  • A Discussion with Jessica Zahn, my faith is restored.

I had the very unique opportunity to have a discussion with Jessica Zahn today at CES, and I have to say that I was very pleased by what information she was able to share with me and I wanted to add that she is just as beautiful as she is helpful (for those that were curious as to what she looked like).

We covered a number of topics but the most important ones to me were the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender, DirecTV tuners, and DVD streaming.

    Xbox 360 Media Center Extender
Move on, there isn't much to see here, she was unable to comment much on this and I didn't really expect her to be able too, as I have said in the past I feel that Microsoft is locked into contracts with it's third part extender developers and is unable to produce an update just yet. But I do have a feeling that one will be coming with Fiji. (Speaking of Fiji... Jessica was unable to comment at all on that, but I now know with absolute certainty that it is coming this year.. and no Jessica didn't give that bit up, but someone else did.)

    DirecTV Tuners
Jessica wasn't able to say much here, but she was able to say that they are coming and from her experiences and this is pure speculation on her part, but with how co-operative DirecTV has been, and how they are a much easier company to get along with than say...Cable Cards..that they will be much more willing to work directly with the consumer in releasing the tuners to us and not through vendors forcing some arcane certification process.

    DVD Streaming
I hope you're sitting down for this one boys and girls. DVD streaming is coming. Jessica has seen it in action, Microsoft has come around to see that this is not a feature only for high end implementations and that plain folks like you and me don't like having to have multiple DVD libararies or walking all over our houses to watch movies. That we want to purchase a DVD changer, stick our library in it, and have the abilities to watch them from any extender. There was no timeline announced on this, but again I have a feeling that it will be included in the ever elusive Fiji update.

Jessica, I want to thank you for your time today, you have restored my faith in Media Center, and given me hope, especially after such a dissappointment I had during the keynote. Sure it was good to see Bill speak, and there were a few cool things shown. (Some really cool object recognition engines and of course Microsoft Surface is always fun to see). But overall having no serious Media Center announcements was very disappointing. But it turns out that I was allowing myself to worry a little prematurely. There will be a lot of exciting new additions to Media Center this year, and I for one am now willing to stick around just a bit longer.

  • Samsung Media Extender in the flesh

I got to take a look at the Samsung Media Center Extender and I must say it is quite stunning, but the best feature of all is that it is missing a feature! That's right, this device does NOT have wireless built in. The price is yet to be announced, but here is to hoping it is lower than the rest. It is very small and sleek and it only has HDMI and a network port on the back.

  • Live at Gates Keynote

    5:37pm
So we've finally been seated at the Gates Keynote, after waiting nearly 5 hours and having to deal with the scum that is the majority of the human race, actually not everyone is all bad just the hundred or so people that decided they were above the rest of us and couldn't wait in line and insisted on cutting in front of us. But anyway, we're seated along with roughly a thousand other people all waiting for the actual fun to start.

    6:40pm
Bill Gates is introduced and is going over how great the last "Digital Decade" was and how the next one will be even better. Since this is his last keynote they are showing a video montage about how he will be spending the rest of his life. Quite funny. :-)

    6:50pm
The focus for the next Digital Decade will be focused on Connected Experiences, having access to HD content everywhere. Every device being Surface touch aware.

    7:10pm
Here we go... President of the Entertainment Division has a few things to say... a few announcements:
Disney and ABC to bring shows directly to Xbox Live.
MGM is bringing it's library of films to Xbox Live as well.
Samsung and HP will be introducing new Media Center extenders. Meh, we already knew this.

I'm starting to get very disappointed. Let's hope there is more. Check back shortly.

*battery dying.. be back later. :-) *

  • Live from CES: Can you feel the energy flowing?

This message is coming to you all live from CES. Can you all feel the energy flowing? I sure can. Here I sit, camped outside the Gates Keynote Conference Hall, being eyed suspiciously by Gates Secret Service (we're technically not allowed to linger until 2PM, the actual Keynote starts at 6:30PM (Pacific Time). Here I sit pondering if all of my dreams will come true and some truly outstanding Media Center related technologies will be announced (or at least exit Vaporware status... *cough* DirecTV *cough* or if all of my dreams will be completely crushed and our community will yet again be ignored.

I have high hopes for this year’s CES. There has been a lot of buzz lately about IPTV. New methods for getting HD content. Exciting new display technologies and all sorts of other goodies have been hinted at over the past month or so. Only time will tell, but thankfully, we're only talking a few more hours before our answers start to trickle in.

Stay tuned, more is sure to follow.

  • Gates coverage at CES

Hello all, I wanted to introduce myself really quick. I'm Jerold Billings, a long time member of the Media Center community, and a big Windows Media Center fan (most of the time). I'm a huge technology addict and have been working in the Information Technology sector pretty much my entire life. I'm a software architect by day and a Media Center enthusiast by night. I manage a software development department for an I.T. services company and as such we need to keep up to date on all of the latest and greatest technologies so I'm being sent to CES (Yes, I know...poor me). So make sure you keep a close eye on this spot as I'll be at the floor providing live updates and pictures, if possible, during the Gates keynote as well as posting as much Media Center related information as well as any other cool technologies as I can absorb while at CES.

Feel free to let me know if there is anything specific you would like covered.
