Short Bits: Zune WTV Sync, WTV Documentation

Media Center users that own Zune’s can see several places where Microsoft forgot to think things through.  Those with the TV Pack installed have a few more, including the fact that Zune 2.0 software can’t do anything with WTV files.  That has now changed with Zune 3.0 software where WTV syncing officially work.

Speaking of WTV, Microsoft has finally published some documentation on the format.  The document covers handling WTV files with DirectShow (that includes transcoding). (Via The Green Button).

DRM issues aside, the problem with WTV is its bloated size.  In my experience, for any given recording a wtv file is over 40% larger than a dvr-ms file.  That means my hard drive holds just 60% of what it did before TVP 2008.

Hopefully someone who works on Movie Maker gets this documentation!!  I read on MS forums that the Media Center team is responsible for making .WTV a recognizable format.  The forum I read had some MS employees acting like they couldn't touch it with a ten foot poll and that we should keep our fingers crossed!  I was pretty shocked that this is that type of situation.  Am I wrong to think this shouldn't be a big deal and that a Movie Maker update could've been slipped in with all those updates a week ago or so?  Not to mention the need for .WTV support on non-TV Pack machines....Q
