Where Does the Media Center PC (or HTPC) Belong?

A common discussion with Media Center is where does the PC actually belong in the home?  It has been thought by some that people in general don’t want a PC in the Living Room, they would rather have a Set-top Box (STB).  Then, there are some people who think that a PC needs to be in the Living Room.  It is after called an “HTPC” for a reason.  This, of course ignores the fact that the majority of people don’t have a true “Home Theater” to speak of.

As I’ve said in the past a major advantage of Media Center PC’s + Media Center Extenders is that it can fit into just about everyone’s setup.  You can take your standard PC in your Home Office and connect Media Center Extenders in the rest of your home.  You can take the Media Center PC (HTPC) that is designed to hit in with the rest of your components and put it in your Living Room, and then you can connect Media Center Extenders in the other rooms of your home.  Or, you can put Media Center PC’s everywhere.  There are also several other configurations that can happen.

What does your setup look like?  Is it what you ideally want, or would you change it based around hardware that might not be released yet (ex. v2 Extenders).

Mine is in the closet in the main bedroom of the house (20" wall mounted LCD, wireless keyboard & mouse). Can't see or hear it.

The house has a built in Cat5e wired network, double points everywhere. All wired back to same closet, terminated in a mini LAN cabinet.

In the living room I've got an Xbox 360 (32" CRT Sony Flatscreen, 5.1 Sony reciever(optical connection))

I intend on installing an XB360 in two other bedrooms (for kids).

I'm very happy with settup as described above. I can play games & enjoy media in the living room, I can enjoy media in my bedroom and when I install the other two XB360s, my kids will be able to play games in their rooms and access restricted media (Cartoon movies, home movies, etc.).

So that's the whole house covered except for the kitchen/dining room. I don't need to be able to play games in this room but I would love to be able to access my media. So that's where the V2 extenders come into the mix. I'm keeping a close eye on what might become available this year, hopefully an integrated LCD/V2 extender screen.

The TV has my main MCE machine, the projector has the 360, every other room has its own MCE machine, most without tuners.

I wouldn't mind going the route of extenders everywhere and a nice rack mounted Media Center off in the closet with all my network gear and other servers, but until we can access changers across the network I'll stick with my Media Center in the living room and extenders (currently 360's) in the bed rooms.

MCE computer is in the playroom.  This is the one room where we also use the PC functionality for the kids to play games and surf the Web.  XBox 360 is in the great room and the home theater, extenders in the two bedrooms.

I would prefer to put the MCE computer in a rack in the wiring closet, but that is not possible until there is a SoftSled solution.
