Is QuiiQ a My Movies Replacement?

QuiiQ Movies appears to be a new Vista Media Center plug-in for movie cataloging and management from within Media Center (Via Missing Remote).  Based on the User Manual it looks like this has it all, including support for Extenders and more.

I’m not around any Vista machines to give it a try, but QuiiQ might be one to watch.  It’s not a free application, far from it actually.  The Base package is € 67 ($105USD) and then the Network & Client package is an additional € 99 ($156USD).

The Base package allows for the database to be stored and accessed just on the single machine, while the Network package allows you to connect one or more clients (I assume this means PCs, but not sure if it means Extenders), and then the Client package is for access on other PCs (or Extenders?).

Much like My Movies, the application includes a 10-foot application (“Projector”), 10-foot media/DVD import (“Collector”), 2-foot collection manager (“Collection Manager”), and service control (“Control Center”).  It appears to be MCML, and apparently it can also use you’re my Movies database!

There is a 15 day free trial of the Base package and more information on QuiiQ homepage.  They also have a product called QuiiQ Home Automation that does X10, C-Bus and more.

Anyone care to give it a try and report back?

I WILL TRY THIS EVENING DEFINATELY A SLICKER LOOKING INTERFACE THAN MY MOVIES CURRENTLY HAS. THE PRICE SCARES ME A BIT ESPECIALLY IF I HAVE TO PAY PER EXTENDER.

Price is steep, especially when you compare it to My Movies (free) and the included DVD Library in Vista (free).  However, if this is MCML and is quick, I don't think $100 is too bad.  Having to pay per Extender would kill it for me, so lets hope that's just for other PC access.

I am emailed about license I really think you would just need the network version at most and maybe not even that since your extenders in essence connect locally.

To me it would be worth $100 as it looks more integrated into vista then my movies which still has that windows xp feel and look.
Granted you get the same thing with my dvd's included in vista but that doesn't work on extenders :)

From the looks of their website what they refer to as clients are in essence mini pc's running vista, so therefore I don't see how this could work on extenders but I hope I am wrong. The interface may come up on an extender but don't see how it could support the playback functionality when it is not provided by microsoft, maybe divx format since that is supported in the extenders.

CAUDIO,

Much like my movies supports the extenders you have to be in a compatable format like dvr-ms or mpeg with your movies.

Just got an email from them you only need the base package to work on extenders. They don't support dvr-ms or my movies import but will be releasing one tomorrow that does.  Sounds promising.

I just received an email back from them about extenders playing movies back.

Here was their response

"You can play all the movies from QuiiQ MOVIES database in the XBOX 360 extender or in others extenders in the supported format.
As you know (article bellow) full DVD format is not supported. The formats have to be changed at this moment.

Play DVD on the XBOX 360
KBA-1000-M4C9SV
Problem
The XBOX 360 doesn't play a DVD format stored on the QuiiQ MOVIES database.
Solution
At this moment this is a limitation of the XBOX 360. We are looking very carefully to this problem and when the solution appears we will be the first to implement it in a new release. However it is possible to archive and play videos in QuiiQ MOVIES converted to XBOX 360 supported formats, listed below.
All the new releases will be free to upgrade.
Additional Comments
Video formats supported by Media Center Extender (XBOX 360)

1) Microsoft Windows Media Video (WMV) 7, 8, & 9
Maximum resolution of 1920x1080 (1080p) at 30 frames per second; Windows Media Audio Standard or Windows Media Audio Pro audio; Bitrates up to 8 Mbps.

2) WMV Image 1 & 2
Maximum resolution of 800x600

3) MPEG-1
MPEG-1 layer I and II audio

4) MPEG-2, DVR-MS
Maximum resolution of 1920x1080 (1080i); MPEG-1 layer I and II or AC-3 audio; Bitrates up to 19.2 Mbps

There is no support for avi, Divx, Xvid, Quicktime and H264.

To watch these videos, you have to convert to a XBOX 360 supported format.

Other devices

XBOX 360 doesn’t support direct video streaming or DVD Disk Changer."

So it basically does the same thing as My Movies and still has the same problems with having to convert your DVD's to a different format to play back on extenders.

I expected it to have the same file format issues as My Movies, that issue has nothing to do with the plug-ins and all to do with Microsoft or Extender OEMs.  Sadly, no plug-in is going to change that.

This product looks REALLY nice, but I have two questions:

1. Doesn't My Movies have Transcode360 integrated so that you can stream divx ,mkv, etc to the 360?  I think this works for me most of the time...

2.  Isn't Brian (My Movies guy) working on a fully MCML-compliant version of the UI?  No telling how long it will be until this version is released, given the complexity of working with the language, but at least it's still free...

I think there's not enough differentiation for me to justify the cost yet.  I'm going to have to take a wait-and-see approach until this stuff is more fleshed out...

I just finished browsing the User Guide, and I was surprised to find that it has "Importing a Movie" found on page 64-67, but it's basically DVD/HDDVD/Blu Ray Ripping.  I'm still not convinced that's it's worth the $100+ over My Movies which does the same thing.  Basically you're paying $100+ for MCML.  Plus a downside for me is that I have a mixture of Ripped and Changer Movies.  There is no mention of DVD Changer Support in the Owner's Manual.  My Movies does support Changers.

Maybe we're just "spoiled" on free.

I also don't see any mention of a monitoring service like My Movies has.  I'm always ripping movies directly to the hard drive and it's SO nice to not have to manually add them to My Movies since it monitors specified folders for new movies and adds them automatically...  This would be a deal breaker for me - gotta have it...

I installed it and I am not that highly impressed didn't mess with it much. The interface is nice and very slick but load times are not optimal for the price not worth it I am sorry to say.

Hell no, not at that price!  It's ok, but, it's a little slow and quite frankly not worth half that.

I've given this a good try and all I can say is, anyone who pays top dollar for that add-in is either completely bonkers, or they've got too much money laying around.

Did a quick 'review' of it which can be seen at http://mytv.senseitweb.com/blogs/mytv/archive/2008/03/20/quiiq-movies.aspx
