How To: Share Recorded TV with other Media Centers

I see a lot of questions in the Media Center newsgroups and forums asking how to access recorded TV from another Media Center in the house.  This is fairly easy to accomplish.  In this entry I'll walk you through it in Vista; XP is almost the same except for some of the steps for sharing and securing the folder.

This setup is for Media Centers that are not part of a Windows domain.  Now that Vista allows Media Center machines to act as part of a domain it's a little simpler process.  I'll write another entry later on how to set that up.

The first step is to turn off the sharing wizard (simple file sharing in XP) do this on the Media Center that is doing the recording.

  • Open Control Panel
  • Open folder options
  • Click on the view tab
  • Scroll all the way to the bottom
  • Uncheck "Use Sharing Wizard"

Next is to share the Recorded TV folder on your Media Center that is doing the recording.

  • Navigate to your Recorded TV folder
  • Right click on it and choose properties
  • Click the sharing tab
  • Click on Advanced Sharing
  • Check "Share this folder"
  • Click the permissions button
  • Click add
  • Type anonymous in the box and click ok. If you want the remote computer to be able to delete TV shows click the change box, otherwise leave it at the default of Read (see figure below).

  • Click OK twice
  • Go to the security tab
  • Click the edit button
  • Click add
  • Type anonymous in the box and click OK. If you want the remote computer to be able to delete TV click the modify box, otherwise leave it at the default (see figure below).

  • Click OK then close

The next step is to edit the local computer policy to allow anonymous access to the share we just created.

  • Click Start and then type gpedit.msc in the search box and hit enter.
  • Expand Computer Configuration
  • Expand Windows Settings
  • Expand Security Settings
  • Expand Local Policies
  • Click on Security Options
  • Double click on "Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously"
  • Type Recorded TV
  • Click OK

  • Double click on "Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares" and ensure it is set to disabled.
  • Close the local computer policy
  • Reboot

Now to tell the other Media Centers to look at this share for Recorded TV you'll need to edit the registry.

  • Click Start and type regedit.exe into the search box and hit enter.
  • Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • Expand SOFTWARE
  • Expand Microsoft
  • Expand Windows
  • Expand Current Version
  • Expand Media Center
  • Expand Service
  • Click on Recording
  • Create a new Multi-String Value by right clicking in the right pane and going to New.
  • Name the new value "WatchedFolders" (without the quotes).
  • Double click on WatchedFolders and enter the path to the share on the remote Media Center machine, ex. \\computername\Recorded TV

  • Click Ok and close the registry editor.
  • Reboot
  • Open Media Center and go to Recorded TV, you should now see all the recorded TV on the remote Media Center.

Thanks for posting this, Mike.  Unfortunately though, I tried it and it didn't work.  Hope someone can point me in the right direction.  Here's my setup:

MCE 2005 HTPC with the folder shared and all instructions above follows (this box has dual analog tuners and is my PVR)

And the second machine, which is trying to access Recorded TV on the other box is also MCE 2005, no tuners installed.  I ran a utility I found here at TGB on sharing recorded TV and it made My TV visible on this machine, but still, even after following the instructions above and having it 'watch' the share, I can't see any of the shows.

Note, if I mount the drive directly from Windows Explorer, I can see the shows fine.  Strangely though, when I double click one, it loads up in MCE but freezes at the first frame.

Ideas anyone?

Thanks..

Great little hack Mike!

@wisdom...

Did you use a pipe '|' or a backslash '\' in the registry path bit...

The article says...

\\computername|Recorded TV

I think it should be...

\\computername\Recorded TV

I used a backslash and this works fine for me (albeit on 2x Vista PC's, but paths are paths...)

I hope that helps. Am I right Mike? If so, maybe edit the post?\

Cheers

Yeah....doesn't work for me either, and I've got two Vista machines. One of them has a tuner (the one I'm recording in), but the other one doesn't. So it wants me to "Setup TV" and of course I can't, because I don't have a tuner in it. The Recorded TV share is available from that other machine, but nothing shows up whatsoever in Recorded TV in Media Center.

This would be great except I'm stuck at the gpedit.msc because I have home premium and that snap in is not available to us. What can I do to get around this and set the security changes? Any thoughts?

I have 4 PC's.  Laptop running Vista Home Premium, HP Entertainment running Vista Home Premuim, a recently home build running Vista Ultimate and a server running Windows Home Server.  I'm able to have all my recorded TV from my Entertainment PC show up on any other PC but always under Video Library no matter how I configure the registries or local policies.  I hope there is a correction in Vista SP1.  I have one more configuration to try and I will see if it works.

My last configuration almost worked.  Now the media files show up under recorded TV but when I try to play them I receive a disk read error message.  I think I'm getting close.  It might be related to the fact that my Ultimate install was an update and not a clean install.  It's also having problems with updates.  Keeps trying to install the same update.

Hey.......I have had problems with this hack because I do not have Vista Untimate so cant use gpedit.msc to edit teh group policy stuff. It took me a couple of days to find a way to do it but I think i have done it (works on mine anyways). To edit the group policy stuff use regedit and go to MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters\NullSessionShares

If NullSessionShares is not there add it as I did as a multistring and then add Recorded TV in that list.

Also go to MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\RestrictAnonymous
and make sure that is disabled....seems to have worked for me.

I am so far not able to get this working correctly.  Here is the configurations and questions.
1. My Media Server is an XP machine with 2T of storage. (It does have MCE 2005 on it, but that's not the point right now. Let's assume all I am trying to do is record TV on this box.)
2. My VMC is an Ultimate Vista machine with nVIDIA Dual-TV recorders.

On the XP machine I made the changes to folders, permissions, etc., specified in these instructions.  My first confusion was at the step to change the registry.  My first reading of it was to make the changes on the Media Server, so I did. (There was already a WatchedFolders entry in the Registry, with the path pointing to the Recorded TV folder on that machine.)  On reading it again it appeared I was to make the Registry change on the VMC machine, since that is the guy doing the recording.  I made the Registry changes on this machine, specifying the Media Server name per the format, e.g., \\media\Recorded TV

Having done this I have the following result:
1. Recorded TV programs show up inside Media Center on the Media Server machine as double entries.  I am sure this is a result of screwing around with the registry.
2. Recorded TV pgrams show up inside the VMC is the same place as they were before I made changes to the Registry, e.g., I have the choices under Tasks --> Settings --> TV --> Recorder of drives E, F, G on that system, but not the shared drive on the Media Server.

Please point out the errors in my thinking.

I kept receiving disk errors on my computers looking for Recorded TV.  The way I fixed it was to go back and enable sharing wizard in the folder options on the Recording Media Center after the changes were made in this How-To-Guide.

Is someone going to propose a fix soon?  I have a VMC as my main recorder connected to an HDTV in the den and an MCE2005 as my desk computer, I'd like to share TV both ways through the MCE/VMC interface.  Right now I can only do it manually through WMP11.  I hate this solution because it requires the use of a mouse on my main TV when I want to just use the VMC interface.  I go through the "monitor folder" setup on VMC and it finds the folders so I select them but then I cannot find them on the Recorded TV menu.  It's even worse on the MCE2005 box because I cannot even figure out how to add the networked folders to the MCE interface.

I don't believe anyone has a hack for this on Vista to Vista machines.
1) The same registry keys don't even exist in native Vista install, so I doubt they are being read by Vista MCE
2) The Event logs from the Vista machine with recorded tv, shows anonymous being logged in and then immediately logged out (with no descriptive reason).
3) If applying full access to Anonymous, System, and Everyone accounts doesn't allow access, I'm not sure what else would allow it.

I would love for someone to prove otherwise.

I re-read through all the replies in this post and realized that Paulames had already proposed a solution for one of the problems I was having.  I tried his approach (since I have V.Hm.Prem not Ulimate) plus a more thurough following of the original solution and it worked!  That is, it worked on my Vista Media Center - from that box I can now completely access all the content on my XP-MCE2005 box.  But going in the other direction is problematic my XP box keep freezing when I go to "My TV" in the MCE interface.  I turned off file monitoring from the Vista box and it solves the problem.  That will have to do for now, but if anyone knows why my MCE box keeps freezing I'd love to know.

So I did this and it worked great. I then had to reformat my MCE box and have a nice clean installation of Vista Ultimate on my HTPC and have Vista Ultimate on my laptop. When I reset it up, my laptop sees the folder correctly, and it updates in the Media Center interface, but when I go to play it back, it comes back with error saying "Video Error  Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer." I have uninstalled my AV/AS software on my HTPC and restarted both and have received no love. It did work until I reformatted my computer. Any ideas?

I went through all of this too but found that using the Add Folder option under library settings works just as well for me (and it seemed to be alot less painful).  The recordings are then found in the Video Library under Pictures + Videos.

1. make sure you share the folders where you store your recordings (there are several threads on this)
2. open MC
3. goto Tasks
4. select settings
5. select Library Setup
6. select Add Folder to watch
7. select Add shared folders from another computer, it will then go through and seek all of the shared folders in your network (you will have to ensure you set up the correct sharing for the folders you store your recordings to).
8. simply select those folders you want to include
9. to watch the recordings from other sources goto Pictures + Videos move to video library and they should be there under the folder name you added in steps 6 & 7.

BTW - I have 2 Vista Ultimates I use along with an 2 xbox360s.

I got this working on my two VMC Ultimate PC's however I did have some issues with the permissions on the Recorded TV folder and in addition to adding the Anonymous Login as Mike describes, to get it to actually play the recorded TV files, I also had to add the user account that the secondary PC was logging in as to the Recorded TV folder permissions on the main VMC PC.
