Digital Cable Advisor now available

What is Digital Cable Advisor?

Microsoft announced at CEDIA that customers will now be able to add digital cable tuners with a CableCARD™ to any Windows® 7-based PC with Windows® Media Center. The Digital Cable Advisor tool is being provided by Microsoft to analyze consumer PCs to ensure that they are capable of a quality digital cable viewing experience.

The Digital Cable Advisor measures system parameters such as CPU speed, RAM, graphics card support for hardware acceleration, and digital connection capabilities. If the PC meets the minimum requirements, the tool enables digital cable functionality on the PC. Then, users can add a digital cable tuner with a CableCARD™. With a digital cable subscription from a TV service provider, users can access cable pay-TV, including premium content. This post describes the steps to assess and enable this experience on a Windows 7 PC.

Locating Digital Cable Advisor

Digital Cable Advisor is available as a downloadable application within Windows Media Center. You can easily locate the tool by opening Windows Media Center and navigating to the Extras Gallery within Extras (see Figure 1).

Extras

Note: If you do not see the Digital Cable Advisor in the Extras Library, then confirm that automatic downloads are enabled in your Media Center Settings (Settings | General | Automatic Download Options).  You can also choose the Download Now option from this location.

Installing Digital Cable Advisor

When you select Digital Cable Advisor, you will be greeted with an introduction page and the opportunity to install the tool (see Figure 3). Please ensure that you are not running on battery power when installing and running this tool. Some of the tests will not run on battery power alone.

An additional elevated-privilege prompt is displayed, then the download process begins.

Running Digital Cable Advisor

Please be sure that you are not running other applications when running the Digital Cable Advisor. Digital Cable Advisor will start automatically after it has been downloaded.

If any issues occurred during the download process or if the tool doesn’t automatically start, navigate to Extras | Extras Library in Windows Media Center to run the tool. If the tool was not successfully downloaded, try to download it again from Extras | Extras Gallery.

When you start the tool, the introduction page is displayed (see Figure 6).

After successfully completing the configuration process, you will still need to obtain a digital cable tuner, a CableCARD™ from your cable service provider, and a premium content subscription.

To uninstall Digital Cable Advisor

  1. Open the Control Panel.
  2. Under Programs, click Uninstall a program.
  3. Locate and right-click Digital Cable Advisor, then click Uninstall.

Troubleshooting

Problem: Tool hangs during assessment.

If you experience a hang while the test try the following:

  1. Check to ensure that you are plugged into a power source and not running on battery power only.
  2. Close the tool, re-launch Media Center and rerun the tool.
  3. If the problem persists close Media Center and attempt to run the Windows Experience Assessment.

a. Navigate to Control Panel | Performance Information and Tools (easily found via search for “Windows Experience Index”).

b. Select Windows Experience Index.

c. Select re-run assessment.

d. After completion, start Media Center and rerun the Digital Cable Advisor.

Nothing in the Extra Gallery, well, just the 5 usual items, no Advisor, this is as of 11/6/09 7:30pm EST.  I got the firmware update via Windows Update, but nothing new appeared in the Extra Gallery. :(

Did you try what was suggested to get it to show up?

"If you do not see the Digital Cable Advisor in the Extras Library, then confirm that automatic downloads are enabled in your Media Center Settings (Settings | General | Automatic Download Options).  You can also choose the Download Now option from this location."

The tool completed instantly saying "Congratulations! Your system is already configured to work with digital CableCARD tuners." The thing is, it's a system I built myself (ASUS P7P55D Pro motherboard), so my understanding is that this cannot be. It never went through the "Analyze System" pages depicted above. Is there any way to verify that it really worked? There absolutely needs to be a way, because as you know, cable companies roll a truck to deliver a CableCARD, and it would be damned annoying to pay them $50 only to find out the "Digital Cable Advisor" was mistaken.

To follow up on my previous comment... I just ran Doug Knox's OCUR BIOS Check Utility, and it reports, "The PC BIOS is OCUR compliant". Did the Digital Cable Advisor do this? If not, it's totally unexpected for my Asus P7P55D Pro motherboard. Regardless, I guess this means I'm good to go?

worked as advertised. The OCUR bios check utility still fails, even though I got all the to the 'congratulations

screen with the digital cable advisor. too bad the cable company isn't staffed to handle cable card activations on the weekend.

My graphics card or driver fails.  Says it does not support content protection.  Is this referring to HDCP?  If so, my card does support this.

Its not showing up for me also.  I tried "download now" but no luck.  I can't seem to find in on Microsofts website either.

JenkTJ27 - HDCP is a function of both the card AND the monitor.  Your NVidia driver utility should have a tab that will tell you if your setup is HDCP compliant.  I believe you will need to plug your system into a different monitor that is HDCP compliant as well to get the advisory to work.

I wonder of you unplug your non-HDCP monitor and then remote desktop into your Media Center computer.  Also, looks like it uses the Windows Experience Index as that shows it was updated after I ran the utility.

Recieved a HDPVR last Wednesday and registered dbvlink. *sigh*

Anyway, RMA'd the tuner with Newegg and ordered an external ATI tuner today.  I've been waiting for this day for a very long time... like everyone else.

The advisor completed with flying colors and my system is ready to go... come on UPS man!!!!!!

Um, does this mean I am SOL with my component output to my TV via my ATI 4670?  I seem to recall that HD is allowed via component from cable boxes.  After all, isn't this the "analog hole" people keep talking about?  I should just run the tool and see...

Well I ran it.  But what does Update System Settings do?  No errors, but I am afraid to press it, for fear that it will break something in my current ATSC setup.  Do I have anything to worry about?

Does anyone know what the minimum requirements are to be passed in each of the different catagories?  (ie. minimum CPU and amount of RAM)

Updating System settings will complete a reg key update that will allow the digital cable card usage.  It should not impact your ATSC setup.

The minimum system requirements are based upon the WEI score (Windows Experience Index).

The tool begins by validating WEI scores and then validates graphics capabilities in the areas of content protection and hardware acceleration.  The WEI scores required by the tool are as follows:

Area                      Required Score

Memory                              4.3

CPU                                       2.2

Graphics                              3.3
