HVR-1800 from newegg

it is interesting that it find and locks channels with 75% and above signal but then cannot view them....

i wonder what i am missing.

Re: Hauppauge Releases QAM Plug-in for Vista Media Center

I think i am going to RMA the card to Hauppauge and see if the one that comes back has Clear QAM, maybe the 1800 card i got was an old on that newegg had in stock, the advertising says it is clear QAM enabled on neweggs site...

i am impressed w/ the tuner quality for analog on a side note.... much better than the PVR-500, 150 or my ATI 550 pro....

BUT I WANT CLEAR QAM as OTA is a no go here, i get 2 channels :(

BTW: my 1800 Model Number is  78521 Rev. C1E9 and tuner chip is Tuner Model/Formats: Philips 18271_8295  //  (M/N) / ATSC

can some one who go their 1800 to work post their specs, can be found with WinTV Channel manager

    thnx

Mine is the same spec - Model 78521 Rev. C1E9.  Nothing on the Digital input side.  Analog input picks up the basic channels and they look fine.  Digital scan shows nothing!

Did you plug the cable tv cable into the digital antenna side of the tuner card...that was my first mistake. Then I was able to see some channels...still not working for me though.

Re: Hauppauge Releases QAM Plug-in for Vista Media Center

Yep.  If I plug it into the analog input on the tunre card, I get a bunch of basic channels.  When I plug it into the digital input on the tuner card...nada, nothing, zip, zilch!

Donno if this will help you; but, I have both QAM-supported models of the HVR-1600 & they are both working (in the same pc) using the plugin & the "beta" drivers on the hvr-1600 support beta tab (hvr1600_162_26028.zip).

    My process was the following:

    1)  Setup my "standard" channels for my stb (directv).

    2)  During that setup, tell it yes to scan for the digital antenna channels (it didn't find any).

    3)  Go to live tv & verify std def is working.

    4)  Plug in cable tv's coax cable into DIGITAL coax input (the black coax connector on the 1600's).

    5)  Install the QAM Plugin & REBOOT PC!!!

    6)  Go into the QAM Setup & Scan channels

    7)  REBOOT PC when complete

    8)  Go to the Digital TV Strength section of the Guide Setup.

    9)  Checked the newly added boxes--note, these channel numbers won't look like your "normal OTA" channels in the digital guide setup...  (ie,  my OTA CBS Channel "3.1" normally reads 1031.  The plugin has the number at 1741)

    10)  Go to the Add Listings to Channel section of the Guide Setup & remap the new numbers to real guide channels.

    11)  That's it.  I now have QAM in VMC.

Re: Hauppauge Releases QAM Plug-in for Vista Media Center

Although I had done all of this before, I followed these instructions to the letter.  It simply does not see any clear QAM channels in VMC or WinTV6.  It does see the analog channels coming thru the STB or directly from the wall but that is it.  Thanks for the help!

Oh and just FYI, at your Step (8), there is no Digital Strength section.  So, it simply sees nothing coming into the digital connector.  Might be a bad card.  I have a second one arriving in the next day or so and I wil try this procedure with that one once it arrives.
