I was pointed to this post because I have an open source project as well: Movie Browser 0.1

     http://treas0n.blogspot.com/

I'll collaborate on your project too... But using movie collectorz as the source for xml data to me is a bad idea. Movie Collectorz is not even freeware, maybe we should write our own data collection app.

I agree that it would be nice to use a seperate data collection app.  I believe it was initially used becase the author already had the movies.xml file and it simply worked.  My vote would be use utilities such as the dVD Library tool by Taranu, as well as the TV Collection manager.

Those are two existing tools that could be leveraged.

    Treason -

I love the look of it I will have to take a look at your layout... do you have to user the slider bar or can you use directional control on the remote?
    My VMC setup:

    System 1 -
Dell XPS410 (2.6Ghz C2D, 2GB Ram,Nvidia 8600GT, Blu-ray internal, HD-DVD external (X360 drive), (2) Vboxx DTA150s (OTA HD), Adaptec Dual Tuner (fed a steady diet of DirecTV... sadly NOT in HD)

Maybe Brian over at MyMovies will help to and let you use his collection data app???

Agreed. Great tool as is.  Why waste development time recreating something that is already available?

Is the XML file any different between DVD Library and Collectorz?

I'd have to check,  I don't think there is necessarily a huge difference, but something free is needed

I see the next big steps for this, aside from getting everyone in to the group as:

1.)  Come up with a free standard way of creating the xml file(s).

2.)  Include playback features for dvr-ms, wmv, avi, mpg, HD/DVD, BR.

Obviously the BR/HD-DVD portion would simply just mount the disc, and take advantage of the player the user is using.

I think it would be nice to further down the road also include a TV/Series section.

Of all of the new Movie Plugins that are coming out the only one besides the native DVD Library that plays from a Firewire Changer is MyMovies or the Exclusive Niveus Movie Gallery.  That in my purely selfish opinion would be a great feature.  Big Smile [:D]

Some of us have a mixture of ripped and changer dvd's would be nice to have access to all of your movies.

As for this plug in, very nice!  I will definitely check it out once it's out of beta!  One question - will you add the ability to import from DVD Profiler for those who use it?  That'd be a time-saver in itself.

I'm impressed with your talent, and wish you luck in the programming.

Re: Open Media Library - source posted

It's a program developed by invelos, where you can enter the UPC or title of your dvd to get the metadata.  I've found it to be very user friendly, and if I could simply use that to import metadata into the program, it has everything needed.  When viewing a movie, you see a large image of the cover on the right, the info in the top middle, cast below, and the left holds your collection.  The option to back-up one's collection means that generating an xml file for parsing wouldn't be a problem.

Ant Movie Catalog is very good too: http://www.antp.be/software/moviecatalog/screenshots

I actually liked it better than DVD Profiler, but your mileage can vary....

The source code is available from the site.

MyFilms for MediaPortal uses it, and it works very well.

Also, MetaBabel (http://ornskov.dk/wordpress/metababel/) is nice and simple (and gets hi-res art.)

Re: Open Media Library - source posted

I especially like MetaBabel myself (go figure out why);-)

The scraper for this project needs to be open source like the rest of the project. Further more I think it needs to be coded ground up as I have an idea of a client/server mode where you can maintain data from an external PC. But let's see.

Keep the inspiration coming and do invite any VMC developers to PM me.
