Great advise and I thought we had it! I uninstalled iTunes and Ipod for Windows, Still will not work. I will keep plugin away.

If you guys have FFDshow installed then open up Audio Decoder Configuration and make sure NOTHING is selected in the CODECS sections regarding WMA codecs.

Also have a look at your music files...who owns them?

Try and reset them to:

Administrators: Full
SYSTEM: Full   
Everyone: Modify (normally just Read/execute but try this)
Users: Modify
WMPnetworkSvc: Read

And reset them recursively (folders, subfolders)

I tried adjusting the security permissions, didn't help, thanks though.

But I did figure out what was causing my problems...turns out it was due to all the trouble that installing Nero 7 causes.  Unfortunately, it's not easy to recover...I googled and found a registry hack that restored some of the "no preview" issues I was seeing, but I found that some of the MCE issues weren't fixed even after uninstalling Nero...I had to do a "clean install" of Vista.  I've reinstalled everything I had before except for Nero, and I'm not getting any of the MCE errors.

Needless to say, I'm not a very happy Nero customer at this point...but I'm very glad MCE is now working as expected.

 

Well, _I_ still have the problem.  Vista Ultimate MCE worked fine for me for weeks, on an absolutely clean install. Then this just appeared.  Only thing I did (Only Thing I did!) was install SnapStream BeyondMedia (to see if its music player had better performance) and then de-install it. Can't say this is the cause, but it certainly is suspicious.

Time to involve Microsoft, but I am not quite sure how...

I have found anything that uses the shared media folders like ITunes will screw up MCE. Maybe SnapStream is using the shared media folders and interfering with MCE. Just a thought.

Could be. But I DID uninstall Snapstream before encountering this problem. My fear is that the Snapstream install changed something, or the Snapstream uninstall vacuumed out something  critical. Of course, it could have nothing to do with Snapstream... This is Windows, after all...

***SOLVED***

The problem has been solved. In my case, it was because one or more of the services critical for Media Center operation got "unregistered", probably during an uninstall of other software (most likely Snapstream).

The three critical services, jscript.dll, vbscript.dll and wmp.dll, can be re-registered as follows:


1. As Administrator, open up a command prompt window. For the uninitiated, click "Start", type cmd.exe in the "Start Search" box. When the cmd.exe file appears in the Programs list, RIGHT click it and select "Run as administrator".

2. In the command prompt window that appears, type the following three lines.

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 wmp.dll

3. Restart your computer.

This cured my startup problems with Windows Media Center in Vista.

However, Microsoft also recommends that you confirm the status and startup parameters of five (5) Services:

Portable Device Enumerator Service
Windows Audio
Windows Driver Foundation - User-mode Driver Framework
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
Windows Media Center Service Launcher

The first three should be set to Automatic startup, and should be running.

The Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service should be Automatic and Started if you enabled the network media sharing features in WMC, otherwise Manual start, and Stopped state are OK.

The Windows Media Center Service Launcher should be set to Automatic (Delayed). Since it applies ONLY to computers with a TV tuner, if you do not have such, the state of the service does not matter.

Again, for the uninitiated, to check and modify these services: Click "Start", type "services"  in "Start Search" and press enter.

Thank you, HighConcept! I my case it was MediaPortal what caused the error, also WMP didn't start at all.
I think regsvr32 wmp.dll was the cure.

Same problem, don't know how to fix it. Help!!! Tried suggested solutions.

 

I have iTunes installed, I have uninstalled it, still does not work

regsvr32 wmp.dll

and opened WMC, all my libary was there, then it crashed. I went back in and it was gone again

After doing wmp.dll it works then crashes after 15 secs and then the libary is gone.

Awesome post. Fixed the same problem for me.

I tried HighConcepts suggestion, but it didn't work.  I tried a few other things, again with no luck.  I tried to open Windows Media Player and got an error stating something like "The file wmploc.dll has a version number of 11.0.6000.6334 where 11.0.6000.6336 was expected."

Here is what I did to fix my problem.

(Using HighConcepts) instructions to launch a command window, do the following:

Type the following and hit Enter.
unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMP

I tried all of the service registering above. Windows Media Center Service Launcher seems to close itself immediately if I try and run it, but that's probably the expected behaviour as I have no TV tuner card on this machine.

I deleted my library, un-installing iTunes and every other media-associated program there was on my computer. I removed all of the codecs I had installed (a haphazard bunch) in exchange for a fresh install of the K-Lite Codec Pack 4.00, as a friend advised me they used that with the WMC and that worked fine.

I rebooted, opened WMC, and opening the library set-up still gave me the "A necessary component of Windows Media Center is currently not available" Message. Grr!

I opened Media Player, checked my library configuration, it all seemed in order.

I closed Media Player, opened Media Center, and got the "A necessary component of Windows Media Center is currently not available" message again. Grr!

Checked media player again, seemed fine, opened Media Center again without closing Media Player: It Worked!

Yep. Not sure why, but for me it seems that WMC needs something that WMP runs itself. Any ideas? I'd prefer to not thave the extra memory hog of WMP running in the background.
