A Discussion with Jessica Zahn, my faith is restored.

I had the very unique opportunity to have a discussion with Jessica Zahn today at CES, and I have to say that I was very pleased by what information she was able to share with me and I wanted to add that she is just as beautiful as she is helpful (for those that were curious as to what she looked like).

We covered a number of topics but the most important ones to me were the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender, DirecTV tuners, and DVD streaming.

Xbox 360 Media Center Extender
Move on, there isn't much to see here, she was unable to comment much on this and I didn't really expect her to be able too, as I have said in the past I feel that Microsoft is locked into contracts with it's third part extender developers and is unable to produce an update just yet. But I do have a feeling that one will be coming with Fiji. (Speaking of Fiji... Jessica was unable to comment at all on that, but I now know with absolute certainty that it is coming this year.. and no Jessica didn't give that bit up, but someone else did.)

DirecTV Tuners
Jessica wasn't able to say much here, but she was able to say that they are coming and from her experiences and this is pure speculation on her part, but with how co-operative DirecTV has been, and how they are a much easier company to get along with than say...Cable Cards..that they will be much more willing to work directly with the consumer in releasing the tuners to us and not through vendors forcing some arcane certification process.

DVD Streaming
I hope you're sitting down for this one boys and girls. DVD streaming is coming. Jessica has seen it in action, Microsoft has come around to see that this is not a feature only for high end implementations and that plain folks like you and me don't like having to have multiple DVD libararies or walking all over our houses to watch movies. That we want to purchase a DVD changer, stick our library in it, and have the abilities to watch them from any extender. There was no timeline announced on this, but again I have a feeling that it will be included in the ever elusive Fiji update.

Jessica, I want to thank you for your time today, you have restored my faith in Media Center, and given me hope, especially after such a dissappointment I had during the keynote. Sure it was good to see Bill speak, and there were a few cool things shown. (Some really cool object recognition engines and of course Microsoft Surface is always fun to see). But overall having no serious Media Center announcements was very disappointing. But it turns out that I was allowing myself to worry a little prematurely. There will be a lot of exciting new additions to Media Center this year, and I for one am now willing to stick around just a bit longer.

I wonder if Sky will be authorising the same tuner cards for use with Sky Digital here in the UK?  Wonder if Jess knows anything about this?

Could you pump Jess for info about clear QAM and recording to network shares? We already know the first one is semi-confirmed, but it'd be good if you could get a little confirmation on the latter.

DVD streamin would be great if it could be stream from a WHS or HDD in general.

Having Changers will only work (IMO) if the Changers can play at least 2 discs at once. Otherwise, my wife leaves Sex and The City paused and I have to figure out which TV/Extender it's on. Better still I have multiple changers (one Disc at a time), but can't get to the other Changer for my movies if it's in use.

I must not be very helpful, then, if I'm only as helpful as I am beautiful.

Did you really write that? REALLY?

I might have further response to this post later; I think a couple of things were inadvertently misconstrued, but I need to make sure I say the right things. Right now I have to go soak my aching feet. :-)

Okay, mostly I was joking about the helpful thing. :-) I actually don't take compliments well.

Anyway, I do have some clarifications.

On the DIRECTV thing: As I have said here before (in the longest thread ever - http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/222268.aspx), it's easier to work with DIRECTV because it's their own technology and not CableCARD - which many cable companies have implemented slightly differently and which causes some of the problems that have been reported here and to us. And what I hope is that as a company, they would respond well to their own customers who want to get their DIRECTV signal into their Media Center PC. I can't personally imagine how a company could say "no" to a customer who calls them up wanting a PC tuner and who will cancel their DIRECTV subscription if they don't get one. At the same time, I don't actually know what the distribution model will be - we have not announced any details about what our partnership with DIRECTV will look like, nor about the timeline.

On DVD streaming: I think what I said here was that there is a compelling "soccer mom" scenario. As a mother, I know first-hand how many DVDs get scratched, lost, or damaged by my children. I'd love to throw all my DVDs into a changer and remote them to wherever in my house.

However, we haven't announced this as a feature included in any future release. We play with all kinds of ideas - we're software developers, after all, we have to prototype things! - but whether and how they make it into our products is another story.

I don't want anyone to lose faith; honestly, I am very optimistic about where Media Center is going in the future, and I'm excited about the work I've been doing since we shipped Vista. I know when we do next release something, we will make tons of people happy...and some people will inevitably be disappointed still. My hope and expectation is that we continue to make progress towards your and my dreams of connected entertainment throughout our homes and devices.

Thank you for your response, I understand why you need to clarify things but you still restored my faith - just the mere fact that MS is considering DVD streaming and is prototyping it goes a long way with me. Like I've said in the past, even a simple response such as "We hear you, we're considering it, we've got early prototypes that are up for consideration" goes a long way with us and is so much better than hearing nothing at all.

All very nize. However, I feel like all news about new advanced features for Media Center is completely unimportant as long as the very basic lack of DVB subtitles has not been adressed. In my mind it is the single most important lack in Media Center in its current state!
