MCEBuddy takes your LARGE Windows Media Center television recording files and makes them small saving you disk space.  It also removes commercials and converts your recordings into formats that are usable on other systems and handheld devices.  It does all of this automatically with a minimum of fuss and little or no technical knowledge required.

MCEBuddy is an automated service for Windows Media Center XP, Vista and now Vista 64 that converts the Media Center native video format (DVR-MS) to a user-configurable file format (WMV, DivX or H.264).

VideoRedo can edit out commercials also. I have found that the Auto edit feature is not so well. The Auto commercial edit sometimes cuts out part of the show because it uses the fade in fade out to locate commercials. Not all commercial breaks do the fade in fade out and they have no gap in between frames for the software to detect it. Sooooooooooo, stuck with manually editing out commercials still. Videoredo also converts to MPG, WMV, or back to the DVR-MS.

If you use a cable card tuner then MCE puts DRM on ALL your recordings. Therefore, NONE of these file processing addons will work.

I tried using the DVR-MS-Toolbox but could not get this to work. I downloaded MCEBuddy and its brilliant. As soon as it installed it started converting my TV progs. Stopped it and configured, left it converting over night. watching one TV prog and all the adverts were gone. Excellent piece of software

Great program. I am thrilled that it supports vista x64, as almost all other converters do not work on it. One thing though... This program is great, but I really wish I could select indivudial files instead of it going through my entire recorded tv directory. The reason I want this feature is because I got 3 terrabytes of recordings and not all of them I want transcoded. Also if someone wanted to convert say just 1 show to an ipod or something, it could not be done with this program. That was the one thing I liked about DVR 2 WMV, when I was running XP MCE 2005. Now that I've upgraded to vista ultimate 64 it wont work right. Anyway, this would be great if this feature were incorperated. Other than that this program is perfect!

I got the same warning from Avast! But there were 2 programs in the zip file - a "setup.exe" file and an .msi file. The setup.exe was the supposed virus, the .msi installed with out an alert... So far...

MCEBuddy may be infected with malware. Avast reported a trojan, and I double checked it on a couple of virus sites, and many of the virus checkers report it as containing a virus. This occurs in at least the past three versions. I submitted this to Avast for further investigation. http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/14fe87a7072dbcc18dbf2b4920cf4d35 Thanks, Jeff sion Last Update Result AhnLab-V3 2008.7.11.0 2008.07.10 - AntiVir 7.8.0.64 2008.07.11 - Authentium 5.1.0.4 2008.07.10 - Avast 4.8.1195.0 2008.07.11 Win32:Trojan-gen {Other} AVG 7.5.0.516 2008.07.10 - BitDefender 7.2 2008.07.11 - CAT-QuickHeal 9.50 2008.07.10 - ClamAV 0.93.1 2008.07.11 - DrWeb 4.44.0.09170 2008.07.10 - eSafe 7.0.17.0 2008.07.10 - eTrust-Vet 31.6.5946 2008.07.11 - Ewido 4.0 2008.07.10 - F-Prot 4.4.4.56 2008.07.10 - F-Secure 7.60.13501.0 2008.07.10 - Fortinet 3.14.0.0 2008.07.11 - GData 2.0.7306.1023 2008.07.11 Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Joiner.ev Ikarus T3.1.1.26.0 2008.07.11 - Kaspersky 7.0.0.125 2008.07.11 Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Joiner.ev McAfee 5336 2008.07.10 - Microsoft 1.3704 2008.07.11 - NOD32v2 3260 2008.07.10 - Norman 5.80.02 2008.07.10 - Panda 9.0.0.4 2008.07.10 - Prevx1 V2 2008.07.11 - Rising 20.52.40.00 2008.07.11 - Sophos 4.31.0 2008.07.11 - Sunbelt 3.1.1509.1 2008.07.04 - Symantec 10 2008.07.11 - TheHacker 6.2.96.376 2008.07.10 - TrendMicro 8.700.0.1004 2008.07.11 - VBA32 3.12.6.9 2008.07.11 - VirusBuster 4.5.11.0 2008.07.10 - Webwasher-Gateway 6.6.2 2008.07.11 - Service load: 0% File: MCEBuddy.1.0.8.zip Status: INFECTED/MALWARE MD5: 4ee2e889c886d069a23f72c8e0317be1 Packers detected: - Scanner results Scan taken on 20 Jul 2008 18:40:04 (GMT) A-Squared Found nothing AntiVir Found TR/Drop.Joiner.EV.1 ArcaVir Found nothing Avast Found Win32:Trojan-gen {Other} AVG Antivirus Found nothing BitDefender Found nothing ClamAV Found nothing CPsecure Found nothing Dr.Web Found nothing F-Prot Antivirus Found nothing F-Secure Anti-Virus Found Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Joiner.ev Fortinet Found W32/Joiner.EV!tr Ikarus Found Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Joiner.ev Kaspersky Anti-Virus Found Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Joiner.ev NOD32 Found nothing Norman Virus Control Found W32/Joiner.BQL Panda Antivirus Found nothing Sophos Antivirus Found nothing VirusBuster Found nothing VBA32 Found Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Joiner.ev Check out my blog, http://www.tipninja.com where I share tips on things like optimizing your PC use, household organization, and attaining health and happiness.

According to http://mcebuddy.com/files/folders/publicbuilds/entry1104.aspx, Kaspersky has acknowledged this as a false positive. A Wikipedia link is provided which explains more about the situation.
