Short Bits: CableCARD, Media Center Show

Ed Bott has a great post on why CableCARD will never be mainstream.   Not only is the process of getting a CableCARD and having it paired a problem, but the lack of troubleshooting information (or rather the need for troubleshooting at all) on the PC side of things means CableCARD is likely to never to mainstream.  Ed’s suggestion to fix this is transition Media Center to a standalone STB type system (which is everyones solution to everything).  I’m not sure that would fix the issues with CableCARD, but the transition away from the standard PC is a whole different topic.

On this week’s Media Center Show Ian Dixon has Microsoft’s Kevin Collins talking about all the news from CEDIA, and Intel's Greg Schlechter who serves as a director of the newly announced Media Center Integrators Alliance.

Hurricane on the way!

I been around and a member of this community for years... It really sounds like "WE" have been BETA testing Media Center and now they have it as a point where  they are ready to go commericial with the product.  The Media Center homebrew system as we know it is going to the OEMs.

I personally don't want to see my Media Center taken from me and turned into a stand alone STB.  Part of what I love about Media Center is building and tweaking my own system, not an off the shelf POS that any shlub could play with.  If that's what it takes to get CableCard, then I'm not interested.

If they want CableCard to go mainstream, how about allowing home brewers like almost everyone here to build a system and include it.  There would be two in my machine right now if this were the case.

I guess I don't understand the STB comment?  Basically, the way the box comes from Velocity Micro or any OEM that uses internal cards, it is a very big STB.   I didn't have any problems getting the cablecards paired any problems I have had where related to the PC side of things (DCT firmware, Video Drivers, LAN drivers, etc.).

It would be nice thought if Microsoft or ATI would release some documentation on what the DCT event messages meant and some in depth troubleshooting information.   But the general trend in IT is to keep the customer in the dark on how things work as much as you can.
